Too all those who've already saw the souls post, this is just a repost for the new guys/gals.
Your soul is what basically powers the vessel of your body. It collects memories and experiences, or in meta terms, achievements and skill accelerations.
The soul mechanic is pretty much the only positive permadeath brings. As you have to die to truly progress. Once you hit a skill level, the experience is pretty much etched into the soul. When you die, you lose your skill level, but fret not, you'll get an EXP acceleration proportional to where you leave off. So, lets say you trained all your life in Blacksmith, the max skill level you can get within your lifespan, is Master. Through a few, you gain Grandmaster, through several, you'll be able to gain Legendary status
It’s believed that when someone dies their soul returns to a great library called the Akashic Records. The library is filled with books and scrolls containing all of the deeds of every life a soul has lived. It’s in these chambers that a soul can read over their past lives and learn from their mistakes in preparation for their next life.
It’s also said that every soul is born with a purpose. That they choose the precise time and place in which to be born so they can learn the lessons needed to attain enlightenment.

Souls in Elyria will experience reincarnation. The majority of players will be given a fresh soul. Although, there will also be players who have souls that have lived one, maybe even two lives. With random skill accelerations, making some players naturally a bit stronger. Now, I get that will alienate a few of you, but hear me out. In real life, not everyone is created equal, some people have a natural affinity for certain things. But, like in real life, there's no level of skill affinity that can't be attained with hard work.
Now that we got that out of the way, let's move into another probably alienating feature, talents.
In Elyria, a select few souls will start off with a hidden talent. I'm talking like, less than 1% of characters will have a talent. Talents are things such as Magic Use (this is one of the more common ones), the ability to Travel, Shapeshifting, Healing, Animal Speak, Planes Walking, and many other things.
Now, obviously, when you're handed a soul, it doesn't say whether or not you have a talent. This talent remains hidden until you hit a certain trigger. You might kill a specific creature, and find you can use its magic. You could get wounded and find you can heal yourself with a touch. You might drown to death... only to find you can breathe underwater.
Of course, with certain people doing their own certain things, means some souls will go on without this discovery for lifetimes, possibly even never being discovered.
Now, I completely understand that the fact that only a few players will get this, makes people apprehensive about investing, But remember, more heroes are forged from overcoming adversity, than being given an inherent advantage.
Here is what the soul selection screen will look like.
In Elyria, your Birth date determines more than your age. At the moment of your birth, there is a specific position in the stars. This is what the Soulborn engine uses to calculate a sort of "destiny" for you. Once you pop outta the meat cave, a set of plot hooks are generated for you. Once you hit a trigger of some kind (Talking to an NPC, eating a food, reaching an age, killing someone), it'll search a list of suitable hooks to catch you with. if everything lines up and all preconditions have been met a story will unfold. You could spend twenty Elyrian years searching for your destiny, only to retire to your farm and launch a story arc digging up some artifact while tilling your fields.
Next is Afinity. What affinity is, is basically your morality. Depending on your actions, it can shift towards light or dark. The soulborn engine uses this to generate suitable quests for you. Be careful though, once you push towards one side of the spectrum, it's hard to get back.
Not in the common "Lovey dovey perfect for eachother" sense... though you can do that, I ain't one to judge.
Each soul has an identical mate, that starts the same in every way. When soulmates are within a limited distance of each other, they sense the others presence. If they happen to meet, they will experience a slew of rewards.
One, as the souls get closer, they intertwine in experience, giving twins a shared skillset between the two. Also, as long as they are near, they have enough spiritual resolve, to always have a visible tether during soulwalking.
Although, there is a drawback. While they start as twins, who knows where their respective paths will lead them. Possibly having soulmates ending up in directly opposing affinities. Although, there's nothing stated at this time that would force soulmates to have to kill eachother.
