Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy takes out his phone and calls the emergency services.

He gasps: "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says: "Calm down, I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence, then a gunshot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says: "OK, now what?"

I think, where cosplay is concerned, people should stop being such twats about the "quality" of a cosplay. Yes, the better quality cosplays are going to look better. But not everyone has the time and/or money to fund and create them. So yes, there are going to be people who use what they have available to cosplay, and they're not going to look "as good". But in the end, we're all nerds dressing up as characters, and for some of these people, the fandoms they're in is a safe haven from the real world. They might not be fully comfortable with themselves unless they're dressed as a character, and if you're going to be a dick about them, here's a word of advice. Don't.
User avatar #34 to #20 - jnovuse (04/10/2014) [-]
User avatar #66 to #20 - joeyliquid (04/10/2014) [-]
Nah. It's my opinion to call a bad cosplay. If it's a **** cosplay it's a **** cosplay, if it's a good cosplay it's a good cosplay. If they don't have the body figure for it, to ******* bad go the gym or put eat tons of food to fit to it. If their costume looks **** because they use cereal boxes for shoulder-pads or some **** , I'm going to call it **** . DEAL WITH IT.
People have opinions regardless of what type of world you exist in, if your doing it for your own satisfaction then great. But then why do you have pictures of yourself, for everyone to see?..
If you can't deal with the heat, don't step into the ************* frying pan.
It's okay if your doing a joke cosplay, they always make me laugh
User avatar #68 to #66 - infernalinsolence (04/10/2014) [-]
I take pictures of my cosplays because I'm proud of the work and effort I have been able to put into them. It's not nearly as much as some cosplayers, and I'll admit that. I don't buy in wigs, I don't buy in cloth and make my own costumes - I can't afford that, and I don't have the time to make things, mostly because I'm a lazy git. I closet-cosplay at best. But I'm still proud of the work I do, and I take photos because of that.
Yes, I'll do research into the kind of makeup the characters I cosplay have. Whether it's actual makeup or, in the case of Jadzia Dax, markings. I'll look it up, try and work with the things I have to make it work. And it comes out alright. Are they the best cosplays? No. They're okay, and I'm happy with that.
But I've been pointed out as a **** cosplayer before, and it's hit me hard. I know I'm not the best. I'm not striving to be the best. I'm not Ash. But to have something I put any amount of time into called " **** " or "bad", it's going to hurt.

And to be honest, I'm fairly sure most of the cosplays using cereal boxes are joke cosplays.

Fair enough, but you gotta learn to deal with it.
I just get ******* rustled when I see someone like Lara Croft who is portrayed as a slim busty girl, THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE SERIES played by obese girl and she cries that people call her cosplay **** . I just wonder why. Also applies to males, like fat guys that try to cosplay as Hercules or some **** , my ******* eyes bro.
But yeah, I agree with your comments. But as far as money via cosplay goes that's completely okay, as-long you don't truly stoop to 20 dosh for a outfit, have some pride in nerdifying it up.
Oh and going the extra mile for your cosplay and going to the gym is pretty cool as **** .
User avatar #72 to #70 - infernalinsolence (04/10/2014) [-]
If I can't afford wigs, I can't afford a gym membership. I work out when I can.
Personally, I could cosplay Lara, but I don't quite have the right face in my own opinion to pull it off even with contouring makeup. I do try to stick to body type and what I've got, if only to avoid being called **** . But I just wish I wouldn't have to worry about that if I ever go to a con. Then again, people said Hugh Jackman was too tall when he walked around a con in costume, which says just how ****** people are.
User avatar #75 to #72 - joeyliquid (04/10/2014) [-]
Oh and I can help you with getting fit into body types.
User avatar #74 to #72 - joeyliquid (04/10/2014) [-]
That's just stupid as **** to call Hugh Jackman too tall, some people are to up their own asses. But anyway, you don't need to go gym to get fit. You can do a lot of exercise out of the gym and still succeed, I mean half the time I see girls on running tread mills and matts doing exercises. That stuff you can do at your own house and you can jog wherever the **** you please.
But yeah sometimes you just gotta realize you can't properly do this character because you simply don't fit it, it's not like everyone it's a amazing singer and not like everyone looks exactly how they want.
To sum it up: Have pride in your cosplay and don't try to be something you really can't fit into because you didn't make the extra effort for it Which kinda ******* insults the cosplay itself if you didn't put the effort in , and just ignore the people who go a bit to far perfect cosplays. You don't have to be perfect, but don't let yourself be a obese whale and play samus or something. No one ******* appreciates it, apart from yourself.
#77 to #74 - infernalinsolence (04/10/2014) [-]
That's true enough. I'd be a hypocrite if I said that thinking of a person who is heavily overweight as comparable to a whale. I tend to keep such opinions to myself, though. But yeah. I don't just throw **** together and say LOOK I'M COSPLAYING LOVE ME I'M SUCH A NERD XOXOXO
Okay I have thrown stuff together but I've thought about what clothes fit the character a little at the same time. But I've never said that thing. I'm happy being a nerd but I'm not going to promote it to the entire world on Facebook. I'll nerd out with my friends and if someone on Facebook recognises a cosplay I post, I'll nerd out with them too.
Pic related. It's one of my better cosplays. Jadzia Dax, DS9. Halloween last year. And for that, I'm fairly sure I bought in the top special for the cosplay.
User avatar #78 to #77 - joeyliquid (04/10/2014) [-]
Yeah, I'm glad you see where I'm coming from. I admit I'm a bit of dick at times, but people gotta realize they just ******* everything up with their cosplays.
But also your cosplay looks great, it's just a shame you didn't style your hair into hers. It would of a took a bit of time and probably quite a bit of styling gel oh and a hair tie, since she has the pony-tail look going on.
User avatar #80 to #78 - infernalinsolence (04/10/2014) [-]
Yeah, I do admit there does sometimes have to be thought in the cosplaying process. But sometimes in a particular fandom there just isn't anything available for a body type. I can't cosplay almost anything from my favourite game because a) I'd have to buy in things for it and customise things which are things already discussed, and b) Many of the female NPCs have tiny tits. And the player characters generally can't be customised into having a reasonable body for the average woman. Plus I'd have to get a chihuahua and make it look like a fire elemental.
User avatar #79 to #78 - joeyliquid (04/10/2014) [-]
Oh and maybe a bit more detail in the marking on the side of your face, pehraps adding darker tons and going closer to the hair lines would be a greater idea. If you ever cosplay her again that is.
#82 to #79 - infernalinsolence (04/10/2014) [-]
Yeah, with the thing I was planning to use a pencil eyeliner but we found it rubbed too much when I sat down to the makeup. I used a liquid liner instead but I didn't want it getting too into my hair because it can be a bitch to wash out.
Picture attached is another cosplay that I actually did today. Experimenting with Myka Bering from Warehouse 13.
User avatar #83 to #82 - joeyliquid (04/10/2014) [-]
Don't worry, just use mods for that **** . I use USP mod for skyrim on PC, you get to adjust your character to however you want. Yes I have a woman character on skyrim, don't judge. We all have at least one opposite gender character we make. < from previous post
But yeah the cosplay looks fine, and it's bitch getting the right cosmetic at times. Since I know a bit about makeup, since well.. I just do. I often check make-up advice videos online for certain problems, sometimes it's fixed with buying the correct base and what have you.

