seriously, I worked a 10 hr shift today ugh. And multiple customers would interrupt me talking to other customers, completely messed up the store like most stuff wasn't even on the hanger anymore. And it took forever to close because the manager who was closing doesn't let us "clean" (fix hangers and **** ) while we work because "it makes customers feel uncomfortable"
i just got my first retail job and my first shift was on black friday. i had no idea what was going on.... thank god i dont work boxing day although that time and a half pay
Yesterday, an older woman berated me for 10 minutes about how her favourite brand of coffee was not on sale. She then proceeded to walk me through the entire store in search for said brand, the whole time yelling about our ad for the sale and how I was a liar (I'm just there to unpack new merch). Finally she stops exactly at the spot she first 'talked' to me and grabs a coffee package of an entirely different brand that was indeed on sale. She then turns to me, pushes two packs into my arms because they were not 'sealed' anymore (they were dented a tiny bit) and stomps off with a third.
Worked at ttrieardwalk and the electric grill roller thing for hot dogs pooped out so they weren't dully cooked and some butthole yelled at me because I wouldn't serve him a hot dog that was still frozen in the center. Like I get it man I said 10 minutes till done 20 minutes agiO when you tried to order the first time but I was under the impression our cooking device wouldn't be **** .
I work in a restaurant and a lady yelled at me for 5 minutes because I told her it would be a 10 minute wait estimate. She started yelling at me as soon as the waiting list said 10 minutes telling me that "I HAVE BEEN HERE FOR 20 MINUTES AND YOU SAID 10" and I pointed at the screen where it clearly said 10 minutes. When the 11 minute mark hit a table was available and I tried to show her but instead she continued to yell for another 4-5 minutes about how we need to be more honest about our timing estimation.
She then proceeded to sit down, look at the menu for a minute, decided she didn't like anything, and left
I work at a gas station and this one lady was getting really bitchy with me because she thought we had to reset the pumps from the desk after every transaction (it does it automatically but the numbers stay on the pump) and refused to listen when we explained that all she had to do was take the pump of the hook and wait 5 seconds for us to activate it.
Finally she said she understood so I went to help some other customers for a few minutes only to return to here shouting at me for not resetting the pump.
Then the guy I was working with told me off for leaving her at the pump when she said she was fine and didn't need help.
Story time:
So I work at a grocery store bagging and collecting carts and there's this one old lady who is in the store almost every day(usually more than once in a day because she forgets something on her list). She always wants her bags super light (no more than 3 cans per bag). She also always complains about at least one stupid thing.
One day she comes through my line with the usual things, but this time with 2 cases of water bottles 24 per case in her cart. Before I even started bagging she tells me in her passive aggressive voice "before you bag could you please use hand sanitizer because I just saw you touch your mouth" my hands were nowhere near my mouth . So I "sanitize" my hands and bag her **** as lightly as possible all the while pretending not to be annoyed at her inspecting every bag and she asks me to help her put the large water cases in her car. She opens up the trunk and I put the two cases in and go to grab the many other bags to put in. She suddenly said "I want those over there" and proceeds to push both water cases at the same time to the side(WITH ONE HAND). As I'm trying to contemplate why she wanted those bags so damn light after what she just did I say the usual "have a good day" or some crap and she thanks me for the extra work I did helping her to her car its not extra work since we are expected to help anyone to their car who asks and that she would tell the manager about the extra help I gave and the niceness I strugglingly showed and I go back inside.
Later on in my shift I see her again she forgot to get something as usual and she ends up in my line again. While I'm wasting tons of bags on her few items and she's complaining to the cashier about their terrible bagging as usual she asks me if I heard anything from my manager. At first I had no idea what she was talking about and said no until I realized that she really did tell the manager about my "extra help". She then proceeded to tell me that she would COMPLAIN to the manager for them not rewarding me and I had to desperately try to nicely convince her not to complain.
I still see this old lady in the store every week, I try to avoid her at all times now. I have more grocery store ramblings if anyone's interested
No offense bro, but it sounds like you're bitching about nothing. She probably ask you to bag everything separately because she's old af and can't carry anything heavy (in relation to her). She's back all the time because again she's old af and forgets stuff. My Grandma is 70 rediculously feeble and forgets stuff everyday. In this particular story it just sounds like she knows that she's probably a pain in the ass and wanted you to get some recognition for putting up with and helping her out. Sounds more like she's on your side than anything else. I've worked retail for 6 years and in no way am I biased towards customers but it just sounds like you really don't have anything to complain about with this one. Other than the fact that you're annoyed you have to do a little bit of extra work for someone who isn't as capable as your average joe.
I work at Best Buy
If you think a 2 minute interaction at the register with a bad customer is bad, try a 30 minute conversation with a bad customer who won't believe she's wrong
"Does this computer have a chip port?"
"Uh, like a SD card slot ot USB?"
"THE THING RIGHT HERE!" (Points to usb)
"Alrighty so the Usb, this computer does in fac-"
"DON'T YOU CORRECT ME. I CALL CALL IT A CHIP PORT IF I LIKE"
"Hey what cases here will fit my IPad?"
