Hey guys, I need help from some computer experts.

I have Windows XP and when I logged in this morning, all of my files had gone and the computer had restored itself to factory settings. I'm not very tech wise (as you can probably guess), but I'm certain that I didn't install or agree to anything that would have reset my computer, I also have Norton antivirus which is usually very effective for protecting my computer from viruses. Please can someone tell what may have happened and if there is anyway for me to recover my old files and settings?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Well, I'm no expert either, but try this: Open the command prompt and type exactly this: chkdsk

This will cause the computer to check the hard drive for damage, which may be why you lost your all your data. When it finishes the check, and if it finds damage, type this: chkdsk (space) /f

This will have it attempt to repair any damage it finds (you may need to reboot it first)

Thats if you have hard drive damage, or you could have a virus which hid your files that Norton didn't detect (that program has failed me before) in which case you should go to windows explorer from accessories in the start menu, then tools, folder options, then view, it should give you the option to view hidden files, which will appear as grayed out folders. (you may even find the virus itself unless it jumps from folder to folder).Other than these i'm clueless.
