Do you have a white wall? Stare at a vibrant color for a while, then stare at the wall. You will see the inverse of that color on the wall, because your eye compensates for vibrancy, and continues to do so even after you're done looking at whatever it is compensating for. Same principle here.

Just learned about this in psych class. It's explained with Ewald Hering's theory of color vision called the opponent-process theory. Pretty much, each color has it's paired opponent color (red versus green, yellow versus blue, black versus white). Take red and green for example; by staring at a green square for an extended period, that green response trigger is tired out. So when we look at a white surface, we see it's paired color, red, as an afterimage
