Hey so some of you may be here because you received an alert saying "Your friend joshlol uploaded new content"

A change was made on FJ today to set that alert to default, but I know a few of you will find it irritating to be spammed by notifications whenever I decide to post some content (I have about 5500 FJ friends and notice people unfriending me now)

so if you wish to disable those alerts you can do so by clicking Settings up top, and then going to the "Alerts settings" tab and unchecking the box that says "Receive alerts when friend added new content"

Also I posted this content like 3 months ago but uploaded it as future content by mistake and forgot about it, oops

I've thought about something similar to this, what if you through some method unbeknownst to you, you became immortal, you live your life normally until after a certain point you realize you've outlived the normal human being by a discernible amount of time, you watch as everyone around you withers and dies like a beautiful flower, only to realize that you are bitterly alone no friends, no family, no one, you find someone to love even though you know you will outlive them, you do so anyways just to feel again, you raise a family you watch them all grow up, and eventually the time comes, you watch as the generations pass of your family until they become intertwined with the rest of humanity to the point that you don't recognize them as family any more, you repeat this cycle, until you've had enough, you curse this existence, you sum up the courage to end yourself, only to find out that no matter what you do, you just re-materialize back into yourself, you cry in agony as you try to find a purpose, wander aimlessly, explore the galaxy, meet new creatures and races, after many millennia, your back again where you started, decide to explore the last unknown in the known galaxy, a black hole, wonder which would win, your ability to materialize or the black holes ability to dematerialize, you travel into the great abyss, only to realize that you have set off a chain reaction wiping out everything in known existence, everything except your conscience, in time in this great void you figure out how to create entire universes in the blink of an eye, after a while you decide to try to recreate earth just like when you thought you where mortal, you attempt to create creatures with their own inherent will, only to realize after several failed attempts, that you cannot recreate the civilization you once called home, you give up and live vicariously through their happiness and sorrows of these creatures, suddenly after many generations have passed, you see someone, who is nothing special, yet every fiber of the creatures being reminds you of yourself, as that creature is listening to a familiar piece of music, you relapse into a vivid moment of nostalgia, suddenly you realize, that you are being absorbed into this one being, unbeknownst to itself, only to realize, in all your wisdom that it's been in one unfathomably large cycle, you smile as you fade into nothingness.

I don't know if I have any discernible ability as a writer, what I know I have is the ability to think deeply and profoundly, since I've taken several bitter states in my life and poured them into my thinking, though there is not much money to be made of this single trait. I'm currently a middle aged, senior engineering student, anything else is just a hobby. I named the piece "an Ode to joshlol" since it's only fair I name it after the event's that caused me to write it down, hope you like it bud.

Honestly I consider that to be a happy ending.
You got to see everything continue and end, and nothing else really matters when you die.

I've been going to existential panic attacks almost daily for the past 8 years.
I've gained some insight from them; I'll share it with you.

Life is pretty meaningless, sortof like a dream. Like a dream, it is a temporary experience in which you are thrown into an unusual world where things actually exist, you meet a wonderful assortment of characters, and and you choose to follow the story without questioning it. You do things that you like, you make generalizations, you try to construct an inner universe in yourself by recognizing patterns in order to make the world outside of you more predictable and "under control". Many of these attempts fail.
When the dream is over, it is gone without a trace. All of your friends, family, possessions, and the consequences and aftermath of everything that you've done cease to be.
The world around you continues without you, but the world that you've made for yourself
which includes your friends, family, and everything about the world that made sense to you, instantly vanishes.

But it's not all so bad. We're all sharing this dream after all. Hell, it should be a never-ending festival. For an infinite number of years, we never existed. From an infinite number of atomic and chemical possibilities, you happened to be made of the right stuff in order to live. From an infinite range of possibilities, your parents chose each-other to make you. From over 40 million sperm, you were the only one that succeeded. From a 30% chance of miscarriage, you came out just fine.

You are very lucky, and there were no Godly
or otherworldly forces involved in aiding your existence.

Life is a dream worth holding dearly, despite its temporary influence.
The experiences you gain are what made this experience worthwhile, even if the memories are irrelevant to your existence. Even suffering is a reminder that you have the ability to care about your life and that you believe that you can do something more with it. That feeling could easily turn into aspiration, all that it needs is a little push.

Despite all of this, I still can't come to peace with my own death.
I like existing, I like you. I like that random stranger. It doesn't matter if all that we want is to be happy. People do horrible things because they want to be happy, and unfortunately.. people make the assumption that defeating an enemy will make them happy. Sometimes the enemy isn't even there, so they find themselves overthinking things and accidentally making enemies out of average everyday people.

People become scared of being unable to be happy. Why else would people be willing to kill others and die themselves for the sake of "eternal life" or living happily with their fellow deceased? It's a misguided quest for happiness, and often times people who walk down this path are non-negotiable. Sometimes a difficult choice of life and death has to be made at that point in order to prevent further harm to anyone else.

So why not do what makes you happy? Why waste time on people that make you upset on the internet? Why bother talking to people who don't want to understand you?
Life is a temporary dream, and whether it becomes a dream or a nightmare is up to you.
You may never know if an accident, disease, or dangerous animal comes around to interrupt your life.

Don't worry about reproducing, the world is overpopulated, and will continue to be for the next 40 years even if everyone simultaneously stopped having sex right now. Don't worry about an expensive house, when you could have a small house and a boat.
Be nice to people, they're your colleagues in existence. We are bound by the same fate of life and dead, regardless of species. Enjoy what we have.

