As a black person, I prefer just being called black, I am not from nor have I ever been to Africa. In fact I think American-African would be better.
User avatar #57 to #11 - happypancake (03/29/2014) [-]
So wait, do you prefer 'black person' or 'African-American'? I'm confused.

"As a black person, I prefer just being called black"

This is as simple as it gets.

"In fact I think African-American would be better".

Egad boy, read the rest of the comment, it's only 2 sentences.

He said "American-African" in the second part.

Then I should learn how to read, because clearly phonics didn't stick my first round of primary school.

I think the final chain of his preferences is black > american-african > african-american.
User avatar #80 to #78 - Anonymi (03/29/2014) [-]
He said he thinks "American-African" would be better, since he's never been to Africa.
User avatar #141 to #57 - jbywalec (03/29/2014) [-]
It is not as confusing as it sounds. He is saying he prefers to be called black.
But he is also saying: Black people are referred to as "AFRICAN-American."
He says he (and others) have not been or ever will be in Africa so AMERICAN-African would be better. America cause they were born there but the African being the second word meaning they derive from there.

The simple switch of the words change the perspective.

We call them black. They call us white. We call the Chinese/Japanese/Taiwanese all Asian. We call Indians well Indians. I'm sure they are a lot of politically correct terms, but it's sometimes more offensive to be politically correct then it is not.
User avatar #82 to #56 - JimmyRocketfingers (03/29/2014) [-]
Not that I'm disagreeing, but if you want some continuity then Asians would be referred to as Yellow. And that is considered racist.
User avatar #111 to #82 - badmonkey ONLINE (03/29/2014) [-]
That's racist and insensitive, I prefer "pink somewhere here and there mostly beige but may appear brown due to poor complexion"

In Austria we have words like "maximum pigmented" or "European citizen with African-American roots" so that we can avoid black. What a world to live in
#65 to #23 - anon (03/29/2014) [-]
Maximum pigmented? As far as I know, that term was only invented to make fun of political correctnes. Also, appereantly there are quite some black people around in germany that don't mind the term "Neger" as long as you don't sound like you want to insult them.
User avatar #120 - undeadmaus (03/29/2014) [-]
Racism in Europe is different. You have densely packed countries with a long hisotry of many wars and conflicts. That means that most racism is directed towards other european countries (translation for americans: other white people) usually neighboring countries.
User avatar #145 to #120 - catburglarpenis (03/29/2014) [-]
Translation for Americans: "other states".

Yeah we do that too. Isn't that right, Texans?
User avatar #146 to #145 - undeadmaus (03/29/2014) [-]
It's simillar but ot entirely. One thing to not like them cause you think they're stupid bible hugging rednecks and another because that country had invaded yours some years ago.
User avatar #150 to #146 - catburglarpenis (03/30/2014) [-]
It's very similar though. Half the states are still mad that the North won the Civil War so long ago. Hence flying the Confederate flag all the damn time.

Where I live in the Netherlands we just call em Negers ( ******* ) and nobody cares. A word is only as offensive as you want it to be.
User avatar #135 to #132 - undeadmaus (03/29/2014) [-]
That's cause you's all white. But I do get your point, simply saying a word does not make you racist, it's the intent behind it that matters.

However calling them ******* is kinda racist.
User avatar #138 to #135 - randomserb (03/29/2014) [-]
>you's all white
Nah
User avatar #139 to #135 - herbolifee (03/29/2014) [-]
Nah it isn't. I see why you say that but, to everyone here it means nothing more than "black person". I call all my black mates "ma ****** " and such and they only find it fun. It's kinda like, when an entire community (including all the blacks) decide the word no longer has the racist meaning to it, well it kinda stops being racist.
User avatar #110 - tzukaza (03/29/2014) [-]
untill a few years ago my country had a town called ********** , im 100% honest we did have a city like that and i didnt even know it untill i heard they changed name, no racism intended
