Have you seen "Rise of the planet of the Apes"? granted, that's an extreme, but its things like that that testing on animals first is to protect against.
User avatar #17 to #16 - dabronydude (06/23/2014) [-]
i have not seen that in a long time but i thought that film was,
they did tests on monkeys, with are animals and they became super smart?
User avatar #18 to #17 - EnergizierAnon (06/23/2014) [-]
yes, but then they started doing tests on the monkeys with a more aggressive strain of whatever it was, and some guy accidentally breathed it in, and then spread it around involintarily.
User avatar #19 to #18 - dabronydude (06/23/2014) [-]
so it was a security fault?
they are still testing on animals but something went wrong.

but what's going to happen to the internet without autism?
#77 to #21 - anon (06/23/2014) [-]
I'd have to wager that much like how people on tumblr pretend to have OCD and split personality disorders and other mental illnesses to get attention,
other people on the internet will likely do the same with autism, and we'll hardly notice a difference.

As a Christian, I completely agree. Attempting to find proof of God is simply reducing him, and it suddenly makes him finite and tangible.

It's really interesting that you guys just agreed to believe the same kind of theory that has been told as "history" in the magnificent book "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" (chapter 6).

"The practical upshot of all this is that if you stick a Babel fish in your ear you can instantly understand anything in any form of language. The speech patterns you actually hear decode the brainwave matrix which has been fed into your mind by your Babel fish.
"Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindbogglingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as the final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God.
"The argument goes something like this: 'I refuse to prove that I exist,' says God, 'for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.'
"'But,' says Man, 'the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED.'
"'Oh dear,' says God, 'I hadn't thought of that,' and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.
"'Oh, that was easy,' says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing."

No, that's not what I believe. I don't think it's because faith is needed and blah blah blah. I think it's because when an infinite being enters a finite existence, we simply wouldn't understand it. It's like a 3D hand entering into a 2D world. It's just impossible to understand.

If we could understand God, then he wouldn't be infinite, he wouldn't be beyond our minds. I don't think God refuses to prove he exists, so much as that he knows we wouldn't understand him if we saw him here and now. Instead he leaves hints all around and gives us an idea of who he is, but is limited to our languages and senses.

Yeah, I see your point and I've heard it before (since many share the same belief as you, it's not that odd) but since I have another kind of... "belief", I guess you could call it (since it's belief, but it just doesn't have anything with religion to do (mainly))), but I own another kind of perspective on life and everything around it than you.
Thumbs up for the optimism, though! If anything, people should at least have that attitude to life like you do.

Oh, and sorry for the unfair assumption, I didn't really overthink my comment (which I maybe should've). But next time I will!

Well, it's quite simple. I put all that energy, hope, trust and belief that is more commonly focused and given to some superior (what oneself has conviced him/her is something/someone one can trust) to myself. Or rather, my "soul" (what a/one's soul is varies depends on every individuals own perspective) than myself.
I believe that I have no limit of life energy. Sure, it varies from time to time, but who doesn't feel down and wear heavy shoulders every now and then? Also, thanks to my optimistic with the (what I consider is, the) necessary amount of realism I own I live most of my days with a smile on my face, but express all the other negative emotions which I have "learned" to concentrate into categories whenever it's time for it or if I haven't expressed such emotions in a long time I do it in my special spot (it's a special place, it's a small hill just some kilometer from my house, where I can be all alone). May seem like a drastically overthought "solution", but to me it's really practical and it works really good. And hey, it's a solution, right?

I also believe that all the hope one is giving to whomever or whatever doesn't really matter, as long as all of that hope effects to wherever or whoever (even oneself) where it really was meant to be sent. Personally, I'm always open to do someone a gesture if it's needed and it's fair, but I often aim a great amount of hope (sidenote: there isn't really a limit to how much hope you could... hope, but it could be really exhausting to use it too much in a short period of time (the same goes for any other kind of psychological, emotional or mental effort that's been made)) to myself (a.k.a my soul) whenever I need it.

TL;DR: I don't believe there's a limit to non-physical efforts, but I believe that it should be something that one should take very seriously, since it's one's very own life force one is owning the command over. And that you should focus deeply and take care of it. It's one's will to live.

(Another sidenote: The reason I didn't mention religion all too much is because it really hasn't that much with it/me to do. And I don't think too much about it (I've been christian and I've studied religion, so it's not that I'm careless or not knowledged, but I just changed my mind to something that felt more right and fair to myself).
Also, I'm sorry if the grammar isn't all too correct every here and there, but it isn't my first language.

The "free will" one is stupid
All the study showed is that people make decisions before they're consciously aware of those decisions
#70 to #50 - IamWhoIam (06/23/2014) [-]
Most people would consider free will to be CONSCIOUSLY making the choice. If the choice is made before you consciously choose to is it still technically free will is what they're trying to decide.

