Well normally the look all sour and proper but the fact that these two looked like they love each other so much just humanises the past a bit more

We all assumed they were all a bunch of angry people in sepia tone. But they were actually just like us... It's weird but I never thought of our ancestors as normal.

Thats not the problem. The problem is that the actual taking of the photo took an hour. See the comments below for more details.

I read it, I don't understand though. What's the difference between exposure and taking a photo?
User avatar #16 to #15 - bbboy (05/14/2014) [-]
exposure is when the old fashion cameras would put the photo on the paper.
User avatar #20 to #16 - mastersaturday (05/14/2014) [-]
Oooookay, and what exactly constitutes taking the photo then? You're saying it takes a 3 second exposure, but it takes 60 minutes to take a photo? Aren't those two the exact same thing?

Not really. I believe the term. "Taking the photo" came from when the photo was ready and you actually took it from the photographer
User avatar #84 to #22 - mastersaturday (05/15/2014) [-]
Okay, but does that require you constantly smiling?

Are you serious? Maybe it feels awkward, but it's not difficult to just keep the smile up for those three seconds. I get that they would start to giggle and stuff sometimes, but it's not so difficult that they have to look completely neutral instead of smiling, it would just take a few extra takes.

See, this was what always made me question historical photos. Most photos required time to be taken, and the cameraman would take the lens cap off, hold it and then put it back on and that was a photo. I don't believe half of the in the moment photos.
User avatar #75 - pickaxe ONLINE (05/15/2014) [-]
that's kinda adorable...

Just a fun little tidbit, since earlier cameras used exposures much longer, ranging up to an hour, models would be strapped into chairs that looked like torture devices that held their body and head completely still.
#52 to #50 - fierce (05/14/2014) [-]
Another fun tidbit, photos were extremely expensive. So a lot of the time family portraits were done after someone died. The deceased was dressed up and propped to look alive. They had contraception to keep the body standing, or used other family members as a base. Sometimes even eyes were painted onto the eyelids. You can usually tell who is dead because they don't move and therefore are the clearest subject.

Also, dead people today in photographs don't get read eye. Red eye is caused by a reflection of the blood vessels and as dead people have no blood flow they have no possibility of red eye.

Picture related, the girl between the parents is dead.

Wait, why would it be cheaper for them if she was dead? Less people per picture?
User avatar #68 to #62 - somethingpants (05/15/2014) [-]
Probably a "special occasion" sort of deal. Nowadays we take pictures all willy nilly, but back then you only got them if you had money to spare. We don't really understand how easy it is to forget what someone looks like now since we have so many pictures of most of the people around us, but it isn't hard. They probably took it so they had at least one family portrait together since their daughter was dead, and therefor wouldn't be sustainable to take one later.
User avatar #69 to #68 - elmarcocfc (05/15/2014) [-]
Ah that makes sense. Thanks man.

My favorite is the fact that Victorian porn and funny Victorian photos of people playing around exist. And you have to imagine how long they held those poses to get the photo taken.

It annoys me when history gets recorded completely seriously. They used to laugh as well, and weren't much different from us. Its only time that separates us
#90 to #89 - anon (05/15/2014) [-]
No, laughing was seen as loss of controll and was therefore sunned as it often linked people to mental problems.

A Victorian method of remembering loved ones was to have their photo taken after they were dead, but as a family portrait with the rest of the family. The creepy thing about these photos is that the living family were always a little blurred from movement but the dead member is crystal clear.
