Think of the technology that would be created. Surely it couldn't all be used for torture.

I'm sure if the machines managed to keep a disembodied head alive in a ball, they'd have figured out a way to make sure you had to live through every second of the torture.

The left is Physical pain. The right is Psychological. They don't complete each other.

For those of you saying "but why": It's an artists representation showing that some people have immense pain or deeply personal problems (worst thing they can imagine) and the soundproof orb represents their inability to share this with whomever they wish. 80-90 years is how long they'll live regretting/coping with this/these issues.

That's some depressing **** right there, the only one to have given me the experience of sitting there after reading a story and just staring into nothing for ages because it left me in such a ****** mood. 9/10 would recommend, and if you aren't into reading there is a game.

Here's a PDF of it for anyone who wants to read the story:
users.pop.umn.edu/~matt0350/images/forumcrap/october/scream.pdf
It's a short story; only about 10 pages long but those ten pages are very worth the read.
There's a fun old game that's more or less the sequel to the story under the same name.

Maybe it just a metaphor for humans because humans, or at least kids, like to catch insects and torture them and laugh at them (remember the post where multiple flies glued into a stick plane so when they tried to fly, it looks like a ******* Boeing?)

I heard a theory about this comic once.
This is a world where people created sentient machines whose only purpose was to make human fantasies come true. One of those fantasies was religion and therefore hell, this is the best approximation that the machines could come up with for a hellish existence.
Not sure if that's what the artist actually had in mind, just something I heard once when this was posted before.
