I've been a teacher for 2 years now. I can already tell you parents are the worst part of my job. There are some parents I just want to grab by the shoulders and shake like a maraca.

And I'm not talking about the nitpicky parents who call and complain because I gave their child a consequence for throwing scissors. I'm talking about the parents addicted to drugs and their kids are born addicted, or mother who sold her daughter to a pimp at 6 years old, or the parents who leave their 7 year old home alone to babysit their infant brother so they can go out and drink, or the parents who took their 8 year old daughter back to Somalia to "visit family" when they really took her to get FGM done since it's illegal here. These kids have seen some **** .

I'm going to school to get a degree in education, and every now and then I wonder if it's even worth it with all the headaches that teachers have to endure nowadays, would you say that it's still worth it to continue?
User avatar #126 to #70 - delphine (01/23/2014) [-]
it is 100% worth it. Some days weeks are really stressful but then I look at the pile of cards on my desk they've drawn for me for no reason at all, or a kid tries to crawl in my lap during story time, or that one student who struggled with addition and worked so hard finally aces his assessment and you get to see how excited he is and celebrate with him... Definitely a very rewarding and fulfilling life.

Also, I work in a really tough inner city district, I would recommend staying away from those schools at least until you've had a few years experience. Hindsight's a bitch. There are going to be problems in any place you teach (because people who shouldn't have children are usually the ones who have the most) but low-income areas are more challenging to manage.

Right now I am planning on being a High School/ Middle school teacher. I plan on getting certified for both. But I did cadet teach for Kindergarten for a semester, and I usually spent the time in the hall helping a couple students with their math skills. I still hear about the teachers say how much I helped them just spending a few minutes with them. But the path I'm on, it seems like my age group might be a little less thankful.

wow... sold to a pimp at the age of six... what the ******* hell...? And why did they wanna ruin their daughters lady parts?
User avatar #163 to #98 - delphine (01/23/2014) [-]
the first one was a white american family. i always hesitate to use the label "trailer trash" but that's what the mom was. She was a junkie and needed more money to support her habit. dad wasn't around.

Your second question: it's a cultural practice in a lot of countries in Africa, Middle East and some Asian countries. They don't want their little girls to be able to pleasure themselves or think about sex (cause, you know, all girls think about all day is sex sex sex) because it's their duty to serve their husband. It also ensures there will be no doubt she is virginal, so they'll be able to marry her off. Most men in those cultures won't take a bride who hasn't undergone the procedure they consider it "unclean".
User avatar #165 to #163 - hoponthefeelstrain ONLINE (01/23/2014) [-]
Jesus that just makes my lady parts hurt. Was the little girl who was sold at least rescued before she was abused?

I had no idea what FGM was. Googled it. WHY?
User avatar #36 to #30 - delphine (01/23/2014) [-]
it's a common practice in many third world countries. many men won't marry a woman if she hasn't been cut because it ensures that there can be no dispute as to whether she is a virgin or not. Many mothers will do it to their own daughters even knowing the pain because they're afraid that if they don't, they won't be able to marry her off. I have a lot of tolerance for cultural differences but I have no hesitation in labeling FGM as totally barbaric.
User avatar #37 to #36 - theavatarspupil (01/23/2014) [-]
That sounds exactly the same as a circumcision.
User avatar #43 to #37 - delphine (01/23/2014) [-]
No, it is not the same as male circumcision. They are both mutilation and I disagree with both practices. But the difference is: After a male has been circumcised, it's only the foreskin. It's not necessary but the only problem is that he loses a little bit of sensation but can still have a healthy and functional sex life. When a female has it done, they will often cut out everything (called Infibulation). As a woman she will be totally unable to feel any pleasure during intercourse at all. Often, they will actually sew the opening shut except for a tiny hole for urinating so losing her virginity is excruciating. In most of these places, it's done by untrained people, without anesthetics, in unsanitary conditions. The healing process takes over a month and walking will always cause some pain due to scar tissues.

But it should comfort you to know that the mother is in jail and has lost custody of her. She has been adopted by her wonderful and loving foster family and the difference in her from the beginning of the year is night and day. She's made friends and smiles more. The day she was adopted her new mom took her on a shopping spree and bought her new clothes. She was so proud to come to school and show them off, it was adorable.

I had teacher who would literally make fun of me if I got angry. This was 1st grade mind you. She would pretty much get the WHOLE CLASS to laugh at me. So one day I took a chair and I hit with it in the stomach she was pregnant.

I had the police called because I read a book and it contained the sentence I want to kill everyone. I had to read it allowed (it was mandatory reading). I had to spend 2 days in Protective Custody.

Then they wonder by 4th grade I said I want to blow up a school and kill people.

My favorite was when I was in 4th grade and my parents got called in because I was playing "Guns" at recess. They told my parents how I was acting inappropriately and that guns aren't a good thing and my dad got up, looked my bitchy teacher in the eye, and said "Guns don't kill people, its people who are told that guns kill people who prove the fact that they don't, I'm about to prove that fact if you don't shut the hell up about kids acting like they have guns" My teacher called the cops and the officer who responded was my dad's personal friend so when he walked up my dad grabbed the gun from his holster, took the clip out and handed it to me. The teacher flipped her pancakes and yelled at the cop to arrest my dad, then she took the gun from my hand and my mom snapped a picture of the teacher holding the gun at me. That teacher didn't bother me for the rest of the year.

Next time he got in trouble he went to call them and they took his phone away and started going through it. When my parents got there my dad was pissed. I came along too because I was with them when they got called. My dad politely asked for the phone. The vice principal refused. My dad got up, locked the door. Walked behind the desk. Opened the drawer, took out the phone and sat back down. The VP grabbed at my brother's phone while my mom took a picture. (She never took a picture, she later admitted) and threatened to send it to the school board and get her fired. They then took my brother out of that high school and told the school board about the incident. Last I head the VP was fired.

