I doubt I'd recommend w10 to anyone unless they really needed dx12 for whatever reason.

Don't get me wrong, for all intents and purposes it's fine, and a must-have for development.

But. With the forced updates breaking every other system, the untested patches being thrown out left and right, the constant data being collected, the memory issues and the developer's stubbornness, I just cannot with a whole heart recommend it to the average user.

Also W10 start menu search is ******* useless. How can you take a feature that works great and gimp it so hard?

Don't underestimate the idiocy of the average consumer. A massive chunk of people on their computers don't even know what a driver is, let alone which ones they need.

I mean, it really does take a certain level of understanding and research to get into building PC's and replacing parts, etc.

The only difficult part is compatibility and part comparison.
You gotta know what processors work in what socket but on what chipset and sometimes specific bios revision.
    LGA 1151 is encompassing Skylake, Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake on H110, H170, Z170, B250, Z270, H270, Q270, Q250 and finally Z370
And coffee lake only works on Z370, Z170 and 270 can both do kaby lake but z170 can only after a bios update which requires a Skylake processor, Q250 is useless.
Then you got the actual processors that work on each board and its a ******* mess.

Once you know that kind of little **** it gets easy. Actual assembly is childs play.

Okay, well for one, those things are very much contributing factors, so I'm not sure why you're presenting it like they're separate. How long do you think it would take your mother to figure out how to build her own PC? If she had all the parts, would it just take her maybe two hours of research on Google to figure it out? I doubt it. Compare it to the prerequisites of buying a prebuilt computer. You don't need to have any kind of understanding of specs or parts to get one, and that is exactly what the average user has. A mechanic probably doesn't have any difficulty assembling a car, but the average buyer wouldn't be able to do it.

My mother is an outlier since she's probably more technologically literate than most, as someone who grew up during the early DOS age...
And yes, if you can use google, you can build a PC and not totally **** it up either.
Following a simple build guide on youtube will get you situated just fine.
You dont really need to know a lot of specifics if youre just going to look at a parts list someone else made and go "alright ill do this". Or just take what you want and run it past people who can check it for you, and tell you about it.
Its common on /r/buildapc, you bring your pcpartpicker list which already checks for compatability, and users there tell you if its good or not and what problems there may be with it, such as having 32gb of ram in a system with a pentium G4560 and a 1050ti, or pairing a 7700k with an RX 550 both things that i have seen...

2 hours on google? **** yeah, googling "how to build a PC" gives you a wikihow article, a bitwit video, and a whole bunch of other articles that cover everything you need to know.

Okay, but you're saying this from the perspective of someone who clearly already knows. Meet the fictional character Deborah. She's 45 years old, works in a flower shop, and uses her computer daily for facebook, occasional YouTube videos and a forum about dog ownership. She doesn't know what her OS is, and isn't even sure what an OS is to begin with. She uses Internet Explorer and has 4 toolbars that she never uses. Deborah is more or less the average PC user. You task her with building her own PC, and she's not even given any parts or initial instructions on how to go about it.

Will Deborah be able to rely on her prior knowledge to perform the task? Since the answer is no, the statement that "it really does take a certain level of understanding and research to get into building PC's and replacing parts, etc." is very much apt. You have to have a certain level of "tech-savviness" to build your own PC. I'd also argue that using someone else's knowledge by directly asking them what goes where is cheating. If Deborah's husband builds the PC for her, or she's asking someone online of a step-by-step instruction manual, it's not the same thing as her building it.

But what >>#113 said was on point, I underestimated just how stupid the average consumer is, and your Deborah is a good example

Most companies that sell computers have builders where you select what parts and features you want.

    You're being a semantic dick.

    Builders are a thing, yes.

As is buying a product without having to go into all the specifics since not every consumer would understand the difference between GPU's, CPU's, power supply, etc

not gonna complain about the usage of "building", since it might be different in your area from mine

When I hear build, it's selecting the parts that go into it, whereas straight-up buying is just like paying for something off the shelf

Sorry if it's a little confusing, kind of tired

When building a computer with dell, alienware, etc you select the parts you want in it and they put it together.

Again, even in my original post I included obtaining a new computer. You didn't need to specify buying a prebuilt pc because it was included to everyone aside from semantic dicks.
