I've spent hundreds of hours playing DayZ, both the mod, and the stand alone, and I just can't play it anymore. It used to be really good, when the community was smaller. If you met someone in Chernarus, there was a good chance that you could have a chat, and possibly trade supplies, but there was a fair chance that they could try and rob or kill you. There was an element of danger..
Now though, ever since the game has become "popular" so to speak, anyone you come across is almost guaranteed to try to kill you. I've been playing again over the last month, and only met one person who had a gun that didn't just try to blow me away. Of course anyone without a weapon will always shout friendly if you see them, then try to punch you in the back of the head when you turn around for a split second. Then again, maybe I'm just unlucky with the people I meet.

TLR? The player communities in these types of games are mostly cunts, which destroys what could have been a really fun game.

ive played the mod and was considering buying the stand alone / steam version.
pity to hear this the community has become less ''friendly''.
i used to shoot only when i had no other options left.
ahwell, quess ill head to nighttime servers and go axe on a axe murder spree.

often enough i just join one of my servers for the sharpshooting practice, not on actual people, but bot missions, they're really accurate when they shoot back, and they actually move on your position, so cover is a necessity when fighting them

and there's always the chance another player will show up and try to take my stuff, which gives me a challenge
usually doesn't happen though, i take the ammo for my rifle from weapons caches after clearing them when it's there, and leave the rest, and i help others when i can

i think you are just unlucky, personally i try to never shoot on sight, and alot of the people i meet with guns can actually be alright, i think its becuase in the SA its a bit harder to find loot on high population servers, so dying feels more of a problem, people just want to protect their stuff more, i think as the games continues to develop people will get nicer.

Well, I'm not a very lucky person. But I have noticed a very significant increase of assholes playing since the mod first came out.
What annoys me the most is that in the standalone, if you shoot someone anywhere other than the head, you can't loot them because their gear has all been destroyed, yet people still run around with an M4 putting half a clip into anything that moves.
I can only hope that the people get nicer, because I really loved this game.

I generally aim for the head. Unless I've witnessed them do something that really annoys me eg- killing a fresh spawn, in which case i aim for the legs and leave them there.. Not being able to re-spawn at will must be a bitch to these people.

i mean to kill for their loot, its a bigger target than the head and youll make it so they cant get up, then you can run over and finish them off in the head, or leave them there to bleed out, or even bandage them and leave them.

Meh. I tend not to kill people for their gear, mainly out of self defence. Watch some FrankiOnPC. I play almost the same as him, only I try not to announce myself to armed players if I can help it.

Haha I know! It's probably because a lot of the people he meets watch his videos, and know if they mess with him, he'll **** them up. I especially liked the one where the there was a group of German bandits who killed Jack while he was unarmed, and Frankie killed all of them. He got very lucky there.

I do. It's very rare for people to get the slip on me. I'm talking about the way the players have changed from having a good chance of finding someone who is friendly, to everyone just playing a free for all. Just something that turns me off the game. If there truly was a Zombie apocalypse, would you go around with an M4, and empty the clip into someone just for their can of beans?
If you're unarmed and in need of a weapon, or supplies, I'll help where I can, or direct you to what you want.

You get this a lot on public hives. My best experience was playing on a small independent server that had a lot of regulars. Hopefully they'll bring out some really good private servers eventually. That aren't spammed with 100 billion vehicles or guns anywhere.

I have to completely agree with you on that, i have only a few good stories to tell on the standalone(like stopping a rape) but on the mod i have way way more, of tense trades and wars with groups, and having ******* mercenaries trying to find me and my group because we stole the wrong guys helicopter,of having to mercy kill team mates in the middle of nowhere and having the feeling of "oh ****, i'm never going to talk to them again" because most of my team was random survivors with no contacts out of the game. Now a days its just a death match with zombies.

I decided to abandon surviving all together and become a hat merchant in DayZ, so I walked, not ran, across the roads and towns to collect hats and backpacks so I can carry more hats. Every time I met someone, I would yell out "Hello good sir, would you like to buy a hat?"

Usually, they would run away in fear because they thought I would murder them with a gun or axe, but a few people came up and traded items they would find lying around for the hats I carried. Only once was I killed, and that was due to a fist fight I lost with a fresh spawn. Truthfully, playing as a hat merchant is a bit more fun than actually surviving and getting stressed out at the sight of other people. Plus, it's nice to walk right up to a sniper and have him trade useless items with you.

Haha! That's awesome. I'd definitely buy a hat from a roaming merchant. It would be kind of funny even if someone did kill you. They'd go to loot you and be like "....The ****? Hats??"

I'm going with this gig until I find someone who wants to travel with me. Maybe start a war-band of hat sellers or medics to help people out, but that probably wont happen.

Totally agree.

Back when there was just the mod, my first encounter ever was with a sniper who tried to shoot me, missed a whole bunch, gave me a gun as a prize for surviving, and left. I got in a car with another guy, drove around all day, just for him to admit he had planned on killing me and didn't because I'd helped him so much. Made other friends while looting, got shot at by bandits, and tried to hunt them down together (but failed). I even got airlifted by a chopper off of a building once by some random guys, who then DIDN'T kill me when I found an AS50 at a crash site.

You just don't see that **** anymore.

I've spent the last couple of weeks just watching other players from the hills around the major spawn points and around Cherno. If I see any player try to harm another unprovoked, they catch a couple of Mosin or AS50 rounds to the head. If you try to shoot an unarmed spawn, I'll shoot you in the leg, and leave you there. It probably makes no difference because that unarmed player who I just saved probably just tried to do exactly the same thing to someone else... It used to be you could have epic adventures, fix a heli and pick up fellow survivors and form a clan, hunt down and fight off bandits, make a base to store all your loot etc. Now all I see is people playing deathmatch..
I really wish this game didn't get as much publicity as it did.

I always liked people like that. Sort of unofficial police, taking care of the server.

I just remember it being so hard to get good loot. So people really valued their gear and didn't want to just randomly fight. Lead to things like robberies instead of firefights, base raids, all this exciting stuff that's just gone now.

Good times, man.

Meh. DayZ advertises itself as a zombie survival game, yet it has surprisingly little focus on zombies or survival.
The entire game revolves around "gear up and go fight people". There is no scavenging to survive against zombies, there is no joy in fighting zombies, there is no simulation of what a zombie apocalypse would actually be. It's little more than a PVP game that happens to have zombies in it, that are more of a nuisance than anything.

I think the biggest problem is the engine. It's just not made for this kind of game. I don't know how the developers didn't understand that. I mean, even the arma 3 engine would have been better.

no it does not. it uses a mixup between take on helicopters and arma 2. It's not that hard to spot. just compare the features, and you might notice it(stances, Lighting, Animations, etc. ).

It doesn't seem like take on helicopters to me, and ArmA II's engine is far choppier than standalone. By what I can tell from digging around in the game it uses a heavily modified ArmA 3 engine.

You can just google it, ffs. it says: Take on helicopters, modified with parts of the arma 3 engine (no idea how much). Since TO:H is modified Arma 2 engine, that would make it a heavily modified version of Arma 2 engine.

And seriously, just compare the lighting.

I remember playing with a bunch of guys I didn't know, one of them was Shosho (a pretty big Youtuber) and it was really fun. I was just a random 15 year old Norwegian boy and they were really friendly. It was a while ago and back when DayZ was alright. Now I don't play it anymore and I don't know what it's like. I can't be bothered playing alone either, that would be boring :- / Seeing this picture just made me remember and I felt the need to comment, fair enough if nobody reads it.
