This is why I never understood why women's football isn't more popular than men's football. I'd much rather watch a bunch of girls run around jiggling and getting all sweaty, rather than a bunch of blokes circle jerking themselves because they can hoof a leather ball into a huge net for millions.

It's because the quality of mens football are immensely higher than women's. Womens football are greatly influenced by mistakes by players rather than feats. You say this because it seems, at least, like you're not interested in the game at all, but just the players. When I watch football I don't watch it to look at beautiful people, I watch it because I'm genuinely interested in the sport - and also men have in general a better physical platform to perform better in all sports than women.

Fun fact tho; Womens football were banned for a huge portion of the 1900s, before it was banned it was in fact more popular than mens football. Maybe the quality used to be a lot higher.
User avatar #36 to #25 - mankey (02/21/2014) [-]
Well I'll be honest with you, I don't care for the sport. And yes, it's the players that tend to ruin it, the over paid, self aggrandising, borderline rapist, wastes of genetic material that they are.

Most of them couldn't care less about the game any more and just want more money, hence why they'll take dives, take bribes, commit crimes, take drugs etc. Because they don't care about the game, their team or themselves.

You know when football was actually interesting? Back when the players barely got paid enough to cover the wages they lost taking the day off for the game. When they had a full time job to support themselves and played to enjoy it. When they had a ******* passion for the game and it showed in the way they played it. They played for their local team and the team was sponsored by the local businesses. It was a proper community thing.
#39 to #36 - gerfox (02/21/2014) [-]
Woah, calm down there.

The fact that the sport has been professionalized is good, it has improved the quality of the game greatly. Today you know the players you're watching are world class, but in the time you're referring to you couldn't be sure. For instance, Liverpool picked up Steve Highway from the 3. tier in England aged 23 (or something) - and he was essential in the years to come.

I agree that I wished for football to be more about the roots of the club, and I love seeing local lads playing for their clubs. They always tend to give that extra, and you can see it means a lot to them. The "heartless" players you refer to are few. Bribes are also rare at the professional level, and it's exactly the wages that work against this. Why would a player who's already well off economically take a bribe to play bad, when he's already earning good money playing good? Drugs are there in every major sport in the world.
User avatar #40 to #39 - mankey (02/21/2014) [-]
The thing is, the athletes who compete in the Olympics are also world class, but don't get paid stupid amounts or get up to nearly as much crap as football players do. But it's not just football players either, rugby players are starting to get in on this stuff too.

They get paid that good money whether they play good or bad, so a 15 million bribe to take a dive or miss a penalty adds to this. Especially when they've entered into a contract that means they get their full pay even if they miss an entire season from injury or are just sat on the bench.

I don't think it's all the fault of the personalities of the players though. I just think they are corrupted by getting too much money at too young an age. Most of the top players become multi-millionaires when they're still in their early 20's. That must completely warp their minds.

I really think the amount they get paid is ridiculous, especially when you look at what doctors, nurses, teachers, police, firemen and soldiers etc get paid in comparison to a bunch of guys, and lets face it, who are playing a game.
#44 to #40 - gerfox (02/21/2014) [-]
It's all about popularity. Let's take a step away from the players for a moment.

When you get into the game, and you like it - you would probably like to buy some merchandise. This employs people, and people make profits - and the clubs make profit. The more popular the club, the more jerseys they sell (for instance), and the more the club earns. This sale of merchandise draws the private sector forth, who pay even more to get commercial space.

All in all, you get immense competition - and a lot of money that ends up with the clubs, who has to spend this to keep their clubs competitive, recruiting the best players etc. this is natural due to the capitalist nature of the world economy.

And if they hadn't done this, someone would've - or all of the wealth would've ended up with a small group of owners who became filthy rich.

I don't think bribes are a factor at all. It's too noticeable, and these guys won't risk getting sued, lose all they have and more just for a couple bucks extra when they're already more than well off.
User avatar #54 to #44 - mankey (02/21/2014) [-]
That's all well and good, but then it should be the clubs making the millions and not the players. Just because Nike makes billions, doesn't mean the people on the production lines get paid the same.

But then again, the club doesn't *make* the merchandise it sells. That is made by outside contractors, the club only owns the brand name, they only get a percentage at most. Where they get most of their money is from television deals and ticket sales, because that is where they are selling their product directly to the consumer.

Is it too much to ask that the clubs, instead of not knowing what to do with their millions and spending them on players, artificially inflating the prices. Why couldn't they invest the money back into the community that supports them? I know some do, but it seems to be very minor, considering the amount they make. If a premier league club like say Manchester United, really began investing into their city, everyone would be better off and the fans would appreciate the club much more. I know I wouldn't have as much to complain about them, because they'd be doing good work and helping people.

