Its not just that, its general security patches, this will effect companies more than end users, but no more security patches means when new exploits are found Microsoft will not fix them, thus leaving your machine open to vulnerabilities, it has very little to do with anti-virus software/risk of getting a virus, it will also have a knock on effect with other bits of Microsoft Software because they will not be coding it to work with XP etc...

Basically microsoft is being a bitch and producing ****** operating systems while phasing out the only good one they've ever made. Which is really a kick in the teeth to those that have been loyal to their products for years.

Yeah, as of I think April 8th, Microsoft is no longer providing security updates for Windows XP, which is almost 12 years old now. It's strongly recommended that you upgrade your system to Windows 7 or 8. I recommend Win7 because it's most like XP and Win8 is really not good for non-touchscreen systems. You'll have a much better time updating to 7. You'll want to see if your existing machine will be able to upgrade to 7, though if it's an older machine you'll likely have to get a new one.
#337 to #37 - ugoboom ONLINE (04/11/2014) [-]
Skip 7. 8 is nearly a direct upgrade if you follow these copypasta-ed steps

To make it look and perform better:
_
Install Snowy8_ (a better, softer theme)
carborunda.deviantart.com/art/Snowy8-for-Windows-8-8-1-409788674

Install StartIsBack (the best start menu replacement IMO)
startisback.com/

Install Aero 8 (This gives transparency back. If you want, you can skip Snowy8 and use the W7 theme this mod gives you.)
You need to login to view this link

Download Old New Explorer (allows you to replace the W8 explorer with W7, partially or fully)
www.msfn.org/board/topic/170375-oldnewexplorer-make-your-81-explorer-work-like-win78-one/

Install RocketDock (optional) (what you see at the top of my screen)
rocketdock.com/

I seriously recommend this setup. Windows 8 is a lot more stable than 7, and the above mods make it feel like home. The result is what you see on the left.
User avatar #349 to #337 - vgmddg ONLINE (04/12/2014) [-]
Or just get Windows 7 and get the start menu and transparency standard. (Or get Mac OS X where the dock comes standard, or Linux where you can probably find a distro that has the exact layout you want.) Whatever. If you like Windows 8 and the new interface then you can do what you want. (No sarcasm. Seriously, I don't control you.)
My personal opinion is that I don't like the Win8 Metro interface for desktop only, non-touch screen interfaces. (Touchscreens and tablets are probably fair game.) In addition, for users who have had XP for a long time and aren't prepared for having to learn totally new interface like metro.
Windows 7 is the most similar to the XP interface, save for transparency, larger menu bar, and a couple other features. It'll be easier for XP users to adjust to 7.
User avatar #244 to #37 - popkornking (04/11/2014) [-]
However it's worth mentioning that MS is not going to be releasing further DirectX versions on 7, so if you have any high end hardware capable of DirectX 11 or higher you'll need 8-8.1 to get further support.
User avatar #148 to #37 - xxiixx (04/11/2014) [-]
8.1 is actually really nice if you get the shell that brings back the start button. It's faster than 8 and I don't mind the more artsy style.

Yes, yes it does. Should it? Probably not. But ******** still watermark everything on their website like they own it. And then traffic to the site gets to be so much that you can hardly ever find the original image. So yes, my panties are so far up my ass I can taste them.

Before 8 came out, I was hoping they'd break the pattern. It's a shame. Windows 8 isn't bad in the sense that it's a drain on resources or full of holes and functional issues, it's bad in the sense that the interface is clunky and un-intuitive as hell.

If microsoft hadn't tried that metro nonsense windows 8 would have been a good step forward. It would have made more sense to allow users to put those "tiles" right on the desktop alongside their normal icons rather than keeping the two things separate. It's almost as if mircosoft wanted to go entirely to their new tile-based scheme but were afraid to commit and risk freaking everyone out.

Maybe that's because it's for tablets?
Just install Windows 7 if you hate it that much.... This is the **** i dont get with people...

you guys complain, complain and complain about everything when the easiest way to deal with it is to just get rid of it...

Just because you don't know how to use something does not make it bad, it is actually faster to use the start menu then it was in any other windows, all you have to do is open start and start typing what you want and its there, no searching required, I would never go back to windows 7.

Yeah, i feel like most people just does not want to try to get used to windows 8. I still feel unsure about some features, but i for example love the splitscreen feature.

W8 isn't bad, man. Just disable metro and install a start menu. It's pretty nice.

I think I'm gonna turn my old dimension 2400 into a project computer.

Some guys have project cars, so why not?

The goal will be to make it play Skyrim on max settings with Graphic mods without it skipping in framerate.
#42 to #40 - cobrafan (04/11/2014) [-]
It'll have to play it at 640x480 unless you gut the entire thing and basically build a new computer, but it's fun to tinker with old PCs. I installed Pfsense (a wireless router OS) on an old desktop that my mom had but then I found out it only had 1 PCI slot, not even any PCIE slots... so now it sits in a closet.

I have a similar project going on right now. I'm taking my mom's 2002 Compaq and making it usable, but without changing the motherboard.

Stock: Celeron 2.5GHz Single core, 256MB DDR, 80GB IDE HDD with Windows XP, DVD-ROM, PCI Nvidia FX 5200, PCI fax card, 200W silent PSU.

Complete (I'm almost there): Pentium 4 2.6GHz Single core hyper-threaded, 2GB DDR, 500GB SATA 1.5GB/s HDD through PCI SATA card with Windows 7 or XP (not sure if I'll upgrade OS), Still DVD-ROM, PCI Nvidia GT 610 512MB, PCI Wireless card, same PSU.

Throw XBMC on it, and use it as a HTPC.