Leave nothing unfinished.
Nothing undone.
No thirst unquenhed.
No dream undreamed.
Die satisfied.

An eternity after a fulfilled purpose would be hell.
User avatar #112 to #106 - fornowjr (12/22/2015) [-]
Truer words have never been heard. I agree with everything you said save for life being a dream . I find life to be the most fantastic thing on this planet because of the sole reason in which it was all random. It just happened. This makes the beauty of this world even more astonishing to me. The people I see walking around in the mall, the park, the women I fall in love with and the brothers I create bonds with makes life that more enjoyable.

I know it's meaningless, it always has been and always will be. But it doesn't mean their isn't anything to live for. Reality is my intoxication. The anger portrayed by men, as well as the love that are exalted amongst them. Humanity will always be my muse. They are deceitful, amorous, sinister, and compelling, and I wouldn't want it any other way. The history created by them is never ending and will never end.

I'm digressing, but I feel that you, tito, are a wise man or woman. You never know who is behind the username. You might even be a dog. . Possibly popping a joint here and then and thinking of the world around you and how it connects regardless of ideologies and superstition.

As with death, I suppose my fascination with it even as a child has made it much easier for me to cope with. I don't like it, but I respect it. It takes everyone in the end, one way or another. Even the Sun Praise his shine. will one day fall to the embrace of him, taking Earth along.

It's a terrifying ride, but one I am glad to be part of.

My friend, I am glad there are people like you in the world. You aren't the first I have met or read in this case and you certainly will not be the last. I hope you have a difficult life. That's the only way to enjoy it.

Death is not part of life?
User avatar #146 to #145 - totallytito ONLINE (12/22/2015) [-]
It is corruption and disruption, and atrophy.
The body is missing a component that regenerates telomeres.
Evolution is simply not addressing it because we are living long enough to reproduce.

Mechanical failure(physical damage) will still be possible,
however internally the body is designed for longevity.
User avatar #147 to #146 - fornowjr (12/22/2015) [-]
Completely wrong, death is a necessity for the survival of species. If there are too many of the same species in one area, overpopulation occurs. When overpopulation occurs, resources dwindle, diseases run rampant, and aggressive behaviors are put into action to fight for resources.

Everything withers and everything dies. Stars are a perfect example. For life to be made, death must come first we are all effectively dead star dust . It's a cycle present since the beginning of the universe.
User avatar #148 to #147 - totallytito ONLINE (12/22/2015) [-]
Overpopulation is already happening with death.
It ultimately failed.
User avatar #149 to #148 - fornowjr (12/22/2015) [-]
Not sure I understand.
User avatar #150 to #149 - totallytito ONLINE (12/22/2015) [-]
China's overpopulated, the US is almost overpopulated, Europe is overpopulated.
Animal populations among rodents are overpopulating, even ants are getting a little too frisky.

The world is overpopulated, even with human intervention.
Death failed to maintain the balance. Migration to the stars is the only way for multicellular life to continue.
User avatar #151 to #150 - fornowjr (12/22/2015) [-]
Agreed, we have manage only to prolong life through technological and medicinal means. But that doesn't take the fact away that death is part of our natural cycle and sooner or later, it will come. Will it come by a drunk driver or by simple old age, no-one can be sure, but it is integrated within us. This natural cycle ranges from the earth we stand onto the void above, one day it will soon perish.

It's unavoidable.
User avatar #156 to #151 - totallytito ONLINE (12/22/2015) [-]
Except, if it is not part of the design, it is not part of any "cycle".
It's not puberty.
User avatar #158 to #156 - fornowjr (12/22/2015) [-]
How then, if it has been occurring since the inception of time, not part of a cycle? What makes death so unpure that it doesn't fit your way of how life should be? Why then, if stars, the ultimate creators of life, susceptible to fall in the end?

Death came first and out of death came life. In the end, everything will return to what it once was; nothing. I don't like this anymore than you do, but it's the reality of life.
User avatar #160 to #158 - totallytito ONLINE (12/22/2015) [-]
Nothingness doesn't exist either,
it is equilibrium.

The biological form is designed with nano technology purposefully made to build and sustain. It is unable to do so because it lacks a component that was not beneficial to reproduction, therefore this final component has to be added artificially to fight off an artificial event that causes the disruption of function.

That component is telomere supplements.
Stem cells are the easiest way to apply it.
User avatar #161 to #160 - fornowjr (12/22/2015) [-]
That will be a terrifying world, because you know who will get exclusive access to that technology. This will to find the elixir of everlasting life will not benefit everyone, only a few.

Life and death are synonymous, tito. Sooner or later, he will come. Better to shake his hand in agreement rather than live the rest of your life watching your back.

Anyways, I have something to do, if you have anything else you want to add, put it up, but I won't respond for a while. It was a great debate my friend.

With the last of humanity washed from the Earth, it seems that all that we had done was healed over the millenia in which we were absent. As the music drifted away, the sound of the ocean lapping towards my now prone body. I thought to myself, as I have done for many years after my long sleep. I dreamed of my family, their lives and the ones of those I left behind in the time that Earth has forgotten.

The bones of our once great civilization lay in ruins, reclaimed by nature. Our terrible toxins we pumped into the world cleansed over time. It is in my final moments that I wish I could have been around to enjoy this music longer. The music that will be the last any human has ever heard.
