Remakes and reboots are cool. But I would also like to see some original ideas though.

Yeah I can understand why he would not want to, considering that most of his cinematic output has been sequels to Phantasm.

Technically this one's a sequel but I guess a sequel 35 years later could also be called a reboot

Cant be done. Original ideas dont exist anymore. Everything is reminiscent of something to someone and once relations are drawn the idea is no longer considered original.

I blame upcoming. A lot of teachers and parents put emphasis on teaching old ideas rather than coming up with new ones.

yeah, because thought is abstraction. our consciousness is basically entirely composed of connections of abstractions, and yet we still refer to ideas as being original.
obviously there's some sort of vaguely defined threshold for what one would and would not consider to be "original".
it's a lazy argument to just increase the scope of the discussion to invalidate something.
i may as well say "well all things are made of atoms, and all atoms are made from hydrogen, so all people are literally exactly the same"

I'm aware, but my statement of originality isn't vague. If you're not the first one to think of it, then it's not an original idea. It can be a new idea built on an original idea, but it doesnt change the fact that it's been done before. That doesnt mean it's a bad idea though.
Take Avatar and Dances With Wolves for example. While Avatar is a gorgeous and very enjoyable movie, the story is very much the same as Dances With Wolves. The only difference is that Avatar takes place in the far future and Dances With Wolves takes place in the colonial era.
For an idea to be truly original there cant be anything similar to it, which can't happen in todays society as there are far too many people in the world.
We live in the age of innovation. Where we build upon the ideas of old. We were born far too late to have anything we do be considered original.

i wasn't accusing you of being vague, i was accusing you of having a meaningless argument.
all thought is abstraction and abstraction is an amalgamation of concepts.
I'm not saying you're wrong, i'm saying you're splitting hairs.

There are no stories free from the influence of other stories but there are plenty of original ideas.

Original ideas still do exist. Humans have not even learned all the knowledge there is to learn and there are original bad ideas that have not been tried as well. Similarity does not discredit originality, the chariot is just as original as the saddle. Anyways even if something was not original you could still innovate.
Point is you're ******* dumb if you are so arrogant to think everything has already been done. Kys fam.

It's not that they don't exist.
There's plenty.
Executives just don't like them.
New ideas are risky, while older franchises already have a fanbase they can rely on.

Except your associating new with original, which isnt the case.
There's too many people in the world now for originality to really exist. Everything anyone does is influenced by something they've seen or heard in one way or another, usually something made by someone els3. But just because it's not completely original doesn't mean it can't be good.
Look at World of Warcraft for example. They basically just did the same thing Everquest did, but improved the mechanics of the system. And it became a huge hit. But it's still not original since MMORPGs were already a thing. As was Warcraft. It was just a merger of the two ideas to make a new idea.

which means world of warcraft is original, since there was no world of war craft before it
By your logic I guess ******* fighter jets aren't original since there were normal air planes before them.
Similarity doesn't discredit originality and literally everything is influenced by something. No idea just comes to people, there was something in their life that they witnessed to inspire the original idea.

No offence but, if your definition of original means, "without influence from other things or ideas" than nothing in human history was original.
Original just means first

The more we interconnect, the more we realize that most ideas don't have just one origin - we were just too far away to notice.
That doesn't mean that originality is dead though.

Yup, just about right. I think the same goes with authors: everything's been written already.
