I learned to skip and move on over the years but it's quite a significant barrier to entry

While they do have a couple of outliers, just like everything, it's generally only a matter of the same rhythms and melodies. A basic mass produced tune, something easy to make and catchy enough, then you have the lyrics as well, that matter very little. Designed to be simple, generic, something everyone can relate to, radio friendly, easy to like.
There's nothing wrong with enjoying stuff like this. What's important is what YOU listen to. My point is that people who's really into music wouldn't listen to a lot of this. The big downside is that it is generic. And for lyrics. We can see how little lyrics matter in western pop as well. Look at Katy Perry or Gaga, for instance.

Some people are really into music, the same way some people are really into Japan, guns, or cars. It's pretty obvious why someone you describe as "really into music" wouldn't listen to much of J-pop, though maybe some. There are literally thousands of reasons for it. Someone who goes deep into music would not end up in the more general areas, simply put. You wouldn't say "he's really into music", when describing someone listening to K-pop 10 hours a day. You'd rather say "He's really into K-pop", or some variation. The other description would fit better for someone listening to multiple genres and/or artist, or focus a lot on the technical stuff.
It's easy to circlejerk, repeat the same views over and over and over and over, so if you like you can continue to put words in my mouth.
