95% chance to hit: MISS!
Muton: 19% chance to hit: Critical.

Love/Hate X-Com

Don't forget when you have a 95% shotgun, literally right in their face and it misses, but you can then get a 1% sniper shot. Hell, I've gotten cross map shotguns because of ****** line of sight
User avatar #104 to #26 - fatajani (10/06/2013) [-]
True story, sir! I usually just shoot missiles and throw bombs. They seem to make me feel better after a few consecutive misses xD

ikr. Anything more than 50% should be a guaranteed hit, and I curse Random Number Jesus every time it isn't so. But the tactical grid based part of it always keeps me going.

IDK man, I was born with near a god-tier RNG gift. I turned around a 3 star deficeit in Mario Party 6 in the last two turns, I've beaten Lance by getting 2 critical hits in a row with Slash, I've just had.. amazing luck, a pic related amount of luck.

User avatar #90 to #86 - greenwithenvy (10/05/2013) [-]
Mario is kinda PvP kinda PvE depending on the game. MP9 is PvE mostly, some of the games it's not really you fighting against a person like on the bumper balls and stuff, other minigames are just "good luck getting the higher score!"

my sniper duo ******* owned in that game. Just inch forward the whole squad a little each turn and then have my snipers (one with doubletap one with in the zone) devastate the enemy. In the zone guy takes out every single weak guy in the open on the first turn, doubletap guy takes 2 hard hitting shots. then my shotty wielding assault troops (2 of em) run up and blam the leftovers at point blank range. and then my medic shoots ineffectively from a hidden place.

My brother and I are convinced that X-COM's % system isn't based on chance to hit but chance to miss. It seems like the instant you get a 95% or higher to hit you miss and anything below 10% doesn't.

Firaxis is just trolling us, I swear it.
User avatar #33 to #22 - seras ONLINE (10/05/2013) [-]

How'd you get overrun? Didn't have a rocket available? Or some lucky alien shot chances?
User avatar #25 to #24 - fiyerdragon (10/04/2013) [-]
well you see there was only 2 aliens to begin with, a hovercraft thingy and a repair drone then the game decided it would be nice to set every alien spawn next to each other and when i moved my shotgun girl up to the right she spotted em all. Does that answer sufficiently?
User avatar #31 to #23 - seras ONLINE (10/05/2013) [-]
Have you played the original ones for DOS? That's asskicking at it's finest, especially the second game. Holy **** . Took me some time.
User avatar #32 to #31 - fiyerdragon (10/05/2013) [-]
No but I did watch my dad's friend play it and man did it look more complicated back then.
User avatar #34 to #32 - seras ONLINE (10/05/2013) [-]
It still is, my friend, it still is. But I like that. Today most games are far too watered down, I find.
Kikoskia, a british Let's Player, made a video series of X-COM and X-COM 2. One series he played with only ONE base, at the south pole. Didn't last long.
User avatar #36 to #34 - fiyerdragon (10/05/2013) [-]
Yea old games like that usually have better design for people who actually want to feel rewarded for doing something right. Watching my dad's friend accidentally rebound a grenade back at his soldier was hilarious to watch though

I'd like to point out that one guy is in Titan armor and the other is in recruit armor. The likelihood of the guy in high tech armor w/ a laser sniper rifle going suicidal that he didn't save a boot recruit is as low as his apparent chance to hit.

I don't even let my people take their helmets off until they reach Sergeant. You get to show your face to the team when they're relatively sure you're worth even remembering.
User avatar #68 to #30 - schneidend (10/05/2013) [-]

Good old XCOM. I love the game but it seems like it cheats for itself.

Of course Ironman Impossible doesn't help. Ha
User avatar #97 to #93 - Mastervaughn ONLINE (10/05/2013) [-]
i found out that the computer indeed uses glitches against you too. like one of the glitches i found so you can move twice and go into overwatch, they did it on me too.
User avatar #99 to #97 - pigglysumbeech (10/05/2013) [-]
Yeah, I prefer the PC version. There's mods out there that fix their cheating.

Only problem with mods is that sometimes they glitch out your game and increase something like your movement speed by 30 more blocks. At least that's what happened to me.

User avatar #16 to #9 - fuzzyballs (10/04/2013) [-]
by your logic, you should hit at least once every 10 shots
you get a 90% chance to hit every shot, that's all you need to know
User avatar #41 to #16 - misfitxcreepx (10/05/2013) [-]
No, by his logic, which is also simply called "logic" or "statistics" or "basic arithmetic", you should hit 9 shots out of every 10. You should miss at least once every 10.
Statistically, if you shoot 10 times and each one has a 90% chance to hit, you should hit 9 times and miss once. Obviously this isn't always the case cause that's how the world works, but theoretically and statistically speaking, that's how it is.
