It's kpop. K as in korean pop.
The music is crap, if you see any of those short clips of some girl with multiple plastic surgeries even without music, you've basically seen all that's remotely interesting to it.
Why is not more spread? Koreans see it as Americans see those twerking asses stuffed with implants, and they try to keep it down to not make themselves look bad.

cheeseboyofdoom (08/12/2015) [-] K-pop is basically a cultural export, and part of the tourism industry. They are not very popular at all in Korea. Think about all the weebs that go to Japan because they like anime, same thing basically. The government is the reason why k-pop is so huge.

false. they are highly popular in korea, especially with the younger generations. you have regular singers and then you have idols (kpop). both are highly respected and popular. girl groups usually attract male fans and male groups attract female fans. you could find fans up to their 40s who like kpop. plus, kpop is usually interpreted as a label rather than a genre because you'll find groups that are under "kpop" but create various different styles of music like ballads, rap, edm etc.

the music isn't "crap", you probably just haven't heard of any good songs. they put in way more effort than some of the artists here. they require large amounts of training both for vocals and dancing to be able to debut and the industry is very competitive. the unpopular groups that can't sing/dance and only have visuals are the ones you see here. they basically rely on the "sex sells" concept. there are plenty of other good groups. PSY has silly videos which are meant to be comedic and not to be taken seriously as music. examples: VIXX is a great group, watch their live performances. Apink is also a good girl group. its very difficult to sing live while dancing.
