i. M. O. Mcgonagall is listed on one
of the Quidditch trope/ s in the

whether it was Minerva Mcgonagall

would explain her Quidditch
enthusiasm.

The medal in the case says 1971 so McGonagol couldn't have been the one to play in quidditch with harry's father if she was in the same year as voldemort back in the 40's.
User avatar #64 to #10 - vigorion (01/22/2014) [-]
It might be a trophy for coaching or something like that. But, yeah, since we don't know much about her relatives it could be anyone....
#108 to #64 - danascully (01/22/2014) [-]
I'm afraid you are mistaken. Here is an entire list of McGonagalls family (that we know about)
Minerva (maternal great-grandmother)[3]
William McGonagall (possible ancestor)
Robert McGonagall Sr. (father)
Isobel McGonagall (née Ross) (mother)
Elphinstone Urquart (husband) †
Malcolm McGonagall (brother)
Robert McGonagall Jr. (brother)
Nieces and nephews

I believe that it could easily be one of her nieces or nephews as they quite certainly went to Hogwarts.
User avatar #112 to #108 - vigorion (01/22/2014) [-]
Ah, thank you! Yes, I suppose the nieces and nephews are the top contenders then.
#113 to #112 - danascully (01/22/2014) [-]
You are very welcome. McGonagall actually has a quite big, interesting backstory if you read into it.

in the prisoner of azkaban, (book,) professor trelawny was fearful upon noticing that twelve people were dining in the hall, believing that were she to sit down, the first of the thirteen seated to rise would be the first to die. dumbledore got up and greeted her, and convinced her to sit down, however, there were already thirteen people sitting there: scabbers should have been included, since he was really a human.

so extremely observant people would have realised dumbledore was going to die, even before the half blood prince came out.

The "1000 students attend Hogwarts each year" fact really bugs me. It tells me that there could likely be 15-20 students in Harry's year and house that didn't even get a name. That would be a rather small group of people that Harry shared classes, meals, and living space that he never talked to or even noticed. I'm pretty sure living with the same group of 20-30 people for 6 years, I'd at least be on first name basis with them.
#9 to #8 - apackofwolves (01/21/2014) [-]
This also bugs me about their class sizes, since they took their classes with 2 houses in each class, such as Gryffindors and Slytherins taking Potions together. When I thought there were about 10 students per year in each house, that seemed reasonable since that would mean 20 students per class. But with about 35 students per year per house, that's 70 students in a Potions class. Quite a bit more than I would expect from even a magical version of high school.
User avatar #17 to #9 - EnergizierAnon ONLINE (01/22/2014) [-]
well, you should also add the fact that since 1000 students attend, divided by 4 houses. each house had roughly 250 students.
User avatar #20 to #17 - halor (01/22/2014) [-]
think he already did 250/7 is roughly 35 students per class level
#28 to #20 - apackofwolves (01/22/2014) [-]
yeah, I figured it would be about 35 per class year with 1000 students, but we only know ten Gryffindor in Harry's year, so I figured there were only about 40-50 new students each year. Small class size, but I just figured wizards weren't a very large proportion of the population.
#19 to #8 - anon (01/22/2014) [-]
That might mean new students
#98 to #8 - anon (01/22/2014) [-]
The fact that they were not mentioned does not imply that he did not speak to them.

I spent most of my high school years with the same 3-4 people. Still, I obviously knew everyone else in my class. If someone were to write a book about my teenage years though, only those 3-4 people would actually be mentioned explicitly.
User avatar #2 - atrumaliger (01/21/2014) [-]
A crush? I thought they were lovers.
#18 to #2 - kombee (01/22/2014) [-]
Nah, or atleast there's no mention of them JKR has said in an interview that Dumbledore got a bit of a liking to him at one point because of his brilliance. Dumbledore is in many ways a flawless magician and the only one living up to his standards was Grindelwald because of his equal brilliance. But it based on the hints from the books, it didn't seem like Dumbledore ever got to express his feelings towards him (he was most likely in the friends zone). That's why it hurt him so much when Grindelwald turned to the dark arts. Dumbledore wasn't necassarily gay, but you could say he was gay for Grindelwald.
User avatar #23 to #18 - atrumaliger (01/22/2014) [-]
"Dumbledore wasn't necassarily gay, but you could say he was gay for Grindelwald."

Ah, sorry man, but that's where you lost me. Dumbly was gay. That's an open and shut case.
User avatar #24 to #23 - kombee (01/22/2014) [-]
Well, based on what JKR has said, it seems Dumbledore hasn't been interested in any other people besides Grindelwald. What I was trying to say when I said Dumbledore "wasn't necassarily gay" is, he liked Grindelwald because of his brilliant nature and personality that lead him to be the fantastic (albeit evil) magician he became. Wether Grindelwald was a man or woman wouldn't necassarily have made a difference. Therefore the "Dumbledore was gay for Grindelwald".
