But volts dont kill. Ampere kills.
User avatar #57 to #17 - sirgawain ONLINE (01/08/2016) [-]
Well, if you wana get science-y, 5000 Volts isn't even a measure of Charge.
Coulombs, on the other hand...
#100 to #57 - Fgner (01/08/2016) [-]
He said a 5,000-volt charge, not 5,000 volts of charge. So we have no way of knowing how much charge is there, merely the potential of that charge.

If you want to actually get science-y, the old adage that voltage doesn't kill you is misleading. Current can't flow if potential can't overcome resistance. They have a direct relationship with each other and neither functions without the other. So, in reality, voltage and amperage are in a joint contact to murder your ass.

This guy explains it great:
"Saying that the voltage doesn't kill is like saying the earthquake in the middle of the ocean doesn't kill, it's the tsunami... if I shoot you, it's not my fault, it's the bullet's."
Which is the Killer, Current or Voltage?
#108 to #100 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]
We allready know all of this. But as we said. Volts dont kill. ampere does. But we also said that ohm, volt and amps cant be without the others. And i explained that if the 5000 volts have aminimum ampere the human skin has a resitance so hig that the amps wouldnt be lethal. It would be minimal. Like 1&80th of a lethal dose
#58 to #57 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]
Where did u learn that. I need sauce before i trust **** online
#59 to #58 - sirgawain ONLINE (01/08/2016) [-]
College. Last quarter.
Charge is measured in either Elementary Charge Units or in Coulombs.
Volts are a measure of Electric Potential, and the unit derivation is Joules/Coulomb. Its equivalent type of measurement in Fluid Mechanics would be pressure.
Amperes are a measure of electrical current, and the derivation is Coulombs/Second.
Ohms are a measurement of resistance to current and, to my knowledge, are an elementary (not derived) unit (correct me if I'm wrong).
Watts are a measurement of power, and the derivation is Joules/Second. This can be achieved also by multiplying Voltage by Amperage.
V=IR (Voltage equals Current times Resistance)
The human body has very high resistance, meaning high voltage is necessary for there to be a large current flowing through the body.
User avatar #75 to #59 - srskate (01/08/2016) [-]
via math, Resistance would have to be Joule-Seconds/Coulomb^2
#61 to #59 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]
Yes. and as i said earlier. The human skin (Dry) has a resitance of 2 megaohms. ( 2 million ohm) and can withstand 0.2 amps. The volatge in the cartoon is 5000 volts. 5000/2000000 ohms= 0.0025 ampere. So it is non lethal
User avatar #62 to #61 - sirgawain ONLINE (01/08/2016) [-]
I wasn't arguing against you, you asked where I learned it.
I answered, with other electricity science- partially for my own review and partially to provide some semblance of proof that my earler statement wasn't made-up.

They both do.. USB for example is generally 5V@1AMP
However, touching the positive, and negative terminals of a usb cable, doesnt cause any kind of shock on regular dry skin..
A taser on the other hand is usually something like 10,000 volts, at .01 amps
Quite a nasty shock, (not lethal by any means, but still if it were 10,000 volts@.5AMPs could be
#20 to #17 - moen (01/08/2016) [-]
And ampere is determined by volts and ohms if I remember right. So loads of volts usually means loads of ampere.
#29 to #20 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]
But as bando said. The human body has 2 mega ohms of resistance. That means I=U/R. That we have 50000/2000000= 0.025. So 1/8th of a lethal dose of amps
User avatar #50 to #29 - crazygoose (01/08/2016) [-]
Wouldn't it be different for Astro here, since you know he ain't a human boy.
#55 to #50 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]

Dry human body has 2 mega ohms of resistance, human beings start into serious cardiac arrest and muscle contractions at 2-4 milliamps, idk , I work inside a steel mill and we have 100V-240V everywhere and higher at our transformers and even those are dangerous
#25 to #22 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]
Yes. That is right. the amps kills. ( Over 0.2 amps is lethal) But i say that volts dont kills but amps does

But how does THAT not kill people then?
I gotta be honest, I´m a total physics geek, but electricity is the one thing that is still witchcraft to me. I can tell you everything about astrophysics particle physics, but this basic **** always stumps me.
What exactly does the volts number mean, and what does the number of Ampères mean?
Explain it to me with what each would be if you were to draw a wave function of electricity - would volts be the height of the troughs, the frequency of the wave, would Ampères be the value of the delta between highest and lowest point of the graph...?
Would be much appreciated!

High voltage, allows electricity to pass through resistance skin itself, is somewhat resistant to electricity, that's why you can touch a 9 volt battery without feeling it (but the same battery will shock when its electrodes touch your tongue)

Though electricity is somewhat random, and it ofcourse depends on the route it takes through your body. which is why even lightning strikes can be survived

as defined by google:
Amperage (amps for short) is a measure of the AMOUNT of electricity used. Voltage (volts) measures the pressure, or FORCE, of electricity. The amps multiplied by the volts gives you the wattage (watts), a measure of the WORK that electricity does per second.

Basically electrons 'burn' the sugars? within the bodies cells, essentially killing them, and generating heat
and since amperage is the number of electrons.. more electrons, means more burning, but only if allowed to flow via voltage..

Sorry. I read it as 50k not 5k. We end up with 0.0025 amps. So it will be almost minimal amps
#30 to #26 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]
But 50k Volts without ampere wouldnt be lethal. i=u/r. so 50000/2000000=0,025amps. And the lethal dose is 0.2
#42 to #30 - anon (01/08/2016) [-]
But if the math counts it to 0,025 and lethal amount is 0,2, then it shouldnt be dangerous

Yeah, it happened to me too when i made some improvised bridges to test security settings and the likes, but with 400 volts.
It didn't really "hurt", it was more like a burn, followed by getting softly punched by Kenshiro from fist of the north star very often, then leaving with a strange feeling in you.
Then they made me drink a lot of water and sent me home, woo~
#38 to #37 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]

Thats true, i know noone in my field that wasn't zapped with at least 230V.
I also used to be careful, but as usual, you just get too brave after 2 or 3 years.....
#40 to #39 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]
Yea. And our standard voltage is 230 volts in norway. Its what we work wit the most. Except those few times we either work with low voltage alarm systems or when we work with 500 volts. Only worked with 500 volts once tho
User avatar #41 to #40 - erotictentacle ONLINE (01/08/2016) [-]
Wait, 500V?
We have 3 main categories too. 24V, 230V and 400V.

But we have 400V because its roughly 230 x (square root)3
Because 230 has only 1 (Pole? what is charged, not sure how to call it in english), a neutral and PE, while 400 has 3 Poles(?) and a neutral and PE.
So im kinda curious
#45 to #41 - chrispthesebbe (01/08/2016) [-]
We have a special kind of instrument that let us use 500 volts with very low ampere. Dont remember the name of it tho. We use it mostly for testing systems