"What model do you have?"
"What?"
"Do you know if you have an IPad Pro, or an IPad Air 2, or maybe a mini? One of those"
"I don't know, are they different sizes?"
"Yup, you'd have to kn-"
"Well I don't just give me a case that will work"
-Customer looking at a heating fan-
"What would be the average monthly cost of electricity of this item "
( **** Im not sure) "Hmm... I'm not certain, but I will grab an employee who may know"
"If you're really this stupid your store isnt getting a purchase then."
-Customer looking an IPad
-Ask him about his needs, recommend a cheaper samsung tablet since he isn't using it for much
"Oh, so you're a Samsung guy, huh?"
"I'd consider myself Samsung I suppose"
"Well I feel sorry for you being brain dead stupid"
Dude, I work at best Buy too, I am customer service (aka cashier)/Life styles depending on the day of week. I had an interal scream moment on the cash register today.
I was checking a guy out and he wanted the 8in amazon tablet. We only had the 11in. I told him what we had and he asked me if I would give him the 11in for the price of the 8in since he wanted the inferior technology. I tried to explain I couldn't do that in the nicest way possible (considering we are backed up to our appliance departmen line wise) and he threw a hissy fit and finally said "fine I will take my business elsewhere" I was screaming so hard my whole shift today.
I worked in retail for a year. Wasn't half as bad as people are always saying. Overwhelming majority of people I saw were kind, well-mannered and patient if I ****** up. It was in a shop for nicotene vaporiser stuff, so its not like we only got high society customers only, quite the opposite.
I think what people mean when they say they hate working in retail, they hate working in retail in a country where people don't have any ******* manners.
i kinda have to agree with you. i've worked in retail since around august, at a thrift shop. a lot of the customers are really old people, and college kids. really ******* nice people all around. if i could work at another thrift store i probably would, they seem like a chill place to work.
TBH I think "High Society" customers are usually worse. I work at a cell phone retail store and I agree with you. I'd say at least 30% are especially nice, 50% are neutral nice, and that last 20% range from standoffish to complete pieces of work.
Admittedly, I think it's easy to remember the mean customers compared to the more normal/nice interactions.
Why do you think I don't have a pretty sharp picture of the what kind of people buy vaping stuff after working in a store selling the stuff for a year?
People from all walks of life will try it but the ones that stick to it the most are the ones who are doing it because regular smoking was too expensive for them.
Most people aren't bad, but everyone gets angry. Working in retail, you'll find a lot of people who are going to use you as their vent (intentionally or not). 9/10 times, you'll be able to at least get things back to a calm place or at the very least direct their anger to something else that isn't you. When I worked with customer service, there were very few irredeemable situations that I encountered. Even people who came in furious with this or that or what have you generally left happier than they came in. In a lot of the cases they're just frustrated and want to be treated like a person rather than a number. Instead of saying "That's our policy, sir" you could try "Yeah, that's a stupid rule but my hands are tied. I wish I could help you but this is really all I've got the power to do" or pretty much anything that lets the person know that you're seeing them as an actual human being and not just another customer.
Don't explain that the rule is ****** ; typically the rules are not actually ****** , they exist because without them people would take advantage. Instead explain why the rule exists.
A lot of people get pissed that I can't fix their computer on the spot and have it back to them in a couple of hours, but I explain to them that it's first come first serve and that there are people who paid the same amount they're paying waiting on me to fix their computer too. Only person who this didn't work on said "That's not my problem" and I said "If you want me to work on your computer it actually is" and that was that.
If you have no confidence in your policies customers will stomp all over them.
That works too. Some people do respond well to my approach. I was only offering up one thing. Your thing works well, but I live in a town full of hot tempered and somewhat dull people so emotional appeals have a higher success rate than logical appeals. It makes me sad, but its true.
>Work at Rite-Aid for a summer as a cashier
>Most boring job, that Rite-Aid must have been turning no profit whatsoever
>Majority of customers are for the pharmacy, no contact with me
>One day a woman comes in to return a package of adult diapers
>No receipt, but not a big deal because store policy is "we don't give a **** "
>I scan, product not found
>Scan again, because cash register often follows store policy
>Product not found
>Type in UPC, product not found
>I look at the package and see that it very clearly says "Walgreens" on it
>Facepalm because I didn't notice this earlier
>Say "You can't return these here because they were not purchased here, they are from Walgreens"
>She responds: "I know for a fact I bought them here"
>Line forming behind her, first time that Rite-Aid has had more than two customers simultaneously
>justmyluck.jpg
>"Ma'am, that is not possible, we do not sell Walgreens products."
>Responds louder than before
>"I KNOW FOR A FACT I BOUGHT THEM HERE!"
>Tell her the best I can do is get my manager.
>Call manager, manager comes up from jacking it in the back
>I tell manager that this customer wants to return this product, pointing to Walgreens logo on the package
>Manager says, right away, "Ma'am, you cannot return these here because we don't sell Walgreens products."
