I just don't like it when people on the internet call other people a sir, just because they are a bit polite.

S-Sorry sir.

So ... it upsets you ... when people use polite terminology, although admittedly exaggerated or perhaps misused ... to address someone who wasn't being an asshole?
User avatar #159 to #157 - appleisland (10/12/2013) [-]
You can put it that way, yes. But mostly because it is beeing misused.

I'd say you'd be extremely hard pressed to find any word that currently means the exact same thing as it's original intention.

He obviously didn't use the word sir to be formal or to address a particular title, because in current times the definition of sir has been expanded. Technically then, it is not misused in this situation. Only in the first instances when the new definition was not yet common knowledge.

For instance, the word tom boy originally meant a rude or boisterous boy. But that doesn't mean someone is misusing it when they refer to me as a tomboy because I am a girl who plays sports and so on.

Maybe, but I just find it annoying.
