Why the **** is this so thumbed up? It clearly says insisted to turn off HIS device. As in the child. The person probably waited until takeoff to take the picture of what the flight attendant thought was an electronic device.

You have no proof that this photo was taken at the time that the attendant told him to turn of that drawing device. This photo could've very well been taken when the attendant wasn't looking or even after the flight when the aircraft was taxing its way to the gate.

It is also unlikely that this person would even need to turn of his/her camera if it was just a regular digital camera that has no wifi and/or 4G data capabilities.

Its called "security theater"
if a big pile of metal you're flying through the sky at half the speed of sound in thats full of highly flammable fuel isn't properly shielded from the small amount of electromagnetic interference produced by an electronic device, or the radio signals sent out by it on a band specifically chosen and enforced by the fcc to prevent signal interference, have the slightest possibility to cause any sort of issue, then you have a much bigger problem to worry about than some idiot checking facebook on his iphone
many countries no longer restrict it, now that things are held to much higher safety standards. its a tradition we keep in America and several other countries because "its what we've been taught" so it helps make people feel safer, even though it doesn't actually do anything.
people will buy into anything you tell them when its about airplane safety, due to our overly irrational fear of airline terrorism.
If you use your phone during takeoff on a modern plane, and it interferes with anything onboard in any way whatsoever, you should change planes immediately, because there is a serious problem with it.

You're an idiot. I'm certified with my Private Pilot's license and I had to learn regulations.

Part 91.21 of the FAR/AIM says that nobody, not the Pilot in command may make use of any electronics on US-registered aircraft that's flying using Instrument conditions (due to the electromagnetic waves messing with radios and magnetic compass/navigation equipment.)

Instrument conditions means you can't see outside so you rely on your instruments to fly.

You're allowed to use your phone on airplane and ipods and stuff because they've been determined to not interfere with navigational or communicational equipment.

The waves don't cause explosions in fuel lines because if they did, the thousands of waves coming from the people IN the airport while the plane is parked would have already caused those explosions if that were the case. You take ALL electronics off during T/O and landing because if the plane were to lose engines, stall or something during take-off, the pilots NEED those radios to call tower and declare emergency on Emergency frequency among other things like setting transponders and SQUAWKing their emergency.

If you don't believe me on any of this: You need to login to view this link

#108 to #37 - skyelinesunrise (11/26/2013) [-]
Obviously they don't interfere with the fuel lines
And yes, the US regulations prohibit it
But a modern plane without anything extremely wrong with it will not get absolutely ANY radio interference from you using any sort of electronic device or radio device that is compliant with FCC regulations, because they operate on different frequencies. Thats the entire reason the FCC segments frequencies - so that they can guarantee there is a clear channel. Making a call on any modern FCC compliant phone CANNOT physically affect pilot communication or instrument operations.

The regulation is there for antiquated reasons, since way back in the day things were a lot less controlled.

And if using any other low wattage handheld device from the other side of a shielded cockpit door, that produces so little electromagnetic radiation to begin with that its virtually undetectable even a foot away, is capable of affecting instruments that are also properly engineered and shielded against interference, the electronics engineers paid 6-7 figures over at Boeing need to be replaced. I say this as an Electrical Engineer. It is NOT POSSIBLE for them to affect the plane.

The regulations are there for outdated reasons. Yes you're right that you aren't legally allowed to use them, in US airspace, during takeoff/landing, but there is no modern reason to justify this besides "making people feel safe."
#109 to #108 - VersusTheWorld (11/26/2013) [-]
Let's lay down some aeronautical knowledge up in this bitch.

All planes use a magnetic compass that relies on the magnetic field on the earth. Using the basic knowledge of physics that you should have as a so-called "electrical engineer", you'd understand that each plane has a compass direction card that shows if you want to fly (look at the top box, second one) a 0-3-0 heading using your magnetic compass (which is used in Instrument flight rules), with the radio on, it'll tell you to fly a 0-3-2 due to the interference from the radio and instruments since all radios and some instruments are electronically driven, it'll show you're going 0-3-2 but you're actually going 0-3-0.

Same thing would happen with cell signals since they send waves out to connect to cell towers and the like. Those waves interfere not only with the magnetic compass, but also the radio since they're a different frequency. With my phone on in the A/C i fly, i still get interference, so I keep it in airplane mode. It doesn't affect the airplane directly, it interferes.

**** nobody says: "I'm sure glad I can't use my phone on the plane, I feel so much safer." Being safe on a plane depends on the pilot's skill, his competence, and the aircraft being properly inspected and everything runs correctly.
