When you really get down to it, Kojima would be far more comfortable in a directing chair or writing anime. In fact he went to college to be a director, and most of his family and friends encouraged him to be a director. And if you pay close attention to the hype around these games, the story is most praised, not the gameplay itself. I know more about the characters than I do about what you actually DO in the games.
biggest evidence for this is in metal gear solid 4's 27 minute long cutscene, which is in a part of the game had 71 minutes of cutscenes. Not even kidding. They hold world records for being so long. 71 minutes of dialogue can be broken roughly into 3.5 episodes of anime. Considering a single season of this hypothetical Metal Gear Anime would be 26 episodes, that is PLENTY of room for kojima to stretch his legs. Now imagine if it was as popular as One Piece. hundreds of episodes of story for him to exposition the **** out of for years to come.
"Kinda sad really that most people have the attention span of gnats." - some asshole on IGN.
I'll have you know that the gameplay in most metal gear games is phenominal. I appreciate the story, but I wouldn't give a **** about any of it if it weren't tied to some of the best and most interesting stealth mechanics in the genre. The level of detail in the gameplay for each of his games is seriously mind boggling.
Just because you hear more about story than you do gameplay doesn't mean its not great. I replay the first three games yearly and skip all cutscenes when I do so, because that **** is fun as **** .
Not really, the gameplay has always been praised. There's a reason people praise MGS3 as the best in the entire franchise, because at that point, it had the best gameplay. Guards actually heard your footsteps even if you weren't on a platform that made loud noise when you stepped on it. People saw you from not just a cone of vision 15 feet in front of them. Not to mention the other improvements that would stick like different outfits, camouflage, deeper CQC and finding information through interrogation.
I actually think they reached a high point with MGSV in terms of gameplay, the 3rd person mechanics are amazing, on the level of something like a Gears Of War and what I'd probably call an Industry Standard. No longer is the game balanced around different difficulties, something I think MGS1/2/3 suffered from was Extreme being reduced down to cheesy strategies and not real skill when it came to beating bosses. Tengu room anyone? It is still a game so of course people won't see you from a certain distance away even in broad daylight because it would probably be too frustrating to have to crawl around an outpost just to remain undetected even 200m away.
While you are right and the story, writing, and presentation are the stars of the show, metal gear has always received praise and high marks for its gameplay. If for no other reason then at each and every installment it basically redefined the genre of "tactical espionage action" that it had created, a genre that while small has affected the FPS world heavily.
like the story is the forefront, but the games are massive innovators which deserve merit
I still haven't definitively had someone tell me for sure, but on the off chance you know: Did the first MGS game have audible footsteps? It seems no one can remember and neither can I.
First MG game? no, MGS 1 on ps1? yes it did, also the first thief game and the first MGS game both came out in 98, so they are both even on the "did it first" thing
I never played the original, I based saying no on the video I had linked that involves a soldier in the snow following Snake's footsteps, but not hearing Snake run up directly behind him.
I thought there was a PC release? ah well. I'll figure it out tomorrow.
I'm going to put forward a similar proposal to killjoy, and recommend you give thief gold a try. Kinda like game swapping back when we were kids only less swapping and no need to return it ever.
either way, MGS 1 created a lot more for the genre besides that. note i haven't played the first thief game but in MGS 1 you can hide enemy bodies in lockers, hide in lockers yourself and be found if enemies are in alert in the room, follow snakes footprints, and can react to gunshot noises
Thief did all of that except you hiding in lockers and footsteps. you had to hide in shadows (as did the bodies), and almost the entire game took place in buildings so following footsteps would be kinda pointless. ( in thief's defense, there are never gold cups to steal at military bases.)
I think the easiest way to end this peacefully is for me to say that thief was not action oriented at all. MGS and Thief are opposite ends of the sneaky spectrum. Thief was super sneaky, MGS was shooty sneaky. Personally, I prefer the super sneaky aspect. It's a bit like a puzzle.
also I'm going to try MGS 1 tomorrow. (turns out it is carried on abandonware websites). find out definitively if there is footstep sounds or not. maybe you should do the opposite and play Thief gold. Think of it like game swapping with your neighbor back in the ye olde days before the internet.
yea, i will check it out, i mean as far as it goes i thought the modern reboot was fun enough.
Also if you are not playing mgs like a super sneeki breeki , then you are doing it wrong. no kills, no alerts, and under 2 hours. that is the big boss's legacy
I was pretty sure the point wasn't that his footsteps made a noise, but that enemies would react to it, the clip I had before shows his footsteps making noise in the snow, but an enemy failing to react to that. Do snow soldiers specifically not hear footsteps then?
See, that's why I love mgs5 so much. Hideo finally got the equation perfect. With the open world design of the game, there's not as much of a need for a crazy amount of cutscenes. When there there are cutscenes, hideo plays me like a damn fiddle
i think ocelot Kojima is just a fan of westerns. that would also explain the cowboy boots, even though he never rode a horse in mgs3 last time he was in the states
i'm having a hard time getting into revengence. all the other ones i can play for hours on end, but for soem reason i can only sit and play revengence for about an hour before i get bored.
neither can I, didnt even get half way into it but the whole cutting system is pretty cool but once Metal Gear Online comes out next month even more of my time is going into MGS 5.
Wanna know a cool fact about this scene?
Tough
The scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark as shot for the film was dramatically shortened; the original script intended Indy to fight the swordsman with a lengthy choreography and usage of his whip. However, Harrison Ford along with most of the crew were suffering from dysentery, and could not wear their trousers for more than a few minutes. Ford then suggested they "just shoot the ****** ". Steven Spielberg agreed, resulting in the biggest laugh of the film and one of its most memorable sequences.
I just finished this game (on emulator btw) and I have to say
this guy goes from "complete ******* bitch" to "best character in the series" just like that
and right after the credits we are informed that he double-crossed literally EVERYONE in the game
I was amazed
>Implying that Ocelot isn't the second ballsiest characters in the MGS Series, considering that he was doing all these tricks in front of mother ******* Big Boss and did not give a single **** .
Ocelot's one badass ************ , and you need to remember that.
Not only that but he is the person that played everyone literally like a damn fiddle.
