That was fake, and why should he be person of the decade?
User avatar #39 to #38 - prettyflyforaderp (12/18/2013) [-]
really? but also i mean its not obvious? everyone loves him, he helps tons of people, excepts everyone, he uses the money to help the less fortunate, which is a hell of alot more then most any church has ever done
User avatar #45 to #39 - ihatem (12/18/2013) [-]
Well he's being a decent guy, but a lot of people old enough to know John Paul II say he's got a long way to go, he just looks really refreshing after having a guy like Benedict. John Paul II spoke out against and called for ceasefires in many African tragedies like Rwanda and Apartheid, apologized for over a hundred things Catholics had done, from not aiding the Jews during the Holocaust to as far back as burning people at the stake during the Reformation and even Galileo's trial, and one big one people love is that he really got movements going in Eastern and Central Europe to bring down Communism, and used the churches money to fund aid for political freedom.

well thats amazing and great, but i mean he should be person of this current decade, hes done great things compared to others in this decade. people like him or bill gates show how great people can be in this current time frame, and im atheist and i have more respect for this pope then i do any famed atheist currently

"this decade" meaning 2003-today, or literally the 2010's?
User avatar #61 to #60 - prettyflyforaderp (12/18/2013) [-]
hmm, well if we go by 2003-2013, thatd be and awkward decade, but theres still more to see in the 2010's, though he has done great things that would be hard to top in the years to come

Personally I think 'person of the decade' would really spit on what Francis is doing. His entire attitude is one of equality. To elevate him above all others and say, THIS MAN IS THE BEST MAN THAT EXISTED IN THIS TEN YEAR SPAN OF TIME is just contrary to what he fights for.

I imagine that he would agree with me if I had said a violent criminal who reformed his ways and got his life back on the rails, no matter how small an impact that made, would be more deserving of praise than himself. He is a priest, a holy man expected to be kind and bring light to the lives of those in suffering. He chose that path of his own volition. But being immersed in a dark life and fighting your way back to the light? That is far more difficult.

Point is, you can't judge one man as being more worthy than others. Some people may be more important because of their knowledge and expertise but their importance is to society, not to humanity. People are of equal worth, some just do not realise their worth to the same degree as others and some realise their worth in different ways.

Is a man who donates massive amounts of money anonymously to charity less worthy than the man who does it publicly? Is the man who gives a pound to the homeless worth less than the man who gives a hundred?

Whilst I appreciate the positive publicity this gives him and awakens the world to both his existence and his message of equality, I dislike placing him or any other on a pedestal because to him, giving is easy, to others it is much harder. People are different volumes of the same worth, wether they realise that worth or not, it is in them to grasp.

I can't and won't stop you from praising his goodness in your own way, but be aware of the things I said. Peace, bro.

well the person of the year doesnt mean much when you remember hitler and stalin were both on it, its mostly youre doing a good job dont mess up, but then yea hitler and stalin messed up

But Hitler was person of the year for turning around Germany's economic downturn...
User avatar #349 to #268 - prettyflyforaderp (12/19/2013) [-]
well if thats all, then wouldnt a man nice enough as to help the homeless, create equality, and bring others together be in such a form as to deserve as title as person of the decade? but hitler turned to a darker way, and time said they were embarrassed about stalin to say the least
User avatar #371 to #349 - brobathehutt (12/19/2013) [-]
I know Hitler turned evil, but he saved millions of lives before later taking millions more. Time made the right choice in choosing Hitler, it was Hitler who then made the wrong choice in murdering millions of innocents. Even WW2 was partially justified.
