Although he "sold his soul", he kept full control and was able to resist Babadi's magic. All he got was a free power up and an on-par Goku fight which he was wanted since the start of DBZ.

That fight was only on par because Goku refused to go in SSJ3

while i agree that he had control, i think it made him more irrational, and also, the only reason goku didn't go ss3 and kick the **** out of him was because he didn't want to give that much energy to buu
User avatar #9 to #8 - sao (03/24/2013) [-]
I'm pretty sure the main reason he didn't go SS3 was because he knew it would cut his time on earth. Hell, in the end he wanted buu to power up and for the rest of the Z-Fighter to take him on. I had this discussion a few years ago on a game forum after a DBZ re-watch and this is what my comments boiled down to;

"It's quite simple why Goku did not transform. For one, as he stated he didnt have a chance to fully understand/practice ssj3 in the other world so being on earth he knew that transforming it would cut a lot of his time on earth. With that being said, he did not transform against Vegeta because he didn't think it was necessary even though he knew Buu would be released far quicker. You may ask why, the answer is simple he wanted Buu to be released.

If you recalled, Goku stated later on in the saga that when he turned into a SSJ3 and fought fat buu the first time he could have killed buu right there and then but didnt. The reason for this was because he stated that he wanted the others to stop relying on him since he is dead after all and he wanted Gohan to be the next hero with Trunks/Goten. Goku knew sooner or later Buu would be released and he would eventually return to the other world so releasing Buu earlier with his fight with Vegeta was not a big deal."

true, but i think that he only wanted the boys to fight buu after he was released. if i recall right, on the same episode he tells vegeta about holding back during the fight with buu, he also tells him that he held back against vegeta, so buu wouldn't be released. also, goku most likely knew that when buu was released he would kill a lot of people, and goku just isn't selfish enough to let people die so he can have a challenge. also he isn't cocky enough to take the chance of beating buu before anyone is killed.

You do realize that Goku has let enemies power up countless times so that the fight would be more interesting. He let's Frieza power up against Kai's wishes so "he would be sure that Frieza was beaten at his best and would never come back to haunt them.". He also lets cell power up: "I've spent months preparing for the day I'd face you in your final form... I've come a long way Cell.". Goku is exactly that selfish, thick headed, and confident. The only enemy he ever fights without letting them power up first is Omega.
User avatar #12 to #11 - picklous (03/24/2013) [-]
are you sure you're not talking about vegeta? because vegeta did these things, goku actually got mad at vegeta for letting cell power up, also goku barely fought cell, he just let gohan handle it.
User avatar #13 to #12 - sao (03/24/2013) [-]
Ya, I'm sure. I'll find the Cell episode later, but for the mean time, here is Goku to Frieza.

