It's not based off Evangelion specifically. There's more than one mecha anime in the world.

the mechs are called evongellions :/, on top of that they sync with the mechs mid just like the show, dont know if you watched evongelion but the main mech in pacific rim (the one the main charecter pilots) is the same look that rays (think thats what her name is, the blue haired one been a while since i watched it, ) mech has, the begining starts the same too, we tried bombers and copters and after days it finally keeled so we decided that mechs was our best bet, its not a movie interprutation of the show but its definetly based on it

Are you high? The mechs are called Jaegers. And the mechs don't have minds, they're not organic-based like EVAs. And the only Jaeger that looks vaguely EVA-ish is Striker Eureka. De Toro specifically made it so it wouldn't be based off any one mecha anime.

But Del Toro was heavily influenced by mecha anime and the old monster shows of Japan. Heck he is trying to get a live action adaption of Monster going right now.
