Alright god damnit you got me. I'm actually going to watch this movie now, funny thing is i wanted to watch it when it came out i just never got around to it.
It was pretty good... the ending was a little abrupt and i'm not 100% sure i agree with the message it's trying to convey but all in all it was a good movie. I can't help but feel like not everybody is the kind of person who responds to that kind of motivation by actually getting motivated. Some people crack under pressure and some just cave in, although i understand that he's saying that a truly great musician wouldn't ever give up, the fact is you'll do a lot more good by encouraging people than you will by beating them in hopes that they fight back.
I would argue it's not really trying to convey any message, or at least not the one you're thinking of. I think the best thing the movie does is force people to ask the question; was he justified in his actions?
For the kid at least, i think he probably considered it worth it, but on the whole the results of the guys teaching style weren't worth it, it's like using nukes to mine for diamonds.
I can't help feeling like, for anyone who just wanted to play music because they loved music, he would be the worst. His style would suck all the life and fun out of it until you hated something that used to bring you joy. Some people don't want to be the best, they just want to get better at something they enjoy.
True. Although some people don't have realistic expectations of what being the best entails, and on top of that the guy literally never gives even the slightest indication of praise.
I'm not gonna try and ******** and say you'd get that good at something without a teacher or something that wasn't always pushing you to be better, but some people need to be told at least that they're improving every once in a while so they don't lose hope. Obviously he's a rather extreme example and i doubt any teacher in real life would be quite that sadistic but it is an interesting debate (and one i don't think we'll be able to answer here) as far as how to encourage a person, with either "Not good enough!" or "You could do better"
I watched it, got super inspired to be, if not the worlds greates, but at least to strive. to set higher standards for my bassplay.
Showed it to my guitarist, not ******* change.
very frustrating.
I know exactly how you feel. The movie really inspired me by showing me how much harder I have to work and how **** I still am.
Showed it to my drummer, tried to get him into it, but he's a big baby so it actually uninspired him. (Guess he's not willing to put it what's required.)
