those things have enormous mouths and although it eats small things like you said, they sometimes swallow big fish and could also swallow a human. When and if it happened the whale shark would close it mouth until the fish/human would be digested. so yeah..

i dont wanna be that guy, but per Dr.Craig McClain in a smithsonian based article "I know that the esophagus of a whale shark measures only inches across. The massive beast could not choke me down even if it preferred man meat to plankton."

Well it was a long time ago i got my information but whale shark isn't whale. the whale part is just a name.
User avatar #43 to #41 - DontDeleteMeAgain (03/23/2014) [-]
if you read the article you would know its not strictly talking about whales lol
User avatar #42 to #41 - icelandicviking ONLINE (03/23/2014) [-]
ok nvm i didn't read enough to see the article isn't about the general whale.

I'd be more frightened of this one. that mouth is just huge
User avatar #49 to #22 - divinecreator (03/23/2014) [-]
it eats little things via filtration were talking plankton sized, it would spit anything too big out in a heartbeat
User avatar #50 to #49 - fishinyourface (03/23/2014) [-]
it would still be terrifying to just fall into its mouth or something
User avatar #51 to #50 - bendingtimeisgood ONLINE (03/23/2014) [-]
But, It has a tiny throat, which can't swallow anything bigger than a grapefruit, so It would immediately cough you back up.

Looks like a whale shark. It only eats shrimp and other tiny aquatic animals.
User avatar #14 to #11 - gragasvlad (03/23/2014) [-]
I still don't get why it's called a shark it's more like a whalefish than a shark
User avatar #16 to #14 - geofalke (03/23/2014) [-]
It's called a whale shark because it's in the same family as sharks. It has cartilage for a skeletal system instead of bone like a normal fish would.
User avatar #17 to #16 - gragasvlad (03/23/2014) [-]
I know But shark makes it sound so terrifying even though it's almost cuddly
User avatar #28 to #17 - dunkleosteus (03/23/2014) [-]
if there was a species of vegetarian tiger, would you want people to call it a stripy cow?
User avatar #30 to #28 - gragasvlad (03/23/2014) [-]
Depends does it still look like a tiger?
User avatar #31 to #30 - dunkleosteus (03/23/2014) [-]
whale sharks look like sharks
User avatar #33 to #31 - gragasvlad (03/23/2014) [-]
they are huge like whales and the shape is a blend of shark and whale, the point I was making was that they are not carnivorous and the features that sharks have that make them look scary are not present in the whaleshark.

Thus FISH!
User avatar #34 to #33 - dunkleosteus (03/23/2014) [-]
dude. they're sharks. they look like sharks, they swim like sharks, they're shaped like sharks. they're large. your argument has no standing. go away.
#36 to #33 - jvcjvc (03/23/2014) [-]
A shark is a fish, and this does not look like a whale in any way which is also a mammal. (the whaleshark or wtf it is called in english is the largest fish on this planet
User avatar #38 to #36 - gragasvlad (03/23/2014) [-]
And thats why I want it to be called a Whalefish.

It's called a whaleshark because it's biologicaly shark like and it size and food source makes it alot like a whale.
User avatar #90 - ajperry (03/23/2014) [-]
**** yes I do, that right there son is a Whale Shark, it eats microscopic plankton and is harmless to humans.

no. i want to cry. for some reason i can't explain, i am terrified of undersea (or just underwater in general) "monsters".
User avatar #58 to #57 - rockmanfan ONLINE (03/23/2014) [-]
that "monster" is a whale shark, the largest fish known to man. it only eats plankton and will let you hang onto it's fin while it glides along.
