The thing is $1.6 billion of that is Facebook shares. Do you really want facebook shares. You also can't sell them all of that in one go. The end result is that you have to sell them over time and facebook will most likely have gone bankrupt before you can sell that much

Well, Notch started out as a pretty cool guy. He used to ask for suggestions from 4chan, but then moved onto reddit. Now, while that might seem like an initial smart move, there are a few major differences on 4chan as compared to reddit: 4chan has no "upvote" system, and you can not accumulate any sort of points based on your reputation. Reddit however has that, which means people take great care not to post controversial or offensive statements that might hurt someone. Just in case it might ruin their reputation.

Granted, FunnyJunk also has some similar system, however FunnyJunk is forgiven for the fact that FunnyJunk predominantly is a "funny pictures site" - any discussion is just an added bonus.

The problem with that system is that people then find it much harder to criticise or be honest; if you say your honest controversial opinion - you get "down voted". So this caused Notch to get surrounded by "Yes Men" who dared not shoot down his retarded ideas (as opposed to 4chan, where any retarded idea would be met with a wall of text of insults).

The many "yes men" inflated Notch's ego, and he started thinking that he was hot **** , when he had just been really, REALLY ******* lucky since MeinKraft was a clone of a pre-existing, but lesser known, game.

Soon enough MeinKraft went viral, and Notch could rake in the money with no effort. Of course he promised specific content in much needed areas, but this was often down-prioritised due to the community demanding other more useless **** . The community grew cancerous - since the whole "yes man" mentality carried over from reddit.

"But hey, at least Notch kept his promises, I mean there might be a reason not to add the stuff he promised to add."
Well yeah, except one thing. At one point Notch promised that if you brought MeinKraft while in the alpha, you'd get all versions of it for free. A while later, MeinKraft 360 was released, and a /v/irgin contacted Notch regarding him wanting his free MeinKraft 360 game...
User avatar #215 to #214 - caffeinecommissar (03/27/2014) [-]
Notch pretty much told him to go choke on a thousand dicks. Which - considering the internet lingo - isn't that bad. Except, Notch was now breaking Swedish law (Notch is from Sweden, which is an even bigger insult to Sweden than Social Justice Warriors). But nothing was ever done about it, since the community would shut up any dissident voices, Notch deleted the blog post that said the thing about free-forever (but the splash text remains AFAIKAGAF) and said something like "No no no, MeinKraft 360 is an entirely different game."

Well **** me too. Retarded suggestions kept coming in from the retarded community, Notch started planning the MineCon, a documentary was made about the game. Then he invested what seems to have been a metric **** tonne of money into an overly fancy office, some Attention Whore from YouTube got a job as "Director of Fun" (which anyone with more than half a braincell would call 'HR' (Human Resources)). At some point Notch's wife left him after a year and a day, the bare minimum of time you can be married in Sweden before filing for a divorce. The MeinKraft community insists that she just did it for the money, but rumour has it that she left Notch for the same reason that Attention Whore got a job.

"Oh Caffeine Commissar, with your steaming pile of useless knowledge, what was that?"

Ever heard of Bill Clinton? Yeah, something like that. Apparently Notch's wife found him shagging the Attention Whore and left him, while Notch promised the Attention Whore a job. Suddenly "Director of Fun" seems less like "HR" and more like "Shag-bag".

Notch then withdrew from development to focus on other Mojang games, leaving the developement with Jeb_. Surely that could not go wrong?...
User avatar #216 to #215 - caffeinecommissar (03/27/2014) [-]
Shortly after that I had to contact Mojang regarding an interview (a different time, I was working for a small magazine) but Notch simply didn't reply to my mails, so once Jeb took over development, I began contacting him. He responded immediately and while the interview never entered print, he actually did his best to answer the questions despite only talking about technical stuff and not Mojang's work ethics.

Surely Jeb could do no ******* wrong.

Well he ******* could, most of the updates are just rehashed stuff already available through mods. The infamous Mod API is now delayed with TWO YEARS (in the interview Jeb estimated the finished date to be March... 2012.)

Notch has moved on to different ****** games, which unsurprisingly seems to have the same starting point as MeinKraft: Taking something unoriginal and copy to hell and back.

The only two positive things I can say about Notch at this point is:
1. He has done an excellent job using his luck to get far in life.
2. He ditched that God-damned fedora before euphoria became a thing.

Just playing Devil's advocate here.

Being bought by facebook means the rift gets a ton more funds, and they're being allowed to operate independently. True it has implications that facebook will take control, but for now just means that the rift gets developed faster and better.
#15 to #14 - Hightower (03/26/2014) [-]
It also means those funds will go to developing ******* Farmville VR and other ******** facebook games. On it's own Oculus was a good idea with a ton of potential, now that it's under facebooks control, everything developed for it will be for social games. If I wanted to be social while I game, I probably wouldn't be in a ******* VR headset...
User avatar #46 to #15 - fauxshores (03/26/2014) [-]
This is the most ignorant comment.

Facebook wont push just Farmville and **** . They both (OR and Facebook) have expressed how they want to use the funds to bring in new Dev teams to work on stuff specifically for the platform. You guys are all insane for thinking this is such a bad deal.
#224 to #46 - Hightower (03/27/2014) [-]
Zuck said they would be pushing social games.
"Oculus has the chance to create the most social platform ever, and change the way we work, play and communicate."

And Oculus is all about social experiences now...
"We believe virtual reality will be heavily defined by social experiences that connect people in magical, new ways"

On a positive note, Zuck addressed some of these concerns...
"The Rift is highly anticipated by the gaming community, and there's a lot of interest from developers in building for this platform. We're going to focus on helping Oculus build out their product and develop partnerships to support more games. Oculus will continue operating independently within Facebook to achieve this."

So it might not be a total loss...

It's just like all the people that flipped **** over Disney buying out LucasArts, saying that they're just going to turn everything Star Wars into a musical for little kids.

I mean as far as I know, there are a ******* ton of people who already believe Star Wars was "ruined" at episodes 1-3, so I have no idea how they expect Disney to ruin it when according to their opinion, Lucas ruined it already.

While I think 4-6 were definitely better, I still enjoyed 1-3

I can remember going to see Return of the Jedi in the theater when it first came out. The excitement was palpable. Going to Ep I was almost the same, but the feeling when leaving was completely different. Almost disappointment, with a small amount of hope because there were two more coming.
Compared to the original trilogy, looked at separately, and not part of a saga, the prequels failed in major ways. The rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker was something some of us looked forward to for almost 20 years, and we were treated to a lame ass love story, and emo kid with trust issues, and a convoluted plot that took an entire extra movie and cartoon series to explain.
My hope is Disney is good for the Star Wars universe. Look at what they did with Marvel...

honestly, i am genuinely worried aswell that they are going to **** it up. But one thing i know for ABSOLUTE certainty, is that they are going to release a "ball cam" that will give off a live feed panorama, and i believe that will be awesome. What ever they do later is up to them.
