if you are new to the game play it on hard. you get better way faster than on easy.

Most games worth their salt with have you understand about 90% of the game/genre within the first 10 minutes just from good conveyance. Most games I start off playing I play on medium, because when I play on easy, it feels like I miss out on the whole experience. Then when I become comfortable with the gameplay, I kick it up to hard.

I understand being new to the game, but most of the time you miss out when you play on easy...

What are you talking about, all you had to do was learn from your early mistakes and you were golden. If you didn't redo fights after you died, on the same difficulty, then obviously you wouldn't learn a thing...but seriously why wouldn't you

You probably didn't level your characters up properly, and you pretty much have to do all the side quests

Or if you play it for the story and not for the challenge? (Mass Effect for example)

Love this. Let me spin you some tales.

I am a heavy gamer, and my ex girlfriend couldn't cope with it. Even worse, she was a horrible loser, and a horrible winner. Beat her in a game? Should of gone easier on her, huge strop, literally childish response. Let her win? She brags and boasts and says how she can always do it. I mean, ****, we once played chess and I actually struggled to lose convincingly. Then, after a grueling amount of time losing, she had the nerve to brag. I cannot stress how terrible she was at this. This went for any game though, be it video or not, and losing was a way to incur her wrath. When she once asked me why I didn't go easy on her, I gave her the honest truth; I'm good at games, and if you're not challenged, you won't improve. She didn't like this concept. (In slightly related news, I recently learnt she's decided to study for a doctorate. Take note of everything I just said and appreciate why I laughed so hard at this idea. She barely made it through one year of Uni).

I can never recall where I picked this line up, but I always say, "Learn to fight with two swords." The idea being, it's more difficult to fight with two swords than one, so you become better than you could ever be training with just one sword, and faster. Take this with a pinch of salt, obviously, because they're two different fighting styles, but you get the idea.

People do better when they're FORCED to do better.

As a music major, we have a similar motto. "If you can do it at 160 bpm, you can do it at 120. If you can do it ten times in a row without mistakes, you can do it once."

Was about to point out how different the style of fighting with one weapon is to fighting with two, but then saw the "pinch of salt" and instead typed this.

I usually play games for the story more than anything so easy is usually my go to, but then I play a game like Dark Souls where most of the story is hidden and the difficulty is cranked to 11 and it's great.

I play on easy until it gets boring, then switch up to Normal, from there to hard, and from there to Suicidal/Insane. I thought that was the reason for difficult levels to exist.

Personally, i usually go with normal difficulty at most (if its a game about immersion and story rather than agam thats ABOUT the challenge). not because im not good enough to play on hardest, but because more often then not hardest is game breaking, i shot a guy perfecly in the face at point blank 12 times with a crossbow, and hes only at 2/3 health? game ruining. id prefer if increasing difficulty made the enemies smarter rather than just have more hp.
