Major spoilers from wikia reading and the show: Even though the black haired girl even says to the other one that she loves her, she's in love with the teacher (ohhhh soooo original...), and in the end the brunette hooks up with the guy that likes her that she shot down very early on...so really just the normal setup...

I shamelessly watched this ****. Played trombone from 4th to 12th grade in marching, concert, and symphony orchestra and this show brought back all the feels. The relationships within the band, problems outside of band with home life and school, training and rehearsing for competitions, field shows, parades, all driven by friends and the love of music. Even the representation of how it feels to be on stage for concert season was accurate. All the bright lights blocking out the audience and glowing off the instruments. It was an awesome nostalgic ride and besides some filler it was actually well written with pretty damn good art. But I do admittedly feel 10x gayer now.

From my digging elsewhere, in the book, Kumiko is supposed to confess to that trombonist. The **** basically only existed for the show to tease everyone.

I am well aware of that, but being a **** fan you accept that the vast majority of **** is bait or purely subtext, the 'ship' is merely the pairing, nothing canon... The sense that, were they actually dating, there would be near enough no difference in their behaviour, nor would anyone question as it seemed like that anyway, or that someone who isn't a **** fan/anime fan would see their behaviour and question whether they were together or not.
So, with that in mind, that is how I and many others looked at Kumiko and Reina, there is nothing canon, however they way they act towards each other you can see them act in this way, plus outsiders would watch their interactions and question or at least suspect that there was something more there.
However, the story arc of the second season drastically pulled this apart, with a larger emphasis on Reina's teacher crush, the more suggestions from other characters about Kumiko and the trombone guy being together/looking like they'll eventually get together. In fact, I would rate Kumiko and Asuka having a stronger ship this season than with Reina.

People can delude themselves all they want, they can ignore certain aspects of the show if they wish, but that is just denial. Back in season 1, the teacher crush and the trombone guy were completely ignore-able as it was a very minor subplot, however, as it was brought forward to be an actual subplot, you can no longer ignore it, it is significant enough that a ship simply is no longer possible without aforementioned denial.

So I said as far as I can tell its sunk, but all evidence would suggest that the ship has sunk and **** fans should move on to a still sailing ship of Mizore and Nozomi which has no known risks to its status, or a more secure ship of Kumiko and Asuka as the trombone guy, at least as far as they show Kumiko's impression of him, she isn't interested, however should a third season or a movie come about, I imagine this would change, sinking the ship for good.
