I think with all the correlation bashing (not entirely uncalled for) going on in the comments it is worth noting that correlations can still be a useful tool when measuring trends which can lead to more focused experimentation and analysis which could prove a causal link. as with everything the key is responsible usage and proper context.

these are very skewered numbers, as you're chosing what ratio both of the variables are, on both of the numbers.
using different rates on the variables to make them match up
which basically can make any upward-going line match with any other upward going line, even if one was going up by 50 per day, and the other by 1 per decade.