User avatar #98 to #50 - silentfapper (06/23/2014) [-]
There are two sides, obviously, to this argument, and those are if the choices we make in life are pre-determined or if we consciously make these decisions. In the study that you mentioned, and the post mentioned, the conductor of the experiment would ask the participant to raise their arm, but by looking a the brain, they saw that the brain made the choice of which arm to raise before the person was even aware of the decision. How can a person make self-determined choices, make sense of the world, and even self-actualize when neuroscientific evidence seems to indicate that our brains are making decisions before we even realize it? But this brings up another question, if free will isn't real, what is the point of life if we are just robots who are pre-programmed to make choices that we have no control of?

Any new antibiotics should be tightly controlled. It should not be used in soap or hand sanitizer or food/water, and should be used for emergencies only. I don't care if you're scared of germs; you're only making them stronger with constant exposure. I don't care if you feel sick; if it's a minor disease, you'll have to deal with it; if it's a virus, there's nothing antibiotics can do for you.
Health isn't about never getting sick. It's being able to handle getting sick.
#65 to #58 - IamWhoIam (06/23/2014) [-]
Well, antivirals exist to help treat some viruses but can only be used if the actual virus is known, otherwise they will have no effect. Also yeah, **** hand sanitizer and **** . I got a super strong strain of the flu when I was really little and haven't gotten the flu since even when I've taken care of people with it. **** yeah acquired immunity.
User avatar #84 to #58 - abesimpson (06/23/2014) [-]
I haven't really heard of any soap or hand sanitizer with antiobiotics (basically because it would probably be illegal, dat **** gets absorbed through the skin, yo)

And if you meant to say desinfectants, well they are perfectly safe, bacteria won't gain resistance.

"Nyeh nyeh nyeh free will is an illusion" anybody with this kind of mindset is likely to become depressed and far less self guiding. Who gives a **** , those who believe in free will will tend to lead more fulfilling lives because they believe they can do anything!

exposure to stress modifying the epigenome of DNA has been known for quite a lot longer than a week ago. basically stress unravels your DNA so that it can be read and transcribed more properly and, in youth, prepare you for more stressful situations later in life. mother rats lick their baby rats to expose them to stress, which modifies their epigenome, and prepares them for stress later in life. it mostly works best with physical stress, I'm uncertain about it's affect with emotional stress.
User avatar #9 to #7 - lumberjackery (06/22/2014) [-]
forgot to mention telomeres anywhere in there. but essentially telomeres are what tighten and package your DNA and thats what is being modified by the stress signals to unravel your DNA more.

As a dental student I can just say that the post on reversing tooth decay is utter trash. By the time one would go to the dentist for a filling, the tooth is way too demineralised to be repaired by that. The tooth naturally repairs itself, its only when there's too much bacterial waste that the tooth cannot keep up with it. When you get a filling done its because the dentist had to remove the bacteria and debris from the cavity, leaving healthy tooth behind. If they didnt do that, the bacteria would spread and you would lose the whole tooth. If they removed the debris but never filled it, you would literally **** yourself from the pain. Their electronic treatment can eat **** and has next to no practicality in real life. They'll just use it so they can charge you more. Just brush your teeth for christs sake.

if you read into it you may begin to understand, it is not stating that its a proven fact it is just a suggestion, and if no-one made suggestions that go against what people like you think is right or wrong then we would still believe the earth was flat and that it was created in 7 days, do not get angry at that which you don't understand, try to begin to understand why the theory has come about, and if you believe it is right or wrong then good for you, but dont put other theories down because you're lacking in grey matter

oh and by the way how about you read the article which is so so poorly written and then read the comments on the article which pretty much say exactly the same thing i did and you will realize how retarded you are for calling me a dumbass and how i dont "begin to understand" what the article clams or is about

oh yeah that "research" helped us TREMENDOUSLY in "understanding how the human brain works"

okay im putting forward an idea
there are things that cannot and will never be explained (and probably shouldnt). not by us. not by out brains which cannot fathom the subject. considering this exact article, could you please care to enlighten me about the terms "free" and "will" and explain them to me? what exactly is the point of this article and what exactly did we learn from it that is based on solid evidence which led "scientists" to conclude that "free will is a background noise".
how about the big bang theory, we cannot begin to understand how or why the universe came about but we keep getting fed with ******** ideas like "there was something that we dont know where it came from and it exploded hur dur and thats where we came from"
im not a christiand but i do believe that there must be some higher force which controls most of what happens. i dont know what it is but the idea that there is god who created us and everything around us is much much more plausible (to me personally) than what we are being fed with nowadays (this is considering how the universe was born, and after having typed all of this i realize that i dont even know why im arguing with you when you obviously feel smarter than me)
