At work today I realised that "offensive" is just a perspective.
Like, me being rude is down to you.

I was on the drive through at McDonalds, taking orders and payments at the same time cos I'm good at my job. Suddenly, man at the window in front of me needs to change his order, while I'm taking an order on the headset. So I mute my mic, change his order, and then switch my attention back to the other customer to apologise for the delay and continue. She says "oh, thats okay! So yeah I'll also like to have..." and she goes on her merry way.

A few days later, the same thing happens. I mute the microphone, and three seconds later the woman on the ordering point is shouting at me. "hello? HELLO? Oh my GOD hello? You can't be SERIOUS right now, is he just ignoring me?!?"
So I finish up the changes at my window right now, and go back to the headset to apologise to the woman. I even explain to her that I'm doing two jobs right now and can't focus on two things at once, but nope, she wont have it. She comes to the window, tells my manager, and now I have it written down in the records that I was rude to a customer. Did I mention that she'd actually finished her order already?

And yeah, I guess I am possibly the most biased person to gain evidence from, but look at it. What really changed? What possible variables are there? Cos the time difference was nearly exactly the same. The only other thing that could've changed is the person's perspective. She's the one that took that situation and turned it into something that's offensive.

m8 my store has two drive through lanes.
Most of the time, we have one person per lane. When it's really busy, its like, one person for one lane, one person for the other, and another taking payment at the window.

Past like, 10pm, I do all three jobs.

One of our drive through speakers is so loud that I can actually hear it in the other headset like an echo. Unfortunately, this has meant that I've said "Hi can I take your order" to one person, both lanes have started giving me their order, and then the person at the window has said they need to add something.
Was very fun 10/10 would do again.

Something similar happened to me recently like this. I'm a manager at a sonic and as I was closing the store two customers drove up about 3 mins before close and ordered wings which take about 8 mins to cook and prepare fully. It was past the time the we needed to be open so usually we would turn the lights off but we waited because there were people waiting outside, It'd be rude right? So we left them on.

After their food was done my cook had the grill off and most fryers down, when this asshat of an old guy came in the drive thru. I answered and apologized saying we were closed, he replied by starting to order. I repeated saying sorry, but we are closed. He snaps and says "then why are your lights still on??" I explained we were waiting to finish an order for customers who came before we were technically closed. Then he just says "I want a milkshake" so I obliged, they aren't so hard to make so I was polite and went through with it.

When I was done I came to the window and told him his total and he gave me the money, but when i gave him his change he snatched it from me with a grumpy look. I gave him his shake and he snatched that as well and said with a grimace "You should turn off your lights when you close" And I'm just sitting there like what the hell I told you what happened, you grumpy twat.

I understand that you may be hungry or that you just may have wanted a shake, but seriously? Who needs a shake at 12am, what were you doing old sir that you needed a shake that badly at 12am.

That's exactly it, and why what people find "offensive" cannot be trusted, because even if they're being offended on behalf of another person, it is them who feels that what you said SHOULD be offensive.

The problem is interpretation. Regardless of what you said or why, they believed what you had done to be offensive, and thus, were offended. If this does nothing, I hope it provides you with comfort knowing it is them that actually want to be offended.

To be fair, McDonalds should staff better. How many customers does each drive through get a day?

But that's no excuse to be an asshole. The right person would call MCDHQ and compliment you on handling the overload, and advise better staffing, maybe run by you.

I also think ****** people are generational. People born in the 50s, 60s, and 70s are especially **** in alot of cases. Those people raised on the "Customer is always right" even though they dont understand the phrase. It's not a permission slip to **** on people because you have a wallet. It means "we'll do whatever we can to keep your business, as long as it doesnt hinder ours".

When I was younger, I worked a retail job at an electronics store. Some bitch came in to return an RC car her son had driven into the pool. She had a protection plan. She demanded a full refund, plus a second car. I explained to her that wasnt in the terms, to which she spouted a ton of insults about how I had a dead end job, and didnt know how to treat customers. She wanted to speak to the manager, which I promptly got the manager from the back room.

My manager though was overworked, overstressed, and well outdone. We had to let a ton of people go the week before for theft, and it was essentially me, her, and one other person that worked on the 2 days I didnt. She spoke to her, apologized, and said she'd get me to apologize. When she came back, I told her I wouldnt do it, took off my uniform, and started to walk out on the job. My manager stopped me, went out to the floor, and told the customer to leave. That she would rrather lose a fraud of a customer (literally the words) then her only backing employee right now.

See, me leaving meant no one to work the floor, which meant a greater loss in business. They'll gladly put on a show to keep some cash when needed, but in the end, it's dollars to cents.

Side story, it was an electronics chain. My manager passed the camera image across the stores in the state advising them not to work with them. She was thrown out of 4 stores, and was told to "shop elsewhere" by the regional manager when she called in.

Customer is always right, until you're costing money instead of spending it.

I dunno if its the same in america, but here, we're supposed to have a certain amount of employees per profit we make.
I dunno how they do the maths, but it works out about 20% labour is the standard go-to staff amount. Too much and there's not enough to do, too little and everyone gets ****** .

My store has 15%.
We're running with a quarter less than we need. AND we're the busiest Mcdonalds in the area.
