many stuffy business type guys see 3d printing as a dead end with no real pracitation.
i think they are just salty you can not set up an entire massive industrial system with they yet.

pracitation?

User avatar #51 to #16 - synthane (12/18/2015) [-]
It is a pretty good guess. I believe you were looking for "practical application", though.

ah thank you.

I'm totally cool with it! Awesome!
User avatar #6 to #5 - rmehandru (12/17/2015) [-]
Not just massive industrial systems. From my experience, 3D printing is not even close to being practical for even small scale production.
User avatar #19 to #6 - phantomcancer ONLINE (12/17/2015) [-]
Not production, but for prototyping it can be invaluable, saving time and money to make compenents that would otherwise need milling and meticulous assembly.

I built my first 3d printer a few years ago and I use it almost every day.
I have a milling machine, lathe, a few welders, etc. out in the shop but for quick projects (I made a "Liquid Sky" laser setup yesterday because I was bored) it is impossible to replace.
I also make strong, light multicopter parts that wouldn't be possible with traditional machining methods.
User avatar #65 to #22 - rmehandru (12/18/2015) [-]
The 3D printer you built is most likely super slow and inaccurate. Probably uses FDM (spools of filament)
#82 to #65 - autoxx (12/18/2015) [-]
Mine is generally around 80mm/s, that's pretty damn fast.
It does use filament but my parts are generally within a couple thou.
User avatar #84 to #82 - rmehandru (12/18/2015) [-]
FDM produces garbage quality parts. It's an outdated technology (over 30 years old)
#87 to #84 - autoxx (12/18/2015) [-]
YOURS might be poor quality.
I'm a machinist, I have no patience for low quality.
Don't tar everyone with your ****** brush.
User avatar #89 to #87 - rmehandru (12/18/2015) [-]
lol I dont use a **** printer like yours. I use an objet printer
#92 to #89 - autoxx (12/18/2015) [-]
Not bad if you have an extra >$6000 bucks laying around.
I can make tight tolerance parts with a machine that cost less than $200 and a few afternoons in the shop. If I need to get creative when making a part? I just get creative.

Face it, you're a printer snob.
User avatar #90 to #87 - rmehandru (12/18/2015) [-]
benchtop printers like yours are trash and not representative of current generation 3D printing technology. thats why its so affordable. its outdated
User avatar #62 to #19 - rmehandru (12/18/2015) [-]
Nobody is arguing with that. I use a 3D printer for prototyping
User avatar #61 to #19 - rmehandru (12/18/2015) [-]
All 3D printers that are affordable for consumers and small businesses are quite inaccurate and require hand finishing to produce anything remotely close to injection molding. For that reason I stand by my statement. I agree with you though. I use a 3D printer frequently for prototyping.
#98 to #61 - anon (12/18/2015) [-]
this is incorrect
User avatar #63 to #61 - phantomcancer ONLINE (12/18/2015) [-]
That's true. MakerBots at my school are slow, loud and low resolution, but they are still a great tool to have.
User avatar #64 to #63 - rmehandru (12/18/2015) [-]
Makerbot uses FDM technology (uses those large spools of filament) which is super outdated and is only being used because a larger company (Stratasys) owns the patents to more advanced and more efficient printing methods
#99 to #64 - anon (12/18/2015) [-]
not exactly, sla and sss will win but those machines require inert gases, high power dangerous lasers, nasty ass resin and curing baths. theres no danger with fdm for kids other than burning yourself
User avatar #31 to #6 - inyourmind (12/18/2015) [-]
3d printers (the metal type) are in use now by NASA and some military contractors as they are capable of producing high complexity parts faster, cheaper, and with greater precision then traditional methods. As an example apparently NASA reduced the number of parts in one of it's injector systems from 115 to 2 due to 3D printing.
#13 to #6 - anon (12/17/2015) [-]
Except they are printing houses in china to live in
User avatar #18 to #13 - heartlessrobot (12/17/2015) [-]
Yeah but it's china, you can't really live there.
User avatar #104 to #6 - hecatonchires (12/18/2015) [-]
Then you have no real experience with the technology. It is a fixed cost that for very small aplications is much more benificial than molding. And as other people have already said, invaluable for prototyping.
#97 to #6 - juris (12/18/2015) [-]
For example we do use high precision (1 micrometer) 3D printer to print tiny ass objects for science! It would be really good if they can push it even to better precision while extending the total size of the object (just few milimeters)

how did he manage to model the exact shape that would fit into that perfectly?
User avatar #67 to #66 - dorfdorfdorf (12/18/2015) [-]
either he chipped it out and printed the bricks onto it, or he 3D scanned the corner to get a perfect model which he used to print out
