if I remember, there actually were lions in Europe naturally, but much like wolves and bears in Britain and japan, they were killed a long time ago

I don't believe there were ever any modern lions in Britain but they were certainly in mainland Europe.

The lion was used as a symbol of bravery in heraldry all across Europe.
Most famously in England it was the symbol of Richard the first (the lionheart) although it may have been used by some English before this. After he used it, it became part of the heraldry of the monarchs of England, which led to it becoming a popular symbol to represent England.
All this is way way after the time king Arthur is said to have existed.