"When you lose, I want you to know for certain that you gave it EVERYTHING you had... that even at it's FULLEST, your Power was NO MATCH for MINE!!" (Goku to Frieza as he lets him power up to his max, while Planet Namek is crumbling around them - Episode: A Final Attack."
User avatar #15 to #13 - picklous (03/24/2013) [-]
true, true, but at that point 1: frieza would have gone full power anyway, and 2: namek was alreay going to be destroyed at that point. and also, when a saiyan goes super saiyan, they become sort of drunk on power, especially the first time, they become more aggressive and think less.
User avatar #17 to #15 - sao (03/24/2013) [-]
Frieza wouldn't have gone full power if Goku had taken him out in form 1. At that point in time, the others were still in danger and Goku wasn't even SS yet. Another example is from the Cell Games when Goku gives an injured Cell a senzu bean so him and Gohan can have a semi-fair fight. He was even in his "right mind" when that happened. Goku cares more about the spirit of the fight than anything else. He takes fighting honor too far, often putting the Earth and his friends in danger.
User avatar #20 to #17 - picklous (03/24/2013) [-]
while i guess you're right about cell, i don't think goku ever met frieza while he was in his first form, and by the time goku did meet frieza he wouldn't of been able to beat him without going ss. that being said, he does go a bit overboard with the fair fight stuff, well he is a saiyan after all.
User avatar #21 to #20 - sao (03/24/2013) [-]
Goku met Frieza when he was still in his first form and although it was tough he was able to overpower him with Kaioken. Hell, thats the reason Frieza went to a higher form.
User avatar #22 to #21 - picklous (03/24/2013) [-]
oh yeah, now i remember he fought with him before fighting ginyu, but afterwards he was too injured to fight untill frieza was final form. remember he was in the healing pod
User avatar #23 to #22 - sao (03/24/2013) [-]
Okay. Just checked it up. Goku doesn't start seriously fighting Frieza until after he has made his final transformation, but that's when Frieza is only using a fraction of his power. Goku fights on par with Frieza at this level, even causing him some injuries, worrying Frieza enough that he ups his power level to 50% of maximum. I still attest that if Goku used Kaioken x10 or x20, which he uses on the powered up Frieza from the start, he could have caught him off guard and killed him. That would have both saved Kirllin and Piccolo, not to mention the others elsewhere on the planet
User avatar #24 to #23 - picklous (03/24/2013) [-]
actually, when frieza starts using 50% goku charges up a spirit bomb, which he thinks will work but doesn't, he tries to kill frieza with this, then frieza catches him off gaurd and offs krillin, then goes 100% after goku goes ss
User avatar #26 to #24 - sao (03/24/2013) [-]
But the point I'm trying to make is that they were on par pre-power up. If Goku had used the spirit bomb or kaioken ahead of time he could have taken out Frieza before he charged up.
User avatar #28 to #26 - picklous (03/24/2013) [-]
the reason he didn't use kaioken was so he could charge the spirit bomb, and i think that he knew that if he went kaio ken x 20, and frieza dodged his attacks or survived, then goku would be completely spent, then everyone would of died
User avatar #29 to #28 - sao (03/24/2013) [-]
Goku wasn't charging the spirit bomb from the beginning, and if Goku couldn't kill him with Kaiokenx20 (This is pre SS knowledge) they would have all died anyway. Going "all out" from the beginning would have had Goku at his most powerful state, vs Frieza in his weakest version of his final form. Instead, Goku did the usual "Let's both fight and powere up going back and forth until one of us can't anymore". That kind of attitude risks lives and shows that Goku is willing to risk winning in order to have a fair and equal fight.
User avatar #31 to #29 - picklous (03/24/2013) [-]
true, but who says if he goes full force then frieza won't do the same? and if frieza went full force against goku, even if he managed to reach kaiyoken 40, he would still be crushed. but i also agree that he takes too many risks, but remember, he is a saiyan, he is literally born to fight. he most likely wasn't even thinking about the risks of not fighting serious, just completely absorbed into the fight.
User avatar #35 to #31 - sao (03/24/2013) [-]
Whatever the case, that was an enjoyable conversation and I'm glad I found another DBZ fan. As reckless as Goku can be, I still love that guy with my whole heart. He really is an amazing person.........er saiyan.

You forget that Goku is still sayain so while he isn't as selfish and prideful as Vegeta, he does have sayain pride and fighting instincts which would tempt him to letting villains power up.
#106 to #8 - hellothisisdog (03/24/2013) [-]
I believe the most significant reason as to why he didn't go SS3 from the very beginning of the fight was he didn't want to hurt Vegeta's ego. Vegeta having just received a ******* of power, believed he was finally on-par with Goku. Always being one step behind Goku was shadowing him constantly. Goku, being the amazing person, humble role-model that he was and always will be, decided to let Vegeta have his moment of glory, his time to shine, going SS3 during that fight would have completely stepped on every ounce of belief that Vegeta had of being Goku's equal, if not stronger.

What? Vegeta? Well at least it's more exciting than getting Krillin.

Then he uses that power to protect everyone on earth including goku in what is one of the defining points of the series.

When my dad had a midlife crisis my brother and I both thought the family would get a Corvette out of it, but no. My dad is such an eccentric homosexual that we now have a green and white Thunderbird in the driveway. It looks okay in the picture but the car is ugly as **** in person.
