I know dog **** when it comes to cars.

I had no idea this was illegitimate advice, **** , I thought the anti-freeze in the brake fluid sounded smart enough.

does the screw in your tires sounded legit to you ?
#31 to #22 - therealmaster (11/28/2015) [-]
Well, there are screw in tire studs that are actually legit. It's just that they're closer to half an inch, rather than two.
#112 to #31 - hikakiller (11/28/2015) [-]
eh, no. screw them from the inside out.
User avatar #30 to #22 - iamnuff (11/28/2015) [-]
I'm glad that was in first. If it hadn;t been, i might actually have been fooled until three or four ideas down.

I know **** about cars too, and the coolant one sounded fairly legit.
Not something I'd do without googling it, but plausible.
User avatar #36 to #30 - erotictentacle (11/28/2015) [-]
the coolant sounds legit? normal water would freeze in winter
User avatar #61 to #36 - iamnuff (11/28/2015) [-]
I have no idea what the freezing point of car coolant was.

In hindsight it's obvious, but like I said, I'm pretty ignornat on this topic.

That's why I'd google it first.
User avatar #62 to #61 - erotictentacle (11/28/2015) [-]
well, the usual rule that tends to keep you safe is:
"if you don't know what you're doing, don't do anything. Have it done by someone who knows, then you'll know better"
User avatar #139 to #62 - meltdownlol (11/28/2015) [-]
I don't like that advice, you don't learn. My advice would be go find information where it can be trusted, not funnyjunk. And if its already broken try to fix it yourself, either you **** it up and learn a little or you've fix it and learned a lot.
User avatar #144 to #139 - erotictentacle (11/28/2015) [-]
Well, when i said "have it done" i didn't mean "drop it off and go take a piss while he does it", but more like "go have it done, observe, ask, and remember how to properly do it.

I should've specified that, yeah. Sorry.
But i don't agree with just trying to fix something if you don't know what you're doing, it could easily turn a 20min effort into a 2h and 1.5k$ effort
User avatar #153 to #144 - meltdownlol (11/28/2015) [-]
The first time I tried to fix an iPhone 4 I knew nothing about the internals except for a tutorial on youtube, it took me just over 3hrs and it still didn't work, the second time it took me 2.5 hrs but worked. Now It takes me 30 minutes and have learned so much. I've spent days trying to fix computers before finding out the problem. I also said already broken that way it shouldn't cost 1.5k I can fix almost anything because of my way of thought.
User avatar #155 to #153 - erotictentacle (11/28/2015) [-]
Ok, you have a point
User avatar #67 to #62 - iamnuff (11/28/2015) [-]
I dunno. Staying ignorant and not even knowing how the coolant in your car works is kinda sad.

A better rule of the thumb is "Take advice, then do your own research, Educate yourself"

You just need to be willing to do enough research that you don't **** up, then take responsibility if you **** up anyway.

For simple things, that is. I wouldn't want to try to learn how to do serious repairs via pro-tips from the internet.

Simple **** like "How do I change my oil in a X-model car" is easy.
User avatar #69 to #67 - erotictentacle (11/28/2015) [-]
Yeah, but maybe its just me, but i'm a complete jackass if i can't watch someone completely do it, or be guided through the process once. Like changing oil, checking it, replacing coolant, refilling the windshield water thing, jumpstarting, towing, etc.
User avatar #77 to #69 - opticmonkey (11/28/2015) [-]
Buy cheap cars, if you **** up sell it and buy a new cheap car
User avatar #80 to #77 - erotictentacle (11/28/2015) [-]
oh, i did. My car cost me 3'800CHF.

But i still want to treat it as good as i can while taking deccent care of it. I have to keep it for at least 3 more years after all
User avatar #81 to #80 - opticmonkey (11/28/2015) [-]
I dont know what the exchange rate is, but if a CHF is close to a canadian dollar then that's not what I'm talking about when I say cheap car, I'm talking 400 bucks, and I usually run it for a year then sell it. Sucks not always having a reliable car but you sure learn a lot about cars after owning junkers for a few years
User avatar #82 to #81 - erotictentacle (11/28/2015) [-]
Oh, THAT cheap you mean....

i was wavering on the first one, because what are spikes but some metal in the tire. but the other "tips" gave it away. i dont know **** about cars but letting the motor run and draining oil or to substitute coolant with water just did sound like ********
User avatar #38 to #30 - blamie ONLINE (11/28/2015) [-]
Ethylene glycol (car coolant) is an alcohol with a very low freezing point, and it also lowers the freezing point of water. It lowers the freezing point of water so low actually, they use it in almost any car in any environment because they know theres only like 3 places on the planet it could possibly freeze.

you dont need to be a mechanic to know basic maintenance, like oil change, tire and bla bla bla. it's like everything you should help yourself and learn a bit can help you a lot in the future car are expensive and well maintained car cost less.

User avatar #52 to #51 - basaltface ONLINE (11/28/2015) [-]
nah im not a douche dont worry And yea, i mean i can do an oil change but thats about it. But if it comes to other things i usually do the cheap porn version of repairs. Opening the hood and looking inside while waiting for my girl to come home.

Knowing how to change a tire to a spare is both incredibly easy and a very valuable skill. Being stuck on the side of the road waiting for your girl or for roadside assistance sucks like nothing else. It seriously is very easy. Get her to show you how sometime if you don't want to look up a tutorial.
