So I watched Spirited Away as my first Studio Ghibli film a couple days ago, and I had to say I was a little underwhelmed by the story and the message. The visuals were fantastic and it was just a wild ride from start to finish. I was just sort of confused about what the message was and I would have appreciated a better closure than just "hey let's head back." Did I miss something big? I'm just not used to Ghibli films so I might just have.
User avatar #43 to #6 - ayumu (06/20/2015) [-]
There is no message
It's just a story

Why does everyone think there has to be some profound moral hidden away in every tale? Is it hard to just enjoy a story for a story?
User avatar #64 to #43 - glabellanutella (06/20/2015) [-]
Again, Spirited Away was my FIRST Miyazaki film and everyone I've talked to praised the movie highly (it's also rated 8.6 on RottenTomatoes). I wasn't trying to sound like some Studio Ghibli hater and some movie snob... I went in with some expectations considering I look mostly for the depth of story and message in good movies, especially childrens' movies.

Why does everyone think anyone who has a conflicting opinion against a popular work doesn't deserve a serious answer? Is it that hard to interpret my question as a genuine question?

I read books, I watch shows, I even sometimes read the mangas but man if it doesn't have a point then WHAT IS THE POINT!?

My entertainment doesn't come from cheap thrills it needs intrigue and mystery and then an ANSWER to that mystery, it needs a meaning because if it doesn't have one then it seems to be a terrible mistake.

Few reasons:

> The kind of people who understand (and 'like') Akira are probably not the kind of people who'd be extremely vocal about their media preferences. Akira is an extremely deep movie, and that sort of depth is kind-of a buzzkill / show-stopper if brought up in a casual conversation about peoples' movie preferences.

> Otomo, possibly by luck, created a movie where the art style / quality, story, music, voice-acting, and countless subtleties all combined into piece of art that not only has a lot of power, but somehow is able to connect with many people such that it's able to convey that power into their brains. A lot of people don't like to stay in a space where they're thinking about the heavy stuff brought up by that movie.

Honestly not a neckbeard, but Akira is extremely important to me:

I watched it the first time when I was just three years old, late at night, on Laserdisk, at a family friend's house, who was a huge, middle-aged 'original' American Otaku.

I was completely transfixed... that movie blew my ******* mind to smithereens, and honestly, I feel like it changed something deep down in my brain.

My first time i didnt pay any particular attention and the depth was lost on me. never really been able to convince myself to watch it again

My first time watching it was a few months ago in a cinema - I'm so glad my first time was at the cinema, it was great. Plus it was part of a movie night at the cinema where they were showing films from 11pm-6am and Akira was on at 6am. Was ******* tired as **** , man, but was worth it.

This one is one of my favorites: "Ookami kodomo ame to yuki"
And no, it's not some furry cringy **** .
It's about a woman who has two kids with a werewolf and her struggles to keep them safe from society.
Raising Yuki and Ame alone is difficult; they constantly switch between their human and wolf forms, and Hana has to hide them from the world. When she is visited by social workers concerned that the children have not had vaccinations, Hana moves the family to the countryside away from prying neighbors. She works hard to repair the dilapidated house and sustain the family on their own crops.

Western critics interpreted it as a movie about how horrible war is for everyone, not just the combatants. The director just intended it to be about respecting your elders. Not really anything more.

Garden of Words has a pretty ****** plot but it's a beautifully animated film. Gorgeous settings and relaxing amience.

In relation to From Up On Poppyhill, I 100% believe Goro Miyazaki is bad at creating movies. I would not recommend From Up On Poppyhill to anyone. There's a reason you won't ever see anyone recommend Tales From Earthsea ...

I would instead recommend ANY of Satoshi Kon's movies, he's one of my favourite directors. His best movie IMO being Tokyo Godfathers. Also try Paranoia Agent, of course... It's a series, but of ideas he wanted to make movies out of but couldn't flesh them out into individual feature films. He instead chose to make them all a part of an over-arching plot, each connected in some way.
#75 to #19 - anon (06/20/2015) [-]
From Up On Poppy Hill was not a typical Studio Ghibli movie. It is for sure NOT the best, however, it had a decent enough plot that doesn't confuse the viewers with deep symbolisms and even deeper Japanese folk lore. The movie, in my honest opinion, has one of the best sound tracks I have even listened to. It was heart warming and it brought you the era that was being portrayed.

Tl;Dr: From up on Poppy hill = not bad 7.5/10. Decent plot. Awesome soundtrack
#143 to #75 - ByeliVolk (06/20/2015) [-]
Would have rather Miyazaki make Porco Rosso 2. From Up On Poppy Hill is not a terrible movie agreed but Goro has a lot of room in those shoes to fill to even have a chance of keeping up with his father. It is really sad that Yoshifumi Kondō died in 1998 because he was the successor that Miyazaki wanted instead of his son.

Princess Mononoke has a hilariously stupidly simple plot that gets way to unnecessarily complicated than it needs to

>CUT DOWN THE WHOLE FOREST! ALL OF IT! DON'T QUESTION ME JUST GIVE ME MORE MONEY!
>Eboshi pls stop
>NO U

Later on in the movie

>Eboshi I am ******* serious you're getting ******* annoying pls stop
>NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO u

And what did we learn at the end of the movie?

That Nausicaa Of The Valley Of The Wind is the better movie.
#83 to #69 - swagbot (06/20/2015) [-]
Just watched it again, for the first time since i was a little tyke.

Now that i have some years under my belt, I understand it more.

Yes, it is a super-simple plot, but the plot didn't have to be an especially complex one in order to contain some extremely important lessons.

******** quickly sees that there's a lot of good people in this society (Toki, Lady Eboshi, The Iron-Town folk) who are trying to be good, but are confused by the sickness of exploitation and anger that has a strong hold on the 'Mainland' society.

Here were my two big takeaways from the movie, which I think are fairly profound:

1. Despite the forest being destroyed, ******** really did win in the end. By running everywhere and managing everything, he managed to avert an even worse crisis without killing people... and in so doing, he stopped the 'Cycle of Hatred' in his part of the world.... which was the cause of all the problems in the first place.

2. Nature will always be strong enough to outlast human folly. 'The Forest' (allegory for the Environment-At-Large) will always recover... if we plunder it, we will only be robbing ourselves of its beauty in the short term.
#84 to #83 - murrlogic ONLINE (06/20/2015) [-]
Long story short

There will be other people like Eboshi and they will continue to destroy the forest

I can imagine how simplier her job would have been with modern technology

>These bulldozers do 8 times the work and these chainsaws practically micromanage all the manpower axes users need. i'll wipe this whole place out in no time

She's a ******* captain planet villain.
