It was announced in god damned 1998.

Yes, it's old.

It's a perfect example of what FPS games could be achieving.

It's a pretty damn good FPS with god tier re-playability, but I wouldn't seat it THAT high.

You're just looking for reasons to say it isn't among the best, or even a good standard.

Name a better modern FPS. This thing is ancient by technology standards, and yet it still garners a more consistent playerbase than CoDs that came out a year ago.

I never said or implied either of those things.
TF2 is unique, funny, and really damn fun, that implies that it's way up there and one of the best, and certainly one of my all time favorites.
#617 to #610 - epicscorpion (08/07/2014) [-]
Then what's wrong with calling it a good example of what an FPS should be?
#1273 to #617 - kinginyellow (08/07/2014) [-]
Because it's one KIND of FPS, not an accumulation of the genre of a whole. It's what every cartoony and comedic FPS should be, having weapons that are fun to use and look exaggerated, funny characters with personality (in all the "meet the x" videos), and a complete lack of realism in favour of making a game about running around just having fun and playing around. But to follow TF2 wouldn't be wise, not every game is a class-based multiplayer only game.

Some FPS are good for not being the same, Farcry 3 doesn't feel like TF2 and it's good that it doesn't, it focuses on insanity and the main character losing his mind while also giving the player a sense of pseudo-realism to feel like he's just grabbing on to reality. Bioshock is an FPS that's centred around creepy, tight corridors and upgrading weapons, scavenging for ammo and health in a ruined city. Metro 2033 has a lot of game making you want to hold onto ammo and focus on stealth rather than fighting because you might not find any more, plus having 2 types of ammo, one of which is used as currency.

TLDR: Maybe all cartoon-style multiplayer-only FPS games should be like TF2, but FPS is a massive genre and some games would lose all fun and identity if they tried to be like TF2

I'm not saying all games with guns centered in the first-person should copy TF2.

I'm saying, devs should pull their heads out of their asses and stop thinking gritty, brown, "realistic" military shooters that have 90% automatic weapons should dominate their market, when they could be working on polishing the gameplay, and not the graphics.

And if the game isn't multiplayer-based, why are you comparing it anyway? And I never said TF2 should be the ONLY example.

"Then what's wrong with calling it a good example of what an FPS should be"

You just said FPS, and that covers any FPS game, and I'm saying they shouldn't all be like it. Even L4D, which is multiplayer-based, differs greatly from TF2's style and it's great.

And honestly, if you actually bother to look past CoD and Battlefield, a lot of FPS aren't the "realistic" shooters you describe. Bioshock series, Rainbow 6 series (ya it's military but it's a tactical game where you need to be able to use your team and corresponding abilities), Halo series, Farcry series, Left 4 Dead games, hell even the Crysis games let you explore some cool areas and break the realism style by letting you run through cover and kick cars at people.
#1297 to #1290 - epicscorpion (08/07/2014) [-]
Then I suppose by those standards, nothing is a good example to strive for. Everything should find its own, completely unique style, independent of guidance from any other game.

TF2 still holds arguably the best multiplayer experience, and very good mechanics, at the very least. There's no harm in thinking, "Hey, maybe I should be as good as that, too."
User avatar #1299 to #1297 - kinginyellow (08/07/2014) [-]
Wow way to completely misread all of what I said. I'm saying TF2 is good, I'm also saying the game's style isn't the only thing an FPS has to achieve to be good, it's just one of many different styles, and that the "gritty realism FPS horde" is far from as big as people claim.

And if you paid attention, I never said TF2 wasn't good, I just said if every FPS followed TF2 and started copying it, then it wouldn't as good. Variety can be good and bad, and if everyone just copies one game as it's layout we lose variety.
#329 to #124 - epicscorpion (08/07/2014) [-]
I completely agree. The mechanics are fluid, there are extremely varied weapon types, nothing is ambiguous. It's so simple, yet so deep.

its pretty good but i wouldnt go that far...
User avatar #290 to #282 - thatnerdyguy (08/07/2014) [-]
It's what, almost 8 years old? And it's still thriving (growing in popularity even). All while being free to play, and not pay to win.
I stand by what I said. It shows that FPS games can be more than what the realistic shooter era has made them into.
User avatar #1307 to #290 - kinginyellow (08/07/2014) [-]
They are though, there are many series that aren't CoD or Battlefield if you just look.
#316 to #290 - anon (08/07/2014) [-]
The playerbase for that game is decreasing. And Valve as a gaming company is probably in large part to blame since they insist on milking the cash cow that is Team Fortress 2 because fools continue to engage in the Hatconomy. It's like Farmville, but nobody is disillusioned into thinking Farmville is anything other than a money machine.

"I'll just call it bait, then I don't have to counter his argument!"
Valve doesn't update the game because they're nice guys, don't be so deluded.