Going back to the players and my original point for a moment though. Removing the obvious sexist things I pointed out for humour, why *isn't* women's football as high a quality as men's football? It can't be because men are just naturally more skilled at the game than women. Biologically the only thing that men could possibly do better is a power shot across the field, which could easily be compensated for by more skilled short game play. Where does the division come from?
#60 to #54 - gerfox (02/21/2014) [-]
I agree that they should invest more back into their community, but the problem is again that unless all do it, the ones who do it will lose a competitive edge. And in the end, the clubs are in it to stay successful.

Men are more skilled at the sport among other things because boys are generally more interested in it than girls, probably also due to the fact that mens soccer is bigger - but nevertheless, it's the fact. This leads to more seriousness in training, and more training in it - also a lower probability of quitting it when things are tough.

But I think more importantly are the physical factors. Women are, and this is a fact, weaker, slower, and less powerful than men in terms of physique in general. This means that the intensity of mens football is higher, and the durability of the players are longer.

Short game play takes practice, meaning you have to neglect other areas of "becoming a complete footballer". When you practice short game play, ball control or any other aspect you do not train other decisive factors - and when women are already a step behind physically already, it's really hard for them to attain a high enough level to compete with the level of boys.

In the end football is like any other sport, the quality of the sport by men are usually higher than that of women - so if the womens football would want to gain popularity they would have to focus on what makes it different. Play on their own terms, if you know what I mean. I'm Norwegian, and we got a case of that here in Norway - not in football, but in handball - where womens handball are much more popular even though mens handball is more intense, and more physical, they have been able to emphasize ball control, passing and tempo in their own way. The way they play it at times, it seems as a different sport - which they have benefited from.
User avatar #84 to #60 - mankey (02/21/2014) [-]
Which is why local lads should be playing for local teams. No more buying players from Brazil to play in an English league, or having someone like David Beckham playing for LA Galaxy just because they could afford him. 98% of English fans didn't even know LA Galaxy existed until they bought him, but David Beckham was world famous. It's like Rio Ferdinand being bought to play for a Sheikh's five a side hobby team.

So, do they take it more seriously because it's more popular? Or is it more popular because they take it more seriously?

I think you're overestimating the physical factors of men and underestimating those of women. The physical benefits men have over women extend almost solely to two things, height and physical strength. But a woman are more flexible and agile. These are moot factors anyway because it's not mixed games, it's men v men and women v women. Also there is no difference in the stamina and endurance levels men and women can train to, especially if it's a limited time like a 90 minute match, a female footballer can keep up leg for leg with a male footballer.

You can call it "becoming a complete footballer" but there's also the saying "Jack of all trades, master of none." If they separated their players training, so the Strikers were great at speed and precise shooting, the mid fielders at ball control, feinting and passing, and the defenders at tackles, taking the ball and power volleys. Then they can position their more skilled players in strategic places. It would be more intelligence based, that you could see at work.

I agree with you that the sport should be strategised differently. Like I said, if the female players can't power shoot up the field they should work more on ball control and precision. Which I think would make for a much more interesting to watch personally, because the ball would be constantly on the move and there would be much more skill on display.
#94 to #84 - gerfox (02/21/2014) [-]
I think it's a circle, it's more serious because it's popular - and it's more popular because it's serious. The competition between probably came first, and as time progressed the popularity came.

I think you are underestimating the physical aspect, even though I might be over stressing it. If you look at other sports, like in the olympics, men do have the world record in all exercises (except discos throwing, because the discos which is used by females are lighter).

Ultimately, the way the game is played today, its all about covering the most ground with the most players to a pretty big extent. Teams with players who outrun the opponents will have effectively more players in both attack and defence, and even though you think endurance levels are the same for female and male athletes, they are not. This is where I think that women should specialize.

They should focus more on strategic, technique and pass oriented football.

And yes, you are correct - women and men do not play professionally alongside one another, but one of the reasons I find womens football less appealing is because their physical condition often is poorer, resulting in more space, sloppier pressure - and sloppier defensive work.
User avatar #98 to #94 - mankey (02/21/2014) [-]
Which is why they need to put more money into female sports in order to increase the popularity and start that successful spiral.

The problem with using the Olympics as an example though, is most of the events were designed by men to show off the prowess and height of male athletic ability. But when it comes to some more modern events such as curling, gymnastics, archery etc, which use more skill and precision over strength, the gap between male and female competitors is more more even. (also I think you mean discus)

That's the thing, it's the way the *male* game is played. Trying to compete head to head using the same strategy that plays to a male players strengths is not going to work, the female leagues should focus more on the female players strengths.

Their physical condition will be poorer because they aren't able to take the game seriously, like you said, their isn't enough popularity for them to make it a career option. They're in the condition football was in the 40's and 50's where it wasn't their main job, so you can't compare them to today's male players but to those players. If you watch some of the footage of players back then, you'll see the same physical condition of the players, and the downsides you pointed out. That's where I said, the passion comes in. They're not doing it for money or fame, but for the love of the game, which I think is better than the souless Premier League clubs.
#117 to #98 - gerfox (02/21/2014) [-]
I would just add that the Premier League clubs do have some soul left, at least their not franchises who relocate - like in the US.
