I always hear this argument in when I bring up MGS.
It's cutscenes are why it's story is so sometimes incoherently detailed and complex. Now I'm not saying things that are overtly complex are somehow better than the more simple things. But it's a marvel to think of how close it brings you to the story, the characters, what happens to them and so forth. To say it briefly, it really feels as if you're living Snake's life, however short. Yes, some bits are mundane and boring and overly drawn out because that's how life is. And while it touches on many a cliché, I don't think it takes away from the fact that you are.. experiencing this game.

I mean, I was crying bitch tears at that tanker scene in MGS4 between Liquid and Solid. The years of both playing the serious, waiting for releases and the continuity between those two seriously got the better of me. And you can practically feel the emotion course through them behind every punch they throw. The history they have together. The years of brotherly love/hate of working against each other finally mounting up to that moment.

And then you actually get to fight him yourself and you get to experience the homage to the entire ******* series in that goddamn fight. Jesus christ I well up just thinking about it

TL;DR
MGS is ingenious thanks mostly due to it's cutscenes for providing character and plot development, background and what have you. It's like if a book got made into a movie which then got made into a game. ******* MGS man. Hate it or love it, it's ******* art.

Whenever I hear people make the long cutscene argument against MGS, my response is:

Snake is such a ************* boss, and legendary hero, that his abilities, toughness, and skills can not be portrayed accurately by letting the player control him for too long. If they are going to try and show how awesome snake is, they have to do it themselves, as the average player is too inept to demonstrate the same type of skill.
User avatar #51 to #49 - doktorandus ONLINE (07/27/2013) [-]
No, no. They covered that too, even making you feel that ************** endurance and commitment.

The microwave scene in MGS4.
User avatar #53 to #51 - laelaps (07/28/2013) [-]
Oh man, I haven't thought about that scene since I went on my Big Boss emblem playthrough like 2 years ago. That is literally my most emotional moment in gaming ever. With the cutscenes of everything that is happening outside the ship showing you all that Snake is fighting for.... **** was so deep

I literally bought a PS3 just to play that game. I've grown up with that series and I felt it was an injustice to not finish it. And years after it's initial release, I bawled my eyes out with how much emotion and closure it brought.

Not many 'final' installations are as dedicated to wrapping things up, nor as finely crafted as that game was. That game can be heralded as one of, if not the perfect example of how to end a game series. Absolutely everything was perfect.

I watched through quite a lot of episodes but not all of them where. Few really good ones, several good ones and the rest had a few funny things here and there. Some where just bad.
