Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the word "art" lack a definition?
User avatar #68 to #4 - duedum (08/06/2014) [-]
this is art, yes. but personally I don't like it.

and i'm into modern art
User avatar #28 to #4 - zombiznes (08/06/2014) [-]
actually it has a lot of definitions, as an artist i think the best is "the expression of one's soul" basically expressing thoughts, feelings, etc, whatever makes you an individual by creating something.

So, does it have to be in visual form? Singing is an art. Dancing is an art.

Beauty or emotional power? What if I draw an unpolished generic scribble of a small landscape specifically not to trigger any emotional reactions? This contradicts the last part of the definition, but is supported by the first (application of creativity and imagination). Does this mean that all criteria don't have to be met for something to be considered art?

While I'm at it: I've read that a human can not think of something unless he has already experienced it. Any image you draw is based on something you have seen elsewhere. This means that a product of "creativity" is never something truly unique, but a combination of things the person has already seen.

Feel free to prove me wrong though. That's the best reason to debate.

(also, I've likely missed a few points to argue against cause it's half past ******* midnight)
User avatar #94 to #92 - yunogasaii (08/06/2014) [-]
"typically in a visual form"

Let's say there's Bob, viewing your scribble. He doesn't like it because it doesn't give him any sort of emotions, and it has no beauty to him. Then there's Sally, she likes it because to her it reflects on some part of her life somehow, and to her it is very beautiful. To Bob, it isn't considered art. To Sally, it is.

Yes, that's the reason why we cannot think of new colors or sounds.

All I wanted to do is TECHNICALLY prove you wrong, because you said that art doesn't have a definition, which it technically does.

(it's only 6:40 p.m here)
User avatar #95 to #94 - afaik (08/06/2014) [-]
So what art is and isn't is defined by the perspective of the person and not of the nature of the actual work?

Also, what I then meant to say (thanks for pointing it out btw) is that the word "art" has had several definitions, and not a single one was fully accurate... or something

Basically, the definition of something shouldn't have any exceptions. If it does, it's a flawed definition, hence invalid.
#7 to #4 - fukbritain (08/06/2014) [-]
You are wrong, If a word didn't have a definition it would just be a sound.
User avatar #17 to #7 - bestfoxgirl (08/06/2014) [-]
Many words have very vague definitions, or many different definitions which can even contradict, up to the point that they don't particularly mean anything.

User avatar #91 to #84 - TheHutchie ONLINE (08/06/2014) [-]
Yeah, that's true, but it's used in a lot of parts of The States too. I mean, even if you'd never heard it before in your life, surely it's not that hard to work out how it's spelled?
User avatar #96 to #91 - fukkendragonite (08/06/2014) [-]
I don't get it either mate.

Quick question, independence or no? My local football team played Rangers in a friendly last weekend, and the visiting Rangers fans convinced me that not everyone wants independence. Before that I had just assumed most of Scotland was for it.

Obviously, the reason for this is the whole politics and pro-British and royalist thing behind Rangers as a football club...

Just wondering what your opinion is? Which way is your vote going?
User avatar #99 to #96 - TheHutchie ONLINE (08/07/2014) [-]
I'm voting No, but quite reluctantly.

Truth be told, I want to vote Yes, but I'm thoroughly unconvinced that it's actually possible, especially if we're stuck with the pound for a currency. What's the point of independence if the UK controls your currency anyway? Even if not, we'd spend the next five years with a terrible transport system and barely working education and health services because everything would need to be completely rearranged.

The best thing for Scotland is for a No vote to pass, but only just. This way, we keep all the benefits of being part of the UK, whilst showing them that we're not to be taken lightly, and could break away if we need to. We'd have no need to give up anything due to lack of funding, but we'd also be given more power as a nation and the ability to improve things which otherwise would be untouchable.
User avatar #100 to #99 - fukkendragonite (08/07/2014) [-]
Personally, that's good to hear. I don't think it could work for you guys to be honest. But this is why the English aren't voting on this. I love Britain as a whole, all 4 countries. I prefer the Union Flag to the St George's Cross. I define myself "British" first and "English" second.

So I'm obviously hoping Scotland stays with us.

User avatar #22 to #21 - TheHutchie ONLINE (08/06/2014) [-]
"you all" isn't plural of "you"
"you guys" isn't plural of "you"
"yous" is plural of "you" but is also what I said
"you lot" isn't plural of "you"
"yinz", even though it's spelt wrong, (should be "yins") is a plural of "one" and not "you".

0/5

I'd have given you a mark for "youse", because that's a commonly accepted alternate spelling of what I wrote, but as I originally wrote, "use" is certainly wrong.

I think you missed the point. I'm talking about literally the pluralisation of the word "you", not just terms you can use to describe a group of people.
#23 to #22 - KeiferAFWilliams ONLINE (08/06/2014) [-]
My thing is there is literally no commonly accepted plural of you. It's all by region, apparently you grew up hearing youse, i always hear you guys. None of them are wrong. You lot is like a British 'you guys' and yins is from the Pittsburgh area.
User avatar #24 to #23 - TheHutchie ONLINE (08/06/2014) [-]
I'm not talking about dialects and different word choices based on geographical location, I'm talking about how somebody should spell "yous". Specifically, "yous".

Again, I must reiterate that you are missing the point.
