Ren was shot somewhere in the lower torso by an enraged Wookiee from great distance. Surely, a grievous wound, but it's the kind that would take a while to kill a person, especially if the bowcaster shot cauterized the wound. (I'm aware that Bowcasters fire actual metal projectiles, but they're also energized and therefore, likely hot enough to cause similar heat damage to a blaster bolt). Considering the angle, the shot may have even missed vital organs, or just grazed them. The energy behind the shot would certainly still cause plenty of damage, however.

The Loyal Trooper, on the other hand, was shot by the very same Wookiee when he was much less emotional and therefore much more focused on proper aim, and the projectile impacted somewhere on his middle to upper back / chest. Much more likely to cause severe damage to the heart, lungs, or spine.

There wasn't just "some soot on his armor", he was shot clean through the upper chest by a metal rod charged with plasma.

Never mind the fact that Force-users are known to have healing abilities, right? Certainly not enough to completely repair the damage but presumably somebody as strong in the Force as Kylo Ren would be able to keep himself in one piece long enough to get aid.

Then it's just a plot element, man, what do you want from me? Important characters have almost always survived damage that would otherwise kill or incapacitate them. You yourself mentioned that Anakin Skywalker was cooked in his own ******* blood and he still survived. Maybe it's sheer power of will aided by the use of the Force, or maybe it's just deus ex machina. I don't know what else to say.

Sith have been known to keep themselves functioning on sheer hatred and anger. It worked for Darth Maul when he was sliced in half so he could return during the Clone Wars animated series, an it worked for "Sleeps with Vibroblades" Darth Sion, who literally fell apart at the seams when Meetra Surik convinced him to let go of his pain and anger.

I'll agree with you that TR-8R could be brought back, but only I think because of this internet hype. Normally, a stormtrooper shot is a stormtrooper dead. However, movie logic dictates that a person is not dead until you see their eyes close and their head roll to the side. Even a certain important person falling off of a cliff could theoretically be brought back in the next movie, because we never saw the actual death. "He fell into water at the bottom and someone found him and stuck him in a bacta tank!" But script-writing ex machina aside, TR-8R is definitely dead.

I've got a giant boner for bog-standard infantry. He could have been the bog-standard infantry jedi, or at least just a hero.