Hitting someone in the stomach with a chair; even if they weren't pregnant (ESPECIALLY when they're pregnant, seriously dude) is just not cool and neither is admitting you wanted to blow up a school full of other kids.
User avatar #85 to #80 - IloveWAFFLES (01/23/2014) [-]
I was in 1st grade I didn't find out she was pregnant til later. Do you expect a first grader to understand that?

Also blowing up the school happened in 4th grade again I didn't understand what that meant or even the ramifications.
User avatar #88 to #85 - thirdjess (01/23/2014) [-]
I knew both of those things by both of those times. That doesn't excuse violent intent though. "I just wanted to hurt them really badly not incinerate and crush them" "Well that's ok, then." I see a lot of people who think being able to just hulk out and get angry instantly is funny/entertaining/cool but it's not, and I don't understand why anyone would think that.
User avatar #90 to #88 - IloveWAFFLES (01/23/2014) [-]
Just because you knew those things at the time doesn't me I did.
I don't find it cool that I can do that and I've gotten better since I been switched to an Alt school.
But another thing. I was making progress flipping out less and less each passing day.

The school decides to send me out of the school (which had an area where kids who got pissed could be away from everyone else) to one that didn't which had a principle who hated me just because my dad stood up to him constantly.

But you don't understand what I went through.
Only two people ever supported me.
My Parents.
My brother beat me constantly and he is 4 years older.
He would hit me with bats smash my face in concrete anything he could do he did.

Then I go to school since im not like my brother in school the school decides to treat me like **** ? like thats gonna solve anything? Right now I feel like you are trying to say "Its ok for the school to do that" and I was only one who was treated like that.

Oh god 'you don't know what I've been through' how do you know. Based on the fact that I have a low tolerance for ******** ? I MUST live a PERFECT life. Yeaaaa right. If I have learnt anything, it's everything is your fault. Everything in my life is my fault, everything in your life is your fault. Guess who else got beaten ******** by their brother (and still to this day)? Any guesses? That's right, this girl. Guess who doesn't allow that to become an excuse for my failures and miseries? Oh, right again! It's this girl!

I want to be a full time graphic designer, but I'm not. I do a little freelance, but my job is data entry. I could easily blame my anxiety, or my brother for causing it, or people in India who do my job for ten dollars less per hour. But I'm not, because I'm not an idiot. This has gotten so far off topic it's ridiculous.

Ok explain how a teacher making fun of me is my fault.
EXPLAIN TO ME HOW ITS MY FAULT MY BROTHER BEAT
EXPLAIN TO ME HOW ITS MY FAULT FOR THE SCHOOL ENCOURAGING KIDS TO BULLY ME AND BEAT THE **** OUT OF ME.
User avatar #100 to #96 - thirdjess (01/23/2014) [-]
Your teacher bullying you is your fault because you made yourself an easy target. Your teacher bullying you is your fault for being an angry child in the first place. They picked on you, because you stood up and got angry and threw tantrums in what I'd imagine would be very little. Like again, I'll reference my brother, he once broke a window cause he couldn't figure out a math problem.

Your brother beating you is your fault because you didn't kick his ass back. And neither do I, I'm terrified that if I swing back I'll get beaten worse but that is my fault. I'm a pussy bitch and I'll get whatever comes to me.

But I'll tell you what, since I've started giving him attitude when he tells me to turn my computer off because his xbox is slow, or threatens me with someone so I do his chores, when I give him all the sass and hostility he deserves, he backs off. If I make him THINK that I'll swing back, I'm not an easy target, so he doesn't.

And I'll bet you good money you're sitting there, upset, thinking 'this bitch, this bitch is picking on me, and it's all her fault because she's a straight up cunt' but no. You reel that **** in, you take control of it. It's not my fault for being honest, it's your fault for letting it get to you.

So your saying a 1st grader can't act out? and she chose me because I did? yet its my fault? ok

My brother is 4 years older than me thats a huge difference when your 6 or 7. and even know its big difference.

No I don't think your picking one me.
You are being honest but at the same time its more like a "Its your fault because you acted like a kid"
User avatar #107 to #101 - thirdjess (01/23/2014) [-]
I'm saying a first grader can't jump and scream and kick things in a school environment. Sure, start crying cause your Dad didn't buy you that tonka truck you wanted. Go for it. Don't swing around chairs because you can't understand something. Don't say all first graders do it, cause you know damn well they don't.
User avatar #109 to #107 - IloveWAFFLES (01/23/2014) [-]
Im gonna be the better person and stop the conversation right now.
You don't understand the situation.

My tantrums were never violent unless It was very serious.
I mostly yelled or screamed very rarely would I hurt someone but if I did I truly felt wronged.

I can't say I under stand completely but I do get where you are coming from.

Can I talk about when I was younger without seeming like I am trying to one up you?
User avatar #116 to #114 - IloveWAFFLES (01/23/2014) [-]
sure I mean you are not really one upping me your just stating what happened to you and your responses to those events.

That's fine, I made my point. Now all I have to do is hope you remember it.

Just like everyone else in the world I was downright TORMENTED through school, but I never wanted to hurt anyone because of it.

Yeah there are those teachers like that. I had a 2nd grade teacher who would get in my face and yell at me for drawing on the sides of my homework and notes. MFW she is now my colleague (we teach in the same district now) and I made a point to doodle all over my itinerary during our last in-service.

My teacher at the beginning of the semester told us to get rid of old content because it we wouldn't need it for the final (He was going to give a study packet) then at the end he told us we were doing a binder check and you had to have every paper from the semester. In short, don't impose an organizational system on your students
