Ratatouille is one of the most beautiful and underrated Disney films out there.

I doubt its underrated. It's hailed by many as being one of the smartest animated films.

Yeah, I think this is one reason why Nintendo has a hard time selling units. Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong and Pokemon (although it isn't inherently Nintendo) are all very much similar to what they've always been and Nintendo needs some new IP an variety. I don't really think reinvigorating old franchises would help much either, although it might give an initial boost. I think they need new IP's altogether, new ideas, broaden up the types of games that arre on their systems both first party and third.
User avatar #8 to #3 - ThatsSoFunnyHeHe (02/06/2014) [-]
"Nintendo has a hard time selling units"
Nintendo has sold 200 million more consoles than Sony and like 500 million more than Microsoft. Sure the WiiU is selling horribly, but the 3DS is selling amazingly.
User avatar #109 to #8 - kombee (02/07/2014) [-]
Yeah, for one reason only. The games. I know the 3DS is a success, but it wasn't so before they actually good a variety of different games on their system. FE: Awakening is a perfect example of this. I know that it's and old franchise, but they've done so much new with it that it could practically be a whole new game altogether. And that's what Nintendo needs, new games.
User avatar #11 to #8 - pimpinboobnugget (02/06/2014) [-]
Everybody wanted Pokemon. Nintendo should make games we would like to play.
User avatar #14 to #3 - mutzaki (02/07/2014) [-]
I should start off by saying I'm a Nintendofag, and apart from slight PC gaming, I only buy Nintendo consoles.
The Wii U isn't exactly a flop, but it's doing very poorly compared with its predecessors. The only reason the Wii did so well was because it appealed a lot to the "extra casual" market, meaning parents and even grandparents. A lot of people bought them solely for Wii Fit and motion controlled sports games because parents thought it would get their kids skinny and be fun for the whole family.
The Wii U instead tried to compete directly with the Xbone and PS4 in the "hardcore" market, while not losing their established "normal casual" market. Even though the third party support is much more existent with the Wii U, it's still nowhere near its competitors. Developers don't want to spend extra time and money just to make their games work with the Wii U Gamepad, when Nintendo famously doesn't even have an established hardcore market. It's a catch 22 situation--the Wii U can't reach the hardcore market because devs won't to give it a chance to.

Generation 8 will be quite ****** for Nintendo, but they will manage juuuust fine due to the major success of the 3DS.
User avatar #21 to #14 - mayedh (02/07/2014) [-]
Your part of the youtube gaming community arnt you? Oh, I have to disagree with you. I think that this generation will be great for nintendo, but it wont really start looking up til holiday 2014 to early 2015, although e3 should bring some buzz.
User avatar #24 to #21 - mutzaki (02/07/2014) [-]
What do you mean? I don't create gaming content on YouTube, but I watch a lot of gaming videos.
I hope you're right. I just think the Wii U will be the least sold console out of the three, possibly by a lot. The PS4 has already outsold the Wii U, even though it came out a year later. I think the Xbone is catching up, too.
User avatar #27 to #24 - mayedh (02/07/2014) [-]
There's a group of people one youtube that go back and forth on gaming issues; you comment just sounded like you were familiar with it. Wii u is still on top in sells with 5.6 million consoles sold to date. Ps4 and xb1 aren't far behind though with 4.9 million and 3.4 million respectively. Wii u will be fine. 2014 it will get a library of must have exclusives. Plus nintendo has the richest back library of games in existence and they are working on bringing it to the virtual console and nintendo just announced ds games will also be avaliable on the wii u, and they are now leasing ips to third party developers, which should bring us more of our favorite nintendo games. That should drive sells and third party support along with it.
User avatar #29 to #27 - mutzaki (02/07/2014) [-]
Oh, I think the PS4 outsold the Wii U for a while, but those figures are probably a few months outdated.
I hope you're right.
User avatar #32 to #29 - mayedh (02/07/2014) [-]
The were updated yesterday on vgchartz.com. The only place I know of where the ps4 outsold wii u is europe, but it only took a few days, because no one bought it there. But ps4 will pass wii u later this month when sells start in japan. Xb1 will be in last for a while. Although it is the best seller in the states, it does poorly internationally. Wii u is a little harder to predict, but I think sales will increase in early June, because mario kart in May and e3. With china now allowing foreign gaming consoles for the first time, it makes it hard to guess, but I think it will go to wii u or ps4, with the edge to wii u. Either way wii u will be fine. Nintendo has the most money, legendary ips, resources, and some of the industries most skilled and experienced developers. They have a few cards up their sleeves if the going gets tough.

