He's really comfortable in his friendship, so he's refusing to let it evolve into anything more. Because subconsciously, he's afraid if he admits he likes her he'll ruin the friendship. That's how I read it, anyways. There's supporting evidence for this, like when his friends were discussing Tomo's . . . "attributes" and he smacked them around until they stopped, but absolutely refused to acknowledge that he had any feelings for her at all
