Nimrod was the guy who built the tower of babel in the bible, and because he was a fool to think he could overthrow god, the term Nimrod was coined as someone who was an idiot. know your basic bible trivia broski

Although the Bible does cite Nimrod as once being ruler of Babel (Genesis 10:8-10), it never mentions him in the story of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). To say he was overseeing of the construction of Babel is an extra-biblical interpretation, and should be viewed with a grain of salt. However, on two occasions he is described as a mighty hunter: heavily in Genesis 10:9 and again in 1 Chronicles 1:10. I feel his reputation of being a mighty hunter has far more biblical weight than him being overseer of the construction of the Tower of Babel.

i am Iraqi. i was born in Baghdad (90 km northeast Babylon). NImord, in my culture, refers to tyranny, rebellion and greed.
since it is not our times anymore, and having been known as the barbaric folks of today's world, it doesn't surprise me much that Nimrod refers to idiocy and stupidity.

That picture it actually from ancient Persia! And if you directly translate Nimrod from Persian(the language) it translates to half river. The name is by the way pronounced niim rod.

Some extra knowledge for fun!

Nimrod, one of Noah's grandsons, was a rebel of self-proclaimed valor. .... he shall be compared to a foolish man who built his house on the sand

In Dante's Inferno, one of the titans was Nimrod and he was made to speak gibberish by god as his punishment after the fall of Babylon. I always assumed that's where the secondary definition came from.
