this is actually the main question of being a teacher. how much influence do I exert over my students to push them in the direction of being good people and is my definition and understanding of a good person good enough? For more info on this issue look up Jean Jacques Rousseau it also extends to parenting if rephrased

My own view of a good person is an idea of live and let live but dont bend over backwards for others. some people preach "tolerance" to the point of self annihalation and some preach standing your ground to ludicrous levels of obstinate ignorance.
to each their own but in my classroom I have to create a functional environment that allows dignity and difference. Because kids are different and they need to learn how to work with other people especially people they dont like.. think about your current job and they need to learn to stand up for themselves and say piss off.

I'v been clinically depressed since the second grade. No seriously, like whatever depression you've had in your life multiply it by 10 and then imagine being in second grade with it. ****** hard for adults, but when you're a kid you don't even know why you're so sad or that there are ways to treat it. Wasn't until eighth grade that I got diagnosed and treated, but by then my arm looked like it was ripped apart by a dog multiple times due to the self mutilation. It's still awkward trying to explain the scars to people decades after the wounds healed over.

I'm always amazed by how inconsiderate some people can be. Nobody wants to have their scars brought up in public, no matter how you got them they're personal and private. When put on the spot myself I've had luck with the line "they're a reminder of my young and stupid days" or my personal favorite "what scars? HOLY **** WHEN DID THOSE GET THERE?!"

Both convey that "none of your ******* business" vibe I'm going for. Also god bless, hope you're in a better place.

When i was nine i had ptsd and was suppressing what memories of my wonderful early childhood that i could my dad beating the **** out of everyone putting a shot gun in my moms mouth then beating her with it when he pulled the trigger and it wasnt loaded/she wouldnt tell him where the shells were sheing my 4yo little sister get raped seeing my first dead body seeing someone get shot ect while being on 3x the recommended adult male dose of my antidepressants/anxiety meds. I usually enjoy these posts, but the last one about transgender people really ******* bothered me.

Why? Because my girlfriend is trans.

Hormone blockers don't just postpone the decision they have an immediate suppresive effect on the growth of the child. At least that's how I've understood it.
So at that point a serious decision has already been made whether or not they want to continue their transformation later on in life.

Try explaining that to a child to the point that they are absolutely certain they know hat effect their own choice will have on themselves.

That's the mechanism by which the decision is postponed. Again you have to undergo years of evaluation before you'd even have the option towards this.

Hormone blockers are safer than straight up HRT. Presumably you're of the opinion that the best solution is to simply refuse medical care at all, but that's obviously not going to happen in any kind of western society: "do no harm" and all. The regrets of some people are not a valid reason to restrict necessary medical care that you personally don't find important.

It is indeed emotional when regarding kids. Any adult can make his own hopefully informed decision for all i care.

Especially when it comes to what is allowed, what should be prescribed and what parents supposed to do or at least advised to do i have a lot of doubts.
For example i can't see how the transition is described as medical care and defined as necessary. because those terms make it a lot more absolute. As in if you don't undergo these procedures you are being harmed by not getting them. This i feel is quite backwards.

You may need to use medical facilities for the procedures but quite frankly it's more so intended as a therapy than as medical care? Though that might just be semantics

As i see it inducing irreversible change or halting biological growth periods at the ages when they would naturally occur are a lot more likely to cause harm. And yet more than once i've heard people talk of these procedures to be necessary for children.
Yes they don't get surgery but denying the body of growth periods and hormone influxes during periods where it should be taking place can't be a positive for the body.

If a child fails to learn a language before the age of six the window of opportunity has passed for it to smoothly learn the language softly put there are massive disadvantages to learning a language if no native language is picked up .
similar to this example I can't believe hormone blockers or hormone therapy are not or can not be harmful in and of themselves due to their very purpose of blocking biological functions at times when one's body has them scheduled.

Many hormonal conditions cause people great discomfort beyond transgenderism. The same technique is applied there. Are you saying that those people are being impacted negatively by having their natural secretions moderated artificially?

The purpose of hormone blockers is to inhibit such development... that's not a risk, it's the primary function.

Doctors are fully aware of how hormones affect the body, and tailor dosage accordingly. Just like any other medicine risk is weighed against reward.

A lot of kids "grow out of it" that is to say they were never "in it" at all , but there are still plenty who need this kind of treatment. They can't be cured with fresh air and sunshine anymore than a quadriplegic could grow their limbs back with thoughts and prayers.

It's not that they don't matter, but it doesn't actually relate to what they regret. Regret is part of the standard gamut of human emotions. Someone might regret a relationship, that doesn't mean the relationship was abusive; just that they didn't like it in hindsight.

Sure if that person's faculties are compromised you help them, but transpeople are in not in any way mentally compromised. Specifically speaking the "problem" is that their body doesn't match their brain, more specifically their brain structure doesn't match their chromosomes. Now, you can change the brain structure, but then it's not really the same person anymore. Changing the body is a lot more difficult, but fundamentally that's the only method which doesn't violate the Hippocratic oath to 'do no harm'. Again, we don't even know if we can do what you're describing, but I'm pretty convinced that we shouldn't.

If my 9-year-old kid comes up to me and tells me he wants to be a girl, I'll say, "cool" and buy him some dresses and call him "her" if he wants.

There is no way in HELL I'd get any kind of body-altering drugs or surgery for my child. I'd wait until he was 18 and he could do it himself if he was still feeling dysphoric. I'm not letting my child make a life changing decision that cannot be taken back before they're old enough to vote.

I think the modern problem is that kids are now exposed to this idea at a very young age (in the media, internet, etc.) and kids being kids and little attention monsters, will just decide they want to be transgender. I have a sneaking suspicion this is what Angelina Jolie's kid is doing.

My aunt used to be my uncle before, but she changed around 5 years ago, i have full respect for those who are better off getting a sex change, but a major key in this is how ones brain and body is built, some people are just born like that, but the only way to know is to test for other factors as well (like trauma and similar) and if there is such things, deal with them first.

Trans community is pretty toxic, but I think anyone who calls themselves trans shouldn't be called "trans," if you know what I mean. If your aunt says she's trans, she is.