>Woman says "That's what I was trying to tell your cashier."
>She takes diapers and leaves quickly
>I hold back the urge to scream
>Explain to manager my side of story
>Manager tells me the store policy and walks away
Work in retail
Get nothing but good reviews as I've worked at a beach before getting the job so I know what I'm doing
Cover people every time I'm asked
Stay extra hours even when asked at the last minute
Help customers no matter how stupid/ rude they are
Legit had two customers talk about how I was probably a stoner right in front of me and another time had a redneck woman try to steal cigarettes of out my hand for her underage son
Have a manager that talks **** about me behind my back, makes me go out on my breaks to get her her **** , and disrespects me in front of others (had to confront the head manager with this)
Can almost never get a requested day off approved yet the new guy after me gets away with everything since his relative works there
Get ordered to work Black Friday, Christmas Eve, my brother's birthday, and New Year's Eve.
So yeah my 2 weeks notice might just condense into 2 seconds if **** doesn't change.
Just leave, I was in a very similar situation. If you have already waited at least a month for things to improve, and they haven't, leave and only put in two weeks if you want to try to look professional, if you don't, **** them walk out and say you will be back in 72 hours to pick up your last check.
Yeah I'm tempted to do just that at this point but a part of me just wants to hang in there until I can find another job that fits with school. I mean I know that retail is gonna be a bit of a bitch wherever I go but my friends don't really have to put up with the same **** that I do (hell one of my friends works at a Stop and Shop and they let him work for only 4 hours starting at 9 am on Christmas Eve- and he asked a couple days before) and I'm kind of tempted to fake sickness halfway through my shift for tonight-I need me some Christmas dinner
**ladyrazor used "*roll picture*"** **ladyrazor rolled image** Retail has made me feel dead inside. The customers this close to Christmas are assholes.
The rough part about working at a jewelry store is the cheap-ass last minute shoppers. I mean, we sell diamonds. That's most of our store. Your $100 budget just isn't worth 30 minutes of my time when someone right next to you is ready to spend like, $800 at least.
The plus side is that people who come into my store are incredibly polite, and I get to form a real bond with the customers when they come in.
Worked for K-Mart recently
It was a pretty old store, kind of run-down and lackluster
They put me in the back office on an old computer running what I think was Windows Vista
"Okay, you'll train in here today and Thursday, then you're on checkout."
Question why they wouldn't have me train with another employee
Yadda yadda store policy
Get to work
6 hours of mindless clicking later
I've watched countless instructional videos and taken pointless quizzes that taught me nothing
Literally most of it was just the most basic common sense stuff One of the quizzes was about what to keep refrigerated. Options were things like milk, ice cream, cereal, rice, etc. that anyone could tell you
I'd like to note at this point I had another job, and I gave them copies of my work and class schedules before I started
Thursday comes around, do the other half of the stuff
Take break halfway through, check schedule
See I'm scheduled for the weekend
HR person nowhere to be found
Not there at end of shift either
Shrug and go home, I'll call later
Call and let them know I can't come in on the weekend, already scheduled to work
They say it's okay
Saturday, get a call while I'm at the other job
"Heeeeeey... you were scheduled to work today... You coming in?"
Tell them I told HR lady that I already couldn't, ask to talk to her
On hold forever, lucky that it was a slow day
Cleared up eventually
Call back when I get home
Tell them I'm not sure I want to continue working there if scheduling can't be worked out
"Okay, bye."
*click*
And that's how I accidentally quit a ****** job before I even really started I did get to see a really over the top video on what to do if an active shooter enters the building though, so that was pretty neat
I've worked in a Kroger store (as a customer service rep at the front desk no less) for a year and a half, and I've only been cussed out once, and that was over the phone. Just be sincere, and apologize if something's going wrong, and people will be more forgiving (to you at least)
99% of people are not that bad at all. The 1% that are dicks does suck, but what gets me more is that management never has my back when **** goes down.
I'm an EasyTech, a lot of my work consists of standing in front of computers and typing stuff into reports. If I don't type or write stuff down I'll forget it, and it doesn't help that if I write part of a report on the computer and leave to help a customer then my session times out and I have to start writing the report all over again.
I was like 5 minutes into writing up a report and jotting down some notes for a computer I was working on when one of the 1 percenters came up. I looked up, smiled warmly, and said "I will be with you in just a few moments". I spend literally no more than 6 seconds typing my thoughts out and the customer let out a huff of impatience and stomped off.
Recognizing something was wrong I moved to assist the customer, knowing a mad customer would reflect on me poorly, but the customer had already beat me to the manager and was insisting that I was "ignoring" them.
I tried to explained that it hadn't even been 10 seconds but my manager cut me off before I could even finish and told me to leave. So I went back to finish my report and lo and behold my session timed out and I had to start all over again, and the customer got himself some "I'm a ****** customer, so give me a discount only assholes get" coupon.
Worked inside the St. Louis arch as a tourist photographer, manager was an ass and some customers could be unbearably loud and ignorant, but I miss it due to the funny **** I used to see on a daily basis there with people from across the country.
