He spent 18 years in prison and his wife cheated on him and in prison he wasn't tortured yeah he probably got beaten every now n then but not a massive thing, he and his wife came to a mutual agreement that they didn't love each other anymore also she cheated on him. Get yo facts straight.

yeah, I'm pretty sure the main reason for their divorce was the fact that she was still affiliated with the group that killed innocent people, he sought to distance himself from the group after his imprisonment. Before he went to prison he was, in fact, co-founder of the communist militant group Umkhonto we Sizwe which organised various bombings that killed innocent people as well as a landmine campaign that went on for 2 years and routine tortures and executions. However during his time in prison he realised that was not the way to fight the injustices of apartheid, divorced his wife, and went on to be the inspirational man he is remembered as today.

27 years in prison, I'd never expect my wife, were I married, to stay faithful to me for that long.

Hell, if I went to prison for more than a year I wouldn't ask my girlfriend to stay faithful.

Sex is after all a rather big part of life, and I couldn't ask a woman I love to abstain from it for my selfish desires.

People make way too big deal about sex anyway. All because of christianity's values; mainly the "sanctity" of marriage. Nowadays we have contraceptions and condoms that prevent diseases from spreading, so no use for all that "only have sex with one person in your whole life" -nonsense.

Back in good ol' days, the Romans had it right: Make love to men and breed with women.

Taking the freedom of speech and isolating a person is also torture. Especially when it's for 18 years. Also he was forced to do hard work in the quarry.

It seems you don't even have your facts straight. He was in prison a total of 27 years, the "18 years" was just at Robben Prison where after those 18 years he was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison for around 6 years then to Victor Verster Prison for the rest of his sentence.
User avatar #43 to #2 - cryingchicken (12/09/2013) [-]

Well, he spent 27 years in total in prison, 18 of which were on Robben Island.

He still loved his wife..he admitted that many times! His ex-wife lived at his house with his new wife and so did his kids from both marriages!

Nelson Mandella couldn't live with the things his wife did for his cause when he was in prison. She allowed people to be set on fire and murdered in the streets for Nelson's cause. Nelson was always a peaceful protester and he couldn't stay in a marriage with a woman that ruined his name.

...and yes he did spend 27 years in prison, he has admitted it was the toughest part of his life and it tested his humanity and his faith, so if you class that a "not a massive thing" then sure...

User avatar #35 to #25 - dumdumduu (12/09/2013) [-]
Nelson himself did similar things before he went to prison.

Unlike Luther, Nelson actually got his hands dirty. He wasn't just a peaceful protester.

Even if it was one night, I would have been devastated if that was me. Just divorce beforehand.

Well, to be honest, you're in a marriage because you agreed to it. If your marriage sucks then you can just divorce.

I don't think anyone really has an option to leave prison whenever they want.
#46 to #7 - anon (12/09/2013) [-]
thats right, you can just get a divorce.
User avatar #47 to #7 - kingmarston (12/09/2013) [-]

According to this text Nelson Mandela was in prison, being tortured now and then for 27 years out of his own free will. And after he got out he couldn't stand being married for even a year.

That goes to show how bad marriage is.

Nelson Mandela was the head of UmKhonto we Sizwe, (MK), the terrorist wing of the ANC and South African Communist Party. He had pleaded guilty to 156 acts of public violence including mobilizing terrorist bombing campaigns, which planted bombs in public places, including the Johannesburg railway station. Many innocent people, including women and children, were killed.

The ANC also made explosives disguised as children's toys. Apartheid was wrong, but Mandela was a violent, Marxist, terrorist.

so they had over a thousand ******* in prison, they picked one they could free that would forgive the white man. Nelson mandela was that ****** .

Mandela's wife, the one who kept the revolution going for the 27 years he was in prison, actually fought during those 27 years, to have the people she was fighting against be forgiven.

Of course she divorced his ass.

he actually lived like a normal man while in prison. his guards even allowed him to take walks around local towns every morning during the latter part of his sentance. mandela was never in real danger while in prison at all
