******** . Tolkien described Aragorn as a war-weary veteran with lots of cuts, and long filthy hair.
If you're going to blame someone, blame Peter Jackson.
User avatar #39 to #5 - ljxjlos (10/11/2013) [-]
Also, considering the cuts: Numenoreans are supposed to have incredible health. Illness doesn´t smite them down as fast as normal humans, scars fade, wounds heal faster....

I already have enough to blame Peter Jackson for

He was also 87 years old (during The Two Towers). Add that into the equation as well.
User avatar #25 to #15 - fistymcbeefpunch (10/11/2013) [-]
That isn't very old for somebody in his line. At 87 he was nearing the prime of his life.
#30 to #25 - pwnmissilereborn **User deleted account** (10/11/2013) [-]
Yeah, most of the Dúnedain lived about 200 years.
User avatar #37 to #30 - gamerase (10/11/2013) [-]
I don't know man, Eradan died at 117 and his successor died at 111. Then his successor, Belegorn, died at 130. I'm pretty sure 87 years old was past Aragorn's prime.

Even Arathorn (the first) only lived 155 years. Aragorn the first (Aragorn's forefather) lived 100 years.
#40 to #37 - pwnmissilereborn **User deleted account** (10/11/2013) [-]
Aragorn II died at 210.

Both Arathorn I and Aragorn I died of wolf attacks, not natural causes.
Arathorn II, Aragorn's father died quite early, but he was slain by orcs.
Arador, Aragorn's grandfather was killed by a troll at Arador's End.

What Eradan are you talking about? The one from War in the North or the Steward of Gondor?
User avatar #93 to #40 - gamerase (10/12/2013) [-]
I admit I don't remember how Arathorn I and Aragorn I died, I was consulting a document with the years of reign and ages of the characters.

As for Eradan, I was referring to the Steward, the one descending from Húrin's house. I wasn't aware there was another one, but I guess it's from the videogame?
#96 to #93 - pwnmissilereborn **User deleted account** (10/12/2013) [-]
Yeah, there is a Dunedain ranger in LotR: War in the North called Eradan but I don't think he is even canon.

Anyway, Eradan and Belegorn probably lived less because some of the Numenorean descendants, the Men of Gondor being an example, eventually mixed with the middle who had shorter lives.

You have to think about the fact that he´s a numenorean, tho and a high-born at that. Stated in the book to resemble the ancient kings more then generations of men before him. While he definitely is suppossed to be dirty and battleworn, he still was, even by Tolkien, supposed to be rather good-looking, seeing as Tolkien himself described the Numenoreans and even more-so their kinfs as a tall and beautiful race.

I think Viggo Mortensen was the perfect cast. He is dirty and battleworn throughout the movies, he has the unwashed look and the long, filthy hair. And behind that, he is a beautiful man. Exactly like he´s supposed to be. And concerning the comment of gamerase below, yes, he is old, bot not for his race. If you break his age down to human years, he´d be in his early 40ies...

Jackson definitely knew his stuff when he casted the actors. Thus he managed to find a perfect cast that fits Tolkiens descriptions AND the fantasy of all the girls.

Tolkien was involved in the LOTR casting choices? Tell me more.
User avatar #55 to #9 - mitchr (10/11/2013) [-]
The thing that's cool about Peter Jackson is that he wasn't in it for the money, he just wanted to make a damn good movie. He thinks of directing as a hobby. That is why the movies are so good. He didn't sell out or compromise. He wanted to do what he found fun, which just so happens to be making movies.
Did a damn fine job, too.
