OMG I've heard this like a dozen times. People act like a group of gamers with no formal education got together and used their superhuman problem solving skills gained from decades of playing video games to crack a problem that's baffled PhD's. When what really happened was a bunch of scientists looked at a problem and said "Yeah we could probably take a year designing a sophisticated algorithm then run it on a really expensive computer, or we could just get a bunch of lazy gamers to do it for free since they don't have anything better to do anyway."

Except that they can't design the sophisticated algorithm, and are currently monitoring the actions of the people playing FoldIt in hopes to be able to build their AI up to the point where this algorithm can indeed exist.