User avatar #89 to #83 - infernalinsolence (04/10/2014) [-]
I run a makeup page on facebook with the central idea of running makeup on a budget. None of the stuff I actually own costs more than £9. Except for one foundation and lipstick, both of which are L'Oreal. The lipstick's a good tone for me but the foundation is from my goth/scene phase and too pale. Way too pale.
Unfortunately, with makeup, there is always the risk of losing quality because you're saving on money. The pencil liner I was going to use for Jadzia was in a set that was about 10 items for something like £5? So basically each item works out to £0.50 roughly. The blush in that set is really good though.
User avatar #96 to #89 - joeyliquid (04/10/2014) [-]
Ahh I see, all i can say about saving for makeup is to watch semi-famous you-tubers. They often have price reductions from certain brands in their names, for their promotions and advertising their brand. Also you can google promotions and stuff like " Coupon for makeup >insert site<". Not sure how many times I have done this, but being a cheap bastard saves money so whatever.
Also checking around for a decent site can help a lot, but that applies to everything. Oh and checking a few forums websites if you know any, that also sometimes works.
But it does eventually come down to cost-efficiency and how much your willing to spend.
User avatar #86 to #83 - joeyliquid (04/10/2014) [-]
Oh and I was going to suggest liquid eyeliner but you already you use it. But probably using a primer might help.
User avatar #91 to #86 - infernalinsolence (04/10/2014) [-]
I always lose my primers. I bought a Rimmel one to test it but it disappeared, and I bought one for eyeshadow because I had a phase of doing a lot with eye makeup and I lost that too.
#237 to #20 - anon (04/10/2014) [-]
I never actually thought about it that way. But I also believe that its harmless if we draw a bit of fun from their efforts. Btw i think you're pretty
User avatar #514 to #20 - berkut (04/11/2014) [-]
If the poin of the cosplay is to look ridiculous, then maybe it's right. But if you tried to actually do it, it's better to don't do it. There's one thing called sense of ridiculeness, and it sometimes is helpful to have it.
What you try to imply here is you can cosplay but just for the fun, but in the end, some of them actually cosplay a certain character just because it's the only one they can do for many reasons like not enough money or the physical appereance.
User avatar #100 to #20 - thenamlessguy (04/10/2014) [-]
It's not that the cosplay is bad, it's that the people wearing it say that it's the greatest thing ever.
User avatar #101 to #100 - infernalinsolence (04/10/2014) [-]
In honesty, sometimes I think the people who say their cosplay is the best thing ever feel it is because they've put time, money and effort into it. While, yes, sometimes it's annoying to hear people be arrogant and boastful, there's also nothing wrong with taking a bit of pride in something you've worked on, in whatever capacity you've been able to.
User avatar #102 to #101 - thenamlessguy (04/10/2014) [-]
Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear enough:

All the encounters I've seen, it's been someone in a horrible cosplay saying that their cosplay is much, much better than one that is blatantly better. At that point, it's not pride.
User avatar #107 to #102 - infernalinsolence (04/10/2014) [-]
Possibly jealousy, then? At a point like that, it's likely people are giving the better cosplay more recognition and would like to receive some of that recognition themselves.

Even if their Cosplay isn't done PROFESSIONALLY, they still enjoy it and are having a good time.

Yeah, their cosplay isn't gonna be done as well as someone who is getting paid to dress up, have the proper materials, and possibly a team of people, but they do it, and they probably are proud of their costumes.

So who the **** are you to tell them that something their proud of is wrong or stupid?
