This has become my copy pasta whenever the issue of fear of sharks/deep water is brought up. I just like to share it in hopes it helps someone.
Story time!
I used to have nightmares regarding sharks and open, deep water, where you can't see the bottom. Even in real life, I used to start getting scared swimming in a deep pool (diving pools) because how the bottom looks bleak.
I used to even get scared watching sharks on TV. Even the image of Kyogre in open water scared me. And that snake-fish creature in Finding Nemo also made me feel uncomfortable; it was indeed irrational.
Usually my nightmares involving sharks were so ridiculous, and in retrospect, I find them funny. Sometimes the nightmare starts with me few hundred yards from the sea, so I thought I was safe. then somehow, I find myself closer to the sea. Now I'm at the edge of it, and now somehow I fell in. The edge I was standing on is now a high cliff that I can't climb. The waters I'm in are now pitch black; I can barely see my own bottom half. But somehow I know the shark is there. I panic and try to swim away, climb, or anything. I was in terror, but I don't have a clear memory of being attacked. funnily enough, I have been attacked by a shark in several nightmares. When the bite in the dream has no real repercussion, the nightmare ends. Ironically, the worst nightmares are the ones where I just keep running away and survive.
Now, if you were wondering why I mentioned "used to be afraid", it's because I'm no longer afraid of sharks or the deep open water; cured if you will, and that's the interesting part of the story. I was starting to have one of the deep sea nightmares: I was on a raft in the middle of no where. Dark waters. Sharks circling. But then I paused. I told myself I ain't having anymore of this. I will conquer this fear. Now I'm partially lucid that this a nightmare, but I'm still afraid. I told my self: "Is this the worst you got? I want something scarier!" The swimming sharks turned into even bigger sharks. "More!" I stated, and they turned into something scarier and more sinister. My imagination was working itself to create that scariest beast I could imagine. Then, the huge sharks turned into this huge dragon-like creature. I was so huge, that I probably was as big as one of it's teeth. "That's good enough" I exclaimed with a smile.
I jumped off my raft, forcefully swimming towards the monster. Then, that was it. Nothing happened. I continued with my dreams normally. After I woke up, I found my fear of sharks and the deep was gone. I never had any deep-sea nightmares after that, and rarely any nightmares ever.
Edit on the copy pasta: I actually had a crippling nightmare few nights ago, but get this, there was nothing scary about it. I had the same feeling of paralysis and fear in my dream as I usually have in nightmares, but I was in a normal room on a normal bed and there was a normal CRT TV. Even in my dream/nightmare I was thinking: "Uhh... this annoying feeling again. Just fight it and get over with it.
the only sharks you really have to be afraid of are bull sharks, tiger sharks, and maybe the hammerhead but i heard they can very. all other sharks dont really mess with humans
basically Bullsharks will attack you for ***** n grins, tigersharks and hammerheads are fairly agressive but will really only attack out of hunger or fear/surprise, so still fairly often and all the other sharks are usually just curious. they bite things to see what they are and the stuff they bite panics and bleeds and the shark goes nuts
When beholding the tranquil beauty and brilliancy of the ocean’s skin, one forgets the tiger heart that pants beneath it; and would not willingly remember that this velvet paw but conceals a remorseless fang.
Well, you linked a listing of the most dangerous sharks to humans.
Doesen't mean that sharks are agressive animals. The thing about tiger sharks though is that it's (probably) the only shark that can actually eat poeple (since it has a tendancy to eat almost everything) however it usually only attacks divers. And I think most shark attacks are on surfers.
when I was younger I was playing oddworld: a stranger's wrath on my xbox and I was swimming in water and then I saw a barrel, which I thought was a monster, so naturally I shot it. Needless to say, it exploded in my face and I got so scared that i scarred me for life.
I am still super scared of going into water when playing video games.
Example: I have never done anything in the water, except the campaign in Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 3:2. And Far Cry 3 is one of my favorite games and I can not enjoy it to it's fullest just because of something that happened when I was young.
What was it about old school games making water so ****** evil man?
To this day it makes me feel nervous.
The worst was that there were no water enemies in any games i played for like 5 or so years and I started to relax about it but then i got far cry 3. The first time a gator got me in that I almost shat my pants and actually screamed like a ******* woman.
It's been since resident evil 4 came out since I've seen a water boss.
Back in the day, you were either playing the fancy new 3D games on your Playstation or Nintendo or playing your meh 2D games on a smaller Nintendo. Now, by this point, the philosophy had already been drilled into you that water levels are the spawn of the devil himself or that water was down right deadly.
Now, if you had Spyro growing up, you knew what to deal with. If you had Jakk, you knew damn well not to go too far out into the ocean or face the dreaded shark. There was just something about water that made developers go ******* nuts with making it the worst part of any game, either by adding drowning mechanics that have short time-periods before you died, or by making it so terrifying that you never have any reason to go there.
Personally, I think Cthulhu himself was trying to keep future generations from getting too comfortable with exploring the ocean floor, so he had the developers do his mad bidding of keeping us away.
Am I the only one who read that as you being scared of playing xbox whilst in a swimming pool, like yeah bud that sounds like a good way to get killed.
**imdusty used "*roll picture*"** **imdusty rolled image**its not fake its two videos cut into one. www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-n2XZJsk1s
heres the sauce on the real shark capture hot chick is just basically a bonus
I was a high school swimmer, and I play water polo at a collegiate level now.
I also have an irrational fear of deep open water.
All the pools I swim in when I'm on home turf are fairly small and not too deep, but you can imagine how this could be problematic when I travel for competition and they show us these huge-ass pools that can be up to 20+ feet deep near the diving area.
Swam with them nothing to fear leave them alone and they are most of the time more than happy to do the same. Black tip sharks are ******* man eaters though.
I've had this happen before, cept instead of a shark it was a gator. Long story short, when you jump in a lake in FL with no supervision around and you here your friends yell GATOR!, you learn to swim pretty dam fast.
this really gives me the chills, back when i was swimming,i always had this irrational fear that of sharks being in the water when we had a competition or something. I dreamed about it multiple times and they didn't stop until i was about twelve. maybe switching to constantly dreaming about boobies helped