User avatar #25 to #23 - mutzaki (02/07/2014) [-]
I would actually like to see them bringing back the 2D sidescroller format. Wouldn't really work for the Wii U, but it would for the 3DS.
User avatar #102 to #25 - fuzzysixx ONLINE (02/07/2014) [-]
2D metroids are by far the best Nintendo games IMO. 3D ones are nice to, but I love the 2D ones.
User avatar #28 to #25 - meganinja (02/07/2014) [-]
I don't know I kinda liked the 3D immersion. I actually didn't like the 3rd Prime very much because you had allies. In the first one, your ship wrecks on a planet that once inhabited, is now filled with ruins. You witness the beauty of a planet left abandoned for decades, see how the animals adapted, the new course nature took. The game is you literally experiencing nature on a strange, uninhabited planet. You see the tormented ghosts of the past, the ruins of once great citadels, and the stories telling of the demise of the Chozo. And then you find the space pirates. Devious fiends taking advantage of it all. So you destroy their operations and avenge the Chozo.

And the second game is very similar, except this time there's still hope. You ARE the last ditch effort of a near extinct sentient race. You must single handedly fight off an alien invasion. In this game, instead of seeing the beauty of an untouched nature, you see the desolation of a once proud planet, torn to shreds by a phazon seed. What really moved me was the sanctuary fortress. Seeing the machines still doing what they were programmed to do, decades after their creators had all died. Truly a masterpiece.
User avatar #30 to #28 - mutzaki (02/07/2014) [-]
The Prime series just doesn't feel like Metroid to me. It's more like a spin-off series, that, while very enjoyable, shouldn't be the new...standard of the new series, in my opinion.
User avatar #53 to #30 - bagguhsleep (02/07/2014) [-]
You're right about the Prime series feeling really different but I really couldn't have imagined a better change in direction to it.
I felt like 1 and 2 (3, not so much, but enjoyable nonetheless) retained my favorite elements of the side-scrolling part of the franchise -- namely the sense of progression you make when you revisit an old area that had something you can't access before, exploration, and that lonely as **** feeling.
#39 to #30 - someoneforamoment (02/07/2014) [-]
paper mario is a spinoff if Mario bros.
Mario 3d is a spinoff of paper mario
3d zelda is a spinoff of 2d zelda

What's your point?
User avatar #111 to #39 - mutzaki (02/07/2014) [-]
My point is that I often prefer older formats of the games, and would like to see them keeping them up. With LoZ, they kept up the old format with A Link Between Worlds, which was great. With Mario, they kept up the old format with all the New Super Mario Bros. games.
I just hope they bring back the old Metroid format at some point.

Nintendo's old franchises are what's selling best. It's the new IPs that aren't selling well.
User avatar #107 to #31 - kombee (02/07/2014) [-]
I dunno dude. Nintendo doesn't have any new IP's to speak of, granted you're right that Pokemon, Mario and Zelda do sell relatively well. it's starting to decline though, and I think what has kept it alive for now was the tried and true formular (as in actually genuinely good gameplay) coupled with nostalgia. People are jumping of though, because of two main reasons. First of all they feel the consoles are limited (not necassarily in specs but just a closed system in general) even for consoles which are extremely limited in the first place, secondly they feel that Nintendo hasn't doe much new in terms of what really counts: the games. We need new different types of games on the WiiU/3DS for variety's sake. Variety and the overall library of good games on a console should be the number one priority to a console developer, it's the reason why the ps1 and 2 did so well.
#75 to #3 - johnthemate (02/07/2014) [-]
but what about the nostalgia? D:

User avatar #9 to #3 - gardex (02/06/2014) [-]
But they are making new IPs, people are just completely ignoring them.

Example: Wonderful 101, a Nintendo-owned IP that was loved by all five guys that played it.

Other new IPs: Pushmo, Dillon's Rolling Western, Nintendo Land, Sakura Samurai, Pandora's Tower and The Last Story. X is also upcoming for Wii U.

People just give them the blind eye, and then complain about every new Mario game(that still sell like crazy)
User avatar #12 to #9 - BmanX (02/06/2014) [-]
I think for most people, they want a new Nintendo-developed, AAA game. Most of those weren't actually developed by Nintendo. Hell, Last Story and Pandora's Tower weren't even published by them (in North America, at least). Pushmo and DRW are good, but they're 3DS-eShop exclusives, so they're a little harder to notice. People want a new IP that could be as big as Zelda or Mario that is actually developed by Nintendo.
User avatar #20 to #12 - gardex (02/07/2014) [-]
X matches those wishes, doesn't it?
Developed Monolith Soft(Which is a Nintendo-team) and published by Nintendo.
User avatar #22 to #20 - BmanX (02/07/2014) [-]
Nintendo-owned, yes. But I'm thinking most people want one that's made by one of Nintendo's in house development team.

Well totalbiscuit put wonderfull 101 in his top 10 list of best games of 2013, so that game may get a little popular now.
User avatar #108 to #9 - kombee (02/07/2014) [-]
Those are all very great, and the very thing Nintendo needs. But it's not at all enough, they need to do more games that are even more expansive and big in scope. More better games is what is needed. Variety is the key word. Do you know how many people love Wonderful 101? More third party support like that woud be awesome! (The game is done by Platinum btw, not Nintendo). And people has praised that game for it's innovation many times. Also, Nintendo has done an absolute poor job at advertising these games in my opinion

Improved graphics/ physics, more quests/missions/ w.e. they're called in non mmo's, and more variations for the Flood device, as well as some quick mini games and other changes would be amazing.

Super Mario 3D World - rehashed ******** from the 3DS title Super Mario 3D Land

LoZ Link Between Worlds - cashing in on the nostalgia that was Link to the Past, oh, along with the added benefit to turn into a chalk drawing done by a 3 year old for 'super new amazing gameplay'

these titles only get high scores because of the fan boys that over hype them, their pedigree, and their nostalgia from their respective IPs. by no means am i trying to put down anybodies favorite games, to each their own, but people defend/love these titles for 'being new and innovative' but **** on other games for the exact same reason.
#64 to #51 - theruse (02/07/2014) [-]
Actually it wasn't, it was WAY better than 3D Land, and had WAY more content.

Link Between Worlds was more than juat a cash - in, if you played the ******* game insted of being a stupid ass Phony or Micro$hit fanboy, you would know this.

You're just mad that Nintendo games are always creative and fun and getting well deserved high scores when your stupid copy and past First Person Shooters get bad scores.

>implying im any sort of fanboy

let me just point out i never said i was a fanboy. i never compared your precious Zelda to Call of Duty or Mario to Skyrim, i stated my opinion. i enjoyed LoZ and Mario as a kid, with majoras mask being one of my favorite nintendo games, Super Mario rpg being a close second and wind waker being third.

i enjoy these series, but there is little to no innovation with ANY of nintendos IPs as of late. they rerelease 'new' super mario bros. for every console, they've already rereleased super mario 3d land as 3D world w/ a cat suit, and i stand by my opinion in that LBW is just cashing in on nostalgia. hell, look at donkey kong country returns, before that the last dk game was DK Konga, and before that DK64, not counting those mario vs. dk games for the gba.

nintendo is just creating sequel upon sequel and doing nothing new with any of the games, just rehashed ******** over and over, if you enjoy that, that's great, but they don't deserve all this praise.
#63 to #46 - alainap (02/07/2014) [-]
Fire Emblem Awakening deserved that title IMO...I kinda feel the Zelda game was given GoT because it was just more new.

I honestly didn't find A Link Between Worlds all that impressive...though I did only rent it for a few days and I generally royally suck at some Zelda games, it just didn't seem as good as some of the previous titles. A real lack of direction, it felt like. I had a really hard time figuring out what to do in this one and I missed the set dungeon structure...

Shadow Dragon is probably the least fun one, mostly because it is so displeasing to look at. For me at least, just, the single most perfect game ever. I'm just gonna not talk now, because if I start I dunno if I'll be able to stop gushing about it. And tbh i don't wanna annoy anyone...

#93 to #91 - alainap (02/07/2014) [-]
In America it's just called Fire Emblem but I think in Japan it was actually like the 7th game or something...I had a hard time playing it because I was only able to find Sacred Stones first, my husband played the original. Both are good, I just grew up on the slightly better one. It's easier to maintain your items in Sacred Stones and the ending was...good.

Other than that I think the only other one we got was Shadow Dragon which I believe is the first game and another one remade for the DS. It looks like stupid little 3D clay models (bad ones) on a flat paper mat though.

although it is true that Nintendo tends to "onlly" bring out new games from old franchises, i have to say that these games appeal alot to me. For example mario 3D world, Fire emblem Awakening, Pokemon x/y, monster hunter, phoenix wright, link between worlds, professor layton etc...
while it is true that those games might only appeal to a relatively small number in the western world, they are all generally and objectivly good games.
Meanwhile, on the other side, many games nowadays are just old stuff packed into new clothes, just look at the fps genre, there are like 3 different types of ego shooter and inbetween these sub-genres, all the games feel relativly similiar.
For the record, i like western games as much as i like games from, let's say japan, i just think that many people tend to oversee what i just claimed

I doubt it'd end after that, and Heroes of the Storm is a mix of all three, I'm just saying it's a huge company who earns a lot of money, while stuff like Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo are good games and it's basically a part of gaming culture, but I just wonder when we'll see something NEW from them.

And no, so far the Diablo story is not done yet and Warcraft keeps getting along further with expansions although I don't know why, Warcraft 3 made me think a bit LOTR kind of setting but in WoW now we're getting closer and closer to be more reminiscent of Warhammer.

To be fair, you can say that on the next gen consoles and their numerous uses of Shooters

well i played ZombieU, an exclusive for WiiU, and i have to say its not bad. ya there could be improvements but it has jump scares and eerie environments, the only nintendo game to scare the **** out of me. i could see it being a new series if they didnt rush like they did for the first one so it would get on the WiiU launch date
